         Since this cuatro has already been commissioned by a friend, I needed to speed up the process. Fortunately, I had a chance to go to the workshop and get some important steps out of the way. I also realized that these posts tend to be too many, and I wanted to make a new format for them. I will post the progress of the instrument in chunks. Just see how much I have advanced before this year started.

Este cuatro ya tiene un dueño potencial. Esto implica que hay que acelerar el proceso de construcción. Afortunadamente, tuve la oportunidad de pasar por el taller y adelantar algunos detalles importantes. También llegué a la conclusión de que suelo hacer muchos posts con pocos avances. De ahora en en adelante, publicaré el progreso de los instrumentos en posts más grandes. Por ahora, miren el avance del instrumento antes que de comenzara este año.

         One important step after getting the headstock pieces glued is to make sure there's an even surface to attach any ornamental pieces of wood. This could be done with a sander, but a plane works just fine.

Es necesario eliminar cualquier superficie irregular una vez que la pala se ha pegado. De manera que cualquier chapa de madera para adornar el clavijero esté asentada en terreno plano. Esto puede hacerse con una lijadora, pero un cepillo también cumple con esta función.

         On the opposite side of the neck, go the pieces that form the heel. This is one of the two heels a guitar-like instrument has. The other one is internal. The upper part of this one will be displayed on the back side of the neck. On top of the pieces, you can see the lines that guide the orientation of them.

En el extremo opuesto a la pala, podemos ver las piezas del tacón. Este es uno de los dos tacones que tienen los instrumentos con forma de guitarra. El otro es interno. Una pequeña porción de este quedará visible en el reverso del mástil. Encima de las piezas que lo componen, se puede observar la línea guía para pegarlos.

         This is a new tool for me. Basically, it is shaped to hold the bars of the harmonic fan. For what reason? To make all sides even. Every piece has to be on 4mm on each face.

Esta es la primera vez que veo esta herramienta. Se utiliza para labrar las barras del abanico armónico. ¿Para qué? Darle la misma medida a todas las caras de estas varas. Cada una debe medir 4mm.

         To prevent the top from bending to the tension of the strings, you just need to place a reinforcement for the bridge in the internal side of it.

Para evitar que la tapa se doble ante la tensión de las cuerdas, se debe colocar un refuerzo para el puente en la cara interna de la misma.

         In my previous entry, I glued these reinforcements on the back of the cuatro. Since I don't have a plane of this size, I took the chance to use my teacher's in order to shape these bars.

En la entrada anterior, pegué los refuerzos del fondo del cuatro. No obstante, al no contar con un cepillo de este tamaño, no pude darme a la tarea de labrarlas. Aproveché esta oportunidad para hacerlo.

         If you remember my first cuatro, this is the most delicate part of the construction process. A bad fretboard means a poor instrument. Any problems in the measures and the tones won't be in tune-no matter what you do. So, I had to work on this while I was at the workshop.

Si recuerdan los posts sobre el primer cuatro, sabrán que esta es la pieza más delicada del proceso de construcción. Un diapasón con medidas erróneas implica un instrumento desafinado. Había que aprovechar la oportunidad para completar esta pieza mientras estaba en el taller.

         If you have had a guitar or a similar instrument in your hands, you might have noticed that the neck isn't a rectangle. It gets thinner on its sides the closer you are to the nut. You need to use the same measures of the fretboard since both pieces are glued together. After drawing your guide lines, you can use a plane to shape it. Then, sandpaper will give it an even finish

Si has tenido una guitarra u otro instrumento similar en tus manos, te debes haber dado cuenta de que el mástil no es un retácngulo. Se hace más estrello cuando te acercas a la cejuela. Para hacer esto necesitas las mismas medidas del diapasón. Estas piezas van juntas, después de todo. Después de trazar una líneas de guía, se puede rebajar con un cepillo. Luego, con una lija se le puede dar un toque final.

         This was a bonus thrown in by my teacher. I already had the blade and was looking for a way of making my own circle cutter. It was amazing to watch him make this. He literally took like some minutes to put it together. Those are some amazing skills!

Esto es una herramienta hecha por mi profesor. Le había llevado la hojila y ya tenía unas ideas para hacer mi propio compás de corte. Fue increíble ver cómo en cuestión de minutos armó esto. ¡Esas son habilidades para construir!
