Locations of Users Active in Last Month

in Hive Statistics2 years ago

Inspired by @steevc I decided to make some charts showing where our active users are based, using their own self-declared locations in their profiles. This will not be perfect as users can easily have incorrect information on their profiles, intentionally or just being out of date.

First, here is the chart when we include ALL users actively voting or posting in the last month. As you can see, the vast majority are unknown or uncategorized locations even after manual clean up of the data, alongside the top 20 countries. The point of this chart is to show that the users who share their country in their profile are a small minority overall.

The chart is more readable when we remove those unknowns.

An observation worth noting going through the data manually is that there are cities in Venezuela and Nigeria which individually have more Hive users than most countries, at least if self reporting locations is just as common in any region (it likely is not). This is most true for Caracas and Lagos, both of which are probably the main epicentres of Hive user activity in the world.

Nice work. I did not get around to generating a chart in my script. The Hive metadata is so messy that we can only estimate actual numbers in each country. My #BritList is the result of lots of manual work checking people. I get suggestions from various people of who to add as I would miss them otherwise due to lack of location data. We cannot force people to provide that.

We have plenty of growth potential across the world. I would hope the numbers will improve.

It would be interesting to do a breakdown of account sizes in different countries. I would guess that most in Venezuela are minnow or smaller, but money may well go further than in Europe.

If you have more ideas of what data we could process I will help out where I can.

Yeah, with a bit more work it should easily be possible to determine the distribution of stake across the world. I think we will not be surprised to find the vast majority in the US and Europe, though the largest accounts don't actually disclose their locations.

I am still curious as to why El Salvador likes Peakd so much (20% of visitors), but we do not seem to have many users there.

It's because that data comes from Alexa.com which used to use a sampling method with a browser extension. Sampling tends to have more error for smaller countries. The truth is we never had a significant El Salvador userbase.

Alexa.com has stopped operating since then and the data you see is out of date.

It did seem strange for such a small country. Losing that Alexa data is a shame as it did at least give some idea of how popular various sites were. I don't know what alternatives we have.

Seems definetely there are more Nigerians on the hive blockchain over the last months

There was a time when Nigerian community seemed to have disappeared but it has come back strong.

Yea. It seems every day passed, Nigerian keep getting strong here

Another observation is that while they don't seem to be the majority of users, all 3 countries in North America feature in the top 20.

Wow that is pretty cool information thank you very much for sharing this and I definitely learned something.

I'm really glad I bought into the Spanish speaking community coin!!!!

And Philippines? Wow absolutely congratulations on that one I wasn't even expecting that.
