Growing Trees In My Balcony Garden

in Amazing Nature3 years ago

Since the lockdowns kicked in, we have been working on being more self-sufficient. Thirty years in the capital, I had succumbed to city life and loved almost every aspect of it. The parties, eating out, traffic(especially when I'm alone it's my time with thoughts and music).

The lockdowns introduced another way of life. Staying at home, cooking and just "being" without constantly chasing something or other and I welcomed the change with open arms.

This is when we started our Balcony Garden - for real this time. We had once before attempted a hydroponic garden which failed miserably. We had also tried to grow some herbs- actually, we are still working on that. Now though, we have levelled up. We have trees in our Balcony Garden.

Let me show you what we have.

The Curry Leave Tree. These leaves are used abundantly in Indian curries mostly but also in other dishes for flavour. They also have many health benefits including fighting Breast Cancer, Anaemia, Alziemers, Hair Loss. It is relatively easy to grow, and I've had this tree for more than 10 years now.

The Banana Tree. A couple of months back, it was given to my Dad by his brother. Dad didn't care for it, so we gladly adopted this little fellow. Apparently, it will grow to about 3 feet or so and then start fruiting. It is right now about 2 feet tall. Every 5 days or so, a new leaf pops up and says hello to the world. We are very excited for when it fruits. I just hope growing in a pot won't stunt it.

The Chiku Tree. Ever since we started using homemade fertilizers made by a friend(another homemade business started during the pandemic), it has been fruiting like crazy. The only trick is to get to them before the birds do. So when they come to a decent size, we wrap them and wait for them to ripen. It has some health benefits but it's the taste for me.

Trees in pots, how about that, huh? Now, if I ever move out of this apartment, I would go for landed property so we can have a real garden with nice big trees.

Thank you for reading
Till next time, Carpe Diem!

My mama @buckaroo says that you grow all these trees without a homestead! That is really amazing @kaerpediem. I hope you don't have baboons to steal your fruit like we do. I wonder what Chiku fruit taste like? It is very pretty. But I've never seen it before.

I live in the city and a highrise
We are making the best of it with what we have ;D
We have bo baboons just birds, but I'll take the birds
Baboons sound scary and not as easy to chase away
Chiku is sweet and yummy haha

Really nice, Sheela! I'm so looking forward to that banana to bear fruits. 3ft tall banana plant with fruits... That's gonna be amazing for sure.
It's been years since I had chico. There used to be a chico tree at grandma's. I wonder if it's still there.

Me toooooo
I really hope it fruits
It would be the cutest thing ever haha

Your way of spelling chiku is so much cuter haha

Oh your plants look amazing! My daughter is getting into gardening. I think it is great fun!

Oh thank you so much :D
It is fun - never thought it until I was stuck at home haha

Oh I have a cure plant coming! Hopefully it will okay over winter in greenhouse. I think lockdown made gardeners of so many people!

#gardenjournal

Wasn't sure what a cure plant was... I googled... I mean I "Presearched" it to find out - I am so green when it comes to gardening (yes, pun intended ;p)

I kinda had a distaste for gardening - too lazy I suppose
Now, that I have discovered it... loving the experience
