Hace más de veinticinco mil años, cuando Richard se subió a un bugui de arena, para, con un grupo de amigos, ir a uno de los lagos de metano de Titán, con intención de ver a quienes se lanzaban con alas de Ícaro desde los riscos y correr un poco por las duna, nunca llegó a suponer lo que el destino le había deparado, mucho menos pensar que, veinticinco mil años después, seguiría vivo y llegaría a conocer a los descendientes de aquellas naves colonizadoras que fueron lanzadas desde la estación espacial Pegaso, en la órbita de la Tierra, mucho antes de su propio nacimiento.

A Richard le costaría asimilar su nueva condición, aún cuando OLIMPIA siempre se mantuvo a su lado apoyando su recuperación, al igual que había sucedido durante los últimos treinta y ocho años, había sido su guardiana a bordo de la Elpis, y seguiría cuidando su sueño, cuando ya cansado, con unos setenta años biológicos, decidió que lo único que le quedaba, era entrar en la antigua cápsula de estasis y aguardar lo mejor, mientras OLIMPIA permanecería despierta junto a SÓCRATES, hasta que varios cientos de años después ella también caería victima del agotamiento de sus baterías, y la IA, se pusiera en modo de suspensión, para ahorrar la energía que aun generaba el reactor.

OLIMPIA, SÓCRATES y él, habían formado una extraña familia, una androide, una inteligencia artificial y un humano, que había librado por poco la muerte, viviendo juntos en una gigantesca y solitaria nave espacial a poco más de cuatro años luz del sistema solar; si hubiese sido la trama de una comedia de televisión, tal vez habría sido un éxito.

Ahora gracias a más de veinticinco mil años de evolución tecnológica y médica, y en parte gracias a tecnología adquirida de una civilización alienígena, la antes extraña familia, en un futuro sería menos heterogénea de lo que había sido.

La red neuronal de OLIMPIA, había sido transferida a una nueva matriz, con casi un doscientos porciento más capacidad de lo que tenía la anterior, lo que la hacía aun más capaz intelectual y emocionalmente de lo que SÓCRATES alguna vez había podido ser y para contener tal capacidad de cómputo, fue provista de un nuevo cuerpo, con una apariencia casi humana y ajustado a los nuevos estándares humanos, algo a lo que tampoco Richard se había acostumbrado aun.

Por su parte, SÓCRATES, la afable IA de la Elpis, quien nunca pudo superar el trauma de haber perdido a toda la población de la nave, a la que tan afectuosamente había atendido durante cuatrocientos años. Ahora, al igual que OLIMPIA, había recibido una actualización masiva, convirtiéndolo casi en un oráculo, con acceso al conocimiento creado por la humanidad durante todo el tiempo que ellos estuvieron ausentes, además de darle una apariencia por la cual aún parecía sentirse cohibido.

Mientras que él, Richard, había tenido el mayor de los cambios, veinticinco mil años de estasis, apenas habian logrado salvarlo de la muerte, la mayor parte de sus órganos internos resultaron dañados o más bien agotados; su cuerpo había envejecido más allá de lo que era recuperable por la tecnología. Los médicos de la Ícaro, recurrieron a un enlace cuántico con Palas, un planeta donde existía una de las más importantes academias de los ahora munchos mundos humanos y los especialistas decidieron que lo mejor para él era un procedimiento experimental que habían obtenido del intercambio con los inus.

Su red neural biológica, como la poseída por cualquier organismo vivo, fue replicada en una matriz neural cuántica, como la de OLIMPIA, y esta matriz fue implantada en un cuerpo cibernético, similar al de su compañera de tantos años, ahora él y OLIMPIA eran más parecidos que nunca y junto a SÓCRATES formaban una familia en todo sentido y su último destino sería el de convivir en la Elpis, que sería transportada a la orbita de la Tierra, que para su sorpresa era nuevamente habitable y serviría de estación espacial en la que habitaría los viajeros que visitaran el planeta, que permanecería como un santuario donde no podrían haber habitantes permanentes que lo dañaran.

Serían los guardianes permanentes de la puerta de entrada al mundo originario de la humanidad, convertido en la nueva joya de los mundos bajo su domino. Los últimos sobrevivientes de los humanos originarios, los únicos, que conocieron la vida en las antiguas colonias del sistema solar y la caída de la civilización humana en su antiguo hogar, formando la más antigua de las familias.

Return to Elpis

Richard would find it difficult to assimilate his new condition, even though OLYMPIA always stood by his side supporting his recovery, just as she had for the last thirty-eight years, had been his guardian on board the Elpis, and would continue to watch over his sleep, when already tired, at about seventy biological years, She decided that the only thing left to do was to go into the old stasis capsule and wait for the best, while OLYMPIA would stay awake with SOCRATES, until several hundred years later she too would fall victim to the exhaustion of her batteries, and the AI, would go into suspension mode, to save the energy still generated by the reactor.

OLYMPIA, SOCRATES and he had formed a strange family, an android, an artificial intelligence and a human, who had narrowly escaped death, living together in a gigantic and lonely spaceship a little more than four light years from the solar system; if it had been the plot of a television comedy, it might have been a success.

Now, thanks to more than twenty-five thousand years of technological and medical evolution, and in part to technology acquired from an alien civilization, the formerly strange family would in the future be less heterogeneous than it had been.

The neural network of OLYMPIA had been transferred to a new matrix with nearly two hundred percent more capacity than the previous one had, making it even more intellectually and emotionally capable of what SOCRATES had once been able to be and to contain such computing power, it was provided with a new body, more human than it had ever been and adjusted to the new standards of human appearance, something even Richard had not yet become accustomed to.

For his part, SOCRATES, the affable AI of the Elpis, who could never overcome the trauma of losing the entire population of the ship, which he had so lovingly attended to for four hundred years. Now, like OLYMPIA, he had received a massive upgrade, making him almost an oracle, with access to the knowledge created by humanity during all the time they were absent, as well as giving him an appearance for which he still seemed to feel self-conscious.

While he had undergone the greatest of changes, twenty-five thousand years of stasis, which had almost killed him, most of his internal organs had been damaged or rather exhausted; his body had aged beyond what was recoverable by technology. The doctors of the Icarus, resorted to a quantum link with Palas, a planet where one of the most important academies of the now muncho human worlds existed and the specialists decided that the best thing for him was an experimental procedure that they had obtained from the exchange with the Inus.

His biological neural network, like that possessed by any living organism, was replicated in a quantum neural matrix, like that of OLYMPIA, and this matrix was implanted in a cybernetic body similar to that of his companion of so many years, now he and OLYMPIA were more similar than ever and together with SOCRATES they formed a family in every sense and their ultimate destiny would be to live together in the Elpis, that it would be transported to the orbit of the Earth, which to its surprise was again habitable and would serve as a space station for travelers visiting the planet, which would remain a sanctuary where no permanent inhabitants could harm it.

They would be the permanent guardians of what would be the entrance door to the original world of humanity, converted into the new jewel of the worlds under their domination. The last survivors of the original humans, the only ones, who knew life in the ancient colonies of the solar system and the fall of human civilization in their former home. The oldest of the families.
