The red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris)

Enjoying the sunshine

With the advent of autumn, squirrels molt. Light summer fur is replaced by warm winter fur.
I met this beauty in the middle of May, and surprisingly, by this time she had not shed her fur yet.
This squirrel is not what we are used to seeing in parks. This is a real wild forest squirrel, not accustomed to people.

Seeing me, she jumped up a tree to protect herself. I had some peanuts for the birds with me, I poured them under the tree for her, so that when she got down she would treat herself to them.

Did not think squirrels would molt their fur for winter/summer, interesting to learn something about the wild little squirrels up North.

So cute face the squirrel got, especially when enjoying the sun. 🙂
