Bozzlife: A year of chaos - rebuilding

Covid-19 aside, the past year as been full of challenges for my wife and I. In October of 2019 we woke up to 3 to 4 inches of water in our finished basement. In Spring of 2020 another large rainstorm created a sink hole in our front yard and we had to get a large portion of our driveway dug up.

Later that Spring another storm brought down a branch on our deck that you can see in the photo above. Things have been crazy and I for one am ready for it all to slow down.

My friends helped me remove the tree branch and my father in law helped get the deck rails replaced so things which helped bring some normalcy back to our lives.

Getting the new concrete poured for the driveway was going to be quite expensive. Since we had to get a loan to pay for it anyway, I figured we might as well replace our fence too. You can see in the picture above how it is kind of leaning and is quite weathered.

Don't mind Jovi giving me "the look". Instead you should focus on the other side of the fence in the background. This side was in better condition than the other, but we didn't want to replace one side and not the other.

We decided to hire this job out and we knew that we wanted to go with white vinyl panels for a couple of reasons:

  1. We wanted something that would match the deck rails.
  2. We wanted something that would allow for easy maintenance and would last a long time.

I made some call and we eventually found a fence guy that could do the job for us at a reasonable price. One problem...

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, there was a shortage on the vinyl panels we wanted due to factories being shut down and import/export issues.

We waited a good two months before they finally got the materials in and they could start working on our fence.

Apparently, one of the works on the crew suffered a concussion in the process of bringing down the old fence. The original builder had used a obscene amount of concrete around the posts and while trying to pry one out with a long metal pry bar, the bar snapped back and hit the worker in the head. He had to go to the hospital, but ended up being okay (aside from the mild concussion).

Once they got working it took them less than three days to get the whole thing installed. I was pretty impressed.

Jovi on the other hand seemed altogether indifferent.

Two things I didn't anticipate... The vinyl panels really make it clear how uneven your yard is. With pickets you can make them all even at the top and it is more pleasing to the eye. The vinyl panels really show the rise and run of the fence line.

Second, until the grass grows back in around the post holes, every time it rains, the mud splashes up on the side of the fence and it isn't very aesthetically pleasing.

Overall we are fairly happy with how it turned out. I like that they installed the anti-sag cable on the gate that you see above. There is still a pile of concrete in our front yard almost a month later that they haven't come to pick up yet.

Because of that I am not sure I could recommend this fence company again. As I said, the overall job was good, but little things like that just kind of eat away at you and leave a bad taste in your mouth.

We used some of the insurance money we got from the tree branch falling on our deck and replaced our propane fire pit that got damaged. I added some locking casters to the bottom of it so we can roll it around on the deck wherever we want.

Now we just need to find a good deal on a new canopy for the deck and it will be back to our private oasis that we spend the weekends on relaxing.

You have such a nice yard and cute little pup! (well not little lol)

Thank you!

Despite your setbacks, you have a nice huge yard there! I'm jealous! lol

It's really not that huge for the US. It's .25 acres.my buddy owns about forty.

Thats awesome, we have such strict planning laws here that land is pretty scarce in Western Europe.

Wow, you've had your share of rebuilds. It's good you got the chance to restore some items.

Thanks for sharing.

Yes, and I am so glad I was able to do some of it myself.

Amazing beautiful rebuild and repair jobs. Mother Nature can sure wreak some havoc in our lives.

The fence looks great! Not sure how far away from Flint you are, but they have an auction that sells Home Depot Overstock for cheap. When I saw your fire pit it reminded me of it because there is one there for bidding. It's called Liquidbidding and does Home Depot and Amazon stuff. Tons of home improvement stuff for really cheap.

Interesting! We are about 45 minutes from Flint. It's not a bad shot down 75.

The fence look great! 2020 has been a crazy year the tree on the deck and sink hole sound rough. Hopefully things pick up for all of us!

Me too!

That fence looks REALLY good. I know how crappy it is to have a contractor not finish up. Just irritates the crap out of me too.

You'll get everything done and have several years to coast. I hope!

I hope so as well!

you sure have had a bad run, the new fence looks good, a pity the company messed up the little things, a new fence is one of the projects on our todo list, not sure when we will get around to it

I really like your fire pit, we have small round firte pit for wood which I find a pain I may have to look at a propane one

The propane ones are really nice these days. The prices have really come down on them too.

I did some googling and did see some quite reasonably priced, I think we will get one soon once the work in the yard we having done is completed and then we will have a new spot for it

Awesome! You will have to write a post about it when you do!

I will try to remember that, but I have been slack I haven't even done a post about our new house yet lOL

Thank you for posting via our community. This post will be passed to other curation projects for more rewards.
