Vice rarely insinuated itself in opposition to honesty; it almost always takes the disguise of the latter.

E N G L I S H

I DID NOT KILL HIM

Our mind tries to process the inexplicable things that happen to us: sudden torments, entelechy shadows that glide at will and imperceptible entities, hidden in the mist watching their victims pass away. I am one of those unwary damned, chosen by one of those malevolent minds. We never knew where it came from, and its stalking ended up taking away the person I loved the most.

I had a sentimental relationship of five years with Fausto, we were both men in our thirties, with stable jobs and with a lot of desire to progress and establish ourselves. My profession is a surgeon and my partner's is a plastic artist. I had landed a good job at the general hospital in North Tristania, while Fausto was slowly beginning to be recognized for his abstract and shocking art. We moved into a nice house located in a hilly and proliferated residential complex, I have always loved nature and this seemed like a good place to settle down.

Our cats were happy around so much quietness and well-kept vegetation; we had two little felines named Sergio and Agustina. Sergio was much younger, only six months old, while Agustina was already an adult cat of five years. Everything went normally without any strange mishaps for the first few weeks. I was coming and going from work while Fausto stayed at home developing new galleries, until the fear; provoked by an invisible and strange presence, began to slowly corrode him.

First it started with our cats, usually Sergio, being a very young cat is very restless, except when he sleeps, but during that week when everything started to happen, he began to exhibit a nervous and a little aggressive attitude, then Agustina began to do the same, they ate little and remained inert with their backs bristling looking at the walls, and when it seemed that the evil had left, they recovered their normality screaming for food.

On several occasions, Faust did not fail to emphasize the strange attitude of the cats, and how nervous they sometimes became, especially when they stared at the door of his studio. Each anecdote was more frightening than the last, the cats snorting and meowing sharply as if they felt constantly threatened. We decided to take them to the vet one day, and when we took them out of the house, they returned to their normal state.

The vet did not see anything strange in them, after doing several tests, he concluded that they were just a couple of healthy and normal cats, we began to worry about them and to think that, if our unknowns were true, the house could be threatened by something that goes unnoticed to our eyes. Fausto was worried about the health of the felines, and deep down I was too, but I explained to him that we could not let this overwhelm us and seek a solution as soon as possible. My answer did not reassure him, but at least I was able to put his mind at rest.

After our conversation, Faust became a whole way of ideas. He replaced his gallery with other paintings of his own making that were even more bizarre and explicit. The images he created were full of humanoid insects, with faces stretched to the ground and elongated black limbs. It seemed strange to me that he was now creating this kind of art, but he confessed to me that these ideas came to him through dreams.

He always painted these figures on abstract and somber landscapes, surrounded by a deep orange and red sky; as if he was portraying an apocalyptic event. I had never drawn things like that before, and that's when I started to worry. Then the headaches started, and I had to take him to the hospital one night because he had woken up suddenly in a rage. The neurologist detected a great brain activity difficult to explain; an extrahuman phenomenon, which could cause a stroke to anyone, but Fausto looked normal, as if what he was suffering from only attacked him sporadically.

I took him home to rest without taking my eyes off him, with the promise of new tests if things got worse, but I did not imagine it would happen so soon. That night, a very loud noise woke us up. The cats were meowing desperately as if something dangerous was stalking them. I went to them and found them in the living room scared and nervous. I stroked their necks and backs until they could calm down a little, then I went back to bed with Fausto, however, I never imagined what was waiting for me: a dismembered and pale body was before me, devoid of blood and organs. Frightened, I called the police with difficulty in articulating words. As they came, I took my cats and waited for the officers on the porch. Suddenly, a noticeable and huge figure was slithering across the ceiling like a crawling creature, I panicked and took three steps backwards until I slipped. When I looked back, the strange dark silhouette had disappeared.

I don't know how long it took, but the police had arrived. They searched the house and found Fausto's body on our bed. They questioned me on the spot, but my answers seemed not to be enough. They arrested me as the only suspect because no incriminating fingerprints were found on anyone else, only mine. They processed me, interrogated me to exhaustion, but I only explained my truth. I completely denied being the perpetrator of the person I loved. No one believed me and I thought things would get worse.

During my confinement awaiting trial, I kept thinking about what happened to Faust. I should have heeded the warnings. We should have left that damned place, and what worries me most at this moment is that this evil could come for me at any moment.
