Volví a mirar a mis perseguidores. Estaban perplejos.

“Get the compass and the girl, dead or alive”. The sound of violent whining of horses woke me up abruptly. I looked through my tent and my heart skipped a bit. I knew a group of bounty hunters when I saw one. All dressed in a black shemagh. They had knives and blades attached to the sides of their harem pants. “What do the bounty hunters want from me? Me! Least of all, the compass”.

Quickly, I grabbed what little belongings that mattered to me including the compass in a bag and tore through the back of the tent. Akiya was sleeping so peacefully beneath the dark sky. As chill as it was in the desert night, her body felt warm and tender. Gently I rubbed on her until her eyes came to life. “Easy girl. Easy”.

I loved her perceptiveness. It always felt like deep down, she had a soul and without words, we had a deeper connection than I had ever shared with any human. She knew it was time to go. Quietly yet hastily, she let me mount her.

The sound of Akiya’s hooves sprint into the night began to give us away. “She is getting away. Over here. They came after us with all they had. I looked back and I could see the terror in their eyes as they lashed their horses’ behind. A shiver ran down my spine. I didn't know where I was headed in the vast desert but I trusted Akiya to take me. “C'mon girl, c’mon”. I leaned in on her back and whispered.

Screens of dust engulfed the air. The six men moved like shadows and their horses were dauntless. My eyes began to sting as I cleared strands of hair from my face. “What would anyone ever want from me and why the compass”?

It was something my father bequeathed to me on his death bed. He was an explorer. A great one of his time. He had come to the Dtargnan desert years ago in search of an oasis. A mysterious oasis that only the compass led to. The compass was one of its kind. Magical, he said. However, it never led my father anywhere because it never worked. “Maybe I'm not deserving of the oasis. The compass will only lead a desperate helpless heart to its oasis. You know, I'm not desperate and helpless because I have you”. He would rub my forehead affectionately and smile.

Soon I concluded the story of the oasis a myth and the compass, nothing extraordinary. But it was the only thing that kept me close to my father. After his death, I couldn't get myself to leave the desert.

I looked back again and they were closing in on me. They were going to catch up any minute. I pulled the saddle harder but there was only so much Akiya could do. I was being unfair to her. I clutched my fathers compass to my chest. I missed him dearly. He would have saved us somehow. I closed my eyes and a tear dropped. It landed on the compass and the pointer began to flicker.

Immediately, I felt a cold breeze sweep through my body. My eyes opened and like trance, I was ushered into this space. It was like I transitioned into another world. I found myself in the middle of the most breathtaking scene. It was an oasis. The oasis. There was a well of water blue like the sky and calm with soft serenading puddles. The tallest palms I had ever seen surrounded the well. Birds chirped, the wind sang and the air smelt fresh and crisp. I felt peace and within the blink of an eye, my fear vanished.

“Where is the girl, where did she go?” I looked back at my pursuers. They were perplexed. The horses came to a screeching halt. I could see them but clearly, I had disappeared before their very eyes.

Slowly I climbed off Akiya. I looked at my father's compass. “You are extraordinary and I was desperate and helpless”. I rested my head gently on Akiya’s forelock. “C’mon girl. We are safe now”. I whispered as I led her down to the well.

A beautiful escape gifted by a loving father... sometimes miracles show up only in the darkest hours! Wonderfully written, thank you for sharing @kei2 :)

Thank you for reading. I'm glad you enjoyed it.

A fascinating story, with a happy ending that reveals part of the mystery of the compass. Undoubtedly, this tale could be continued and become a true saga of mystery, magic and fantasy. Best regards.

Oh wow. I never thought beyond the ending. Now that you mentioned it, it will be awesome.

Thank you so much for reading.

Reading from @dreemport

Thank you, dear. Glad you loved it.

You are welcome 🤗🤗

I must say that I was at a spot reading carefully to not miss a word... you have your way of writing stories...may I ask how you got this Inspiration of writing fiction stories...are you a writer or perhaps a reader in dreame or stary because you sound like one.
Thanks for sharing this in dreemport!

Awwn. Thank you so much. I think I can call myself a writer now. I've always penned my ideas but I refrained from calling myself a writer. I read but I'm not crazy about it. My inspiration is everything around me.

Most times, I have the ending scene and then I have to cook up a back story that doesn't give away the ending. Like I see the scenes in my head, so I want to pour exactly what I see in ink. I want my reader to feel what I see.

I'm still working on myself and learning. Hopefully, I'll get there. Thanks again. You've made my morning brighter

Cool 😎
I learnt something today.
Glad it made you smiled.

Eek... I loved this!!! The relationship between the protagonist and her horse, Akiya, is beautiful, and so lovingly presented. You write from the heart, Kei; such gorgeous prose, and a wonderfully creative story. It was simply magical that her father's compass transported her into an unseen realm or dimension - it worked all along, it just needed the right person to present in need 💗!LUV !ALIVE !LADY
