No More Hardcore Mode for Splinterlands

In the recent TownHall, @yabapmatt mentioned that Hardcore Mode will now be called Survival Mode. Survival Mode is set to be another format along Modern and Wild Format. It will allow the use of all cards including their extra BCX's. Cards that 'die' in battles wont be usable in all formats until a certain cooldown ended. High level cards will have shorter cooldowns than the low level ones. Summoners will die too when their team lose the battle. There will be no energy requirement. Cards will serve as the consumable energy for this format.

Splinterlands team will initially fund the SPS rewards pool for this format. There are plans in the long run to propose to the SPS DAO to fund this in the future. Initially, there will be no entry fees like that of the Wild Pass and Bots will be allowed to play. The team, however, is open for changes and adjustments in case some exploits will occur.

This format is designed for players with large amount of collection as it encourages the use of the extra BCX of the cards. As Matt stated this is not designed for new players but for advanced players. This is not part of the New Player Experience. This is made to cater old players with large amounts of cards.

Issues Arising The New Format

No-To-BotFarms.png

One concern players and Content Creators thought about is the issue of Bot Farms returning to the game. To be specific, this mode might encourage Bot Farms from abusing the format with their massive reward cards collections (Credits to @aftersound, @tales-f-t-crypto and @lorkus in the AfterSound channel). Matt, on the other hand, hoped that Bot Farms will consolidate their cards in one account and play it in this format. Another issue is this might hurt the Scholarship programs as it might inspire sponsors to consolidate their cards into one account and play it all in Survival Mode.

Solutions And Suggestions

One solution for this new format also came from a comment in AfterSound channel. Quantumchaostheory suggested to make Survival Mode the only format where bots are allowed and make the Ranked formats - Modern and Wild for human players only. This entails requiring a 'Survival Pass' for Survival Mode and removing the Wild Pass from Wild format.

A strong sentiment of requiring a 'Survival Pass' echoes around the community. This will entice a wide range of players to participate in Survival Mode. Bot Farms will unlikely participate by consolidating their cards into one account.

Closing

Survival Mode is undoubtedly one of the exciting additions to the game. In my opinion, it is still early to speculate what will happen to this mode. We will need to test out and make some adjustments once the mode is released to the public. As a programmer myself, it is true that we can QA every new releases of the game. But there are still some factors affecting the new product when it is released. I am hopeful that this mode will bring old players back to the game.
