Ten lined June beetle (Polyphylla decemlineata)

We actually found this lil guy on the beach, hims was covered in sand and sort of wet, so I rescued hims.

When I picked hims up, he started squealing and hissing, so I was certain it was a faery. Look at hims face! Those "feathery" antenna make him a male of the species. Evidently, they fan out to sense other females. They can "smell" their pheromones. I wasn't his type.

So he turned around, began walking away ...

Then he decided that he was going to find someone that was more suitable for his endeavors to repopulate the Pacific Northwest. They seem to like it out here, but mostly they come out at night, near light. It's been a full moon, so here's him, giving me a full moon! Bye Fred! (Have you noticed we name them all "Fred"?)

They tend to be relatively benign, in other words, they won't destroy everything in sight. Their larvae mostly eat grass roots, when they climb out of the ground they will eat a bit of shrubbery, but not too much. This guy was about 2" or 5.8cm. They don't get much bigger, so hims was healthy!

As usual, these pictures are my own! Thanks for looking and reading about Fred, The June Bug ... in July.

Pretty successful rescue mission, all in all... the beach was not the right place for him. He probably flew across the water from Diamond Point and was happy not to drown...

Beautiful species, very interesting publication..... What spectacular antennae!.... It's always great to learn about species from other places. Thank you very much for sharing!
