WallStreetBets on HIVE

in WallStreetBets3 years ago

Unless you're living under a rock you've seen the story that's rocking the financial world right now where the wallstreetbets subreddit got one over on the big boys.

They are not happy about it...

Discord in surely a totally unrelated situation has now banned them from their platform. Apparently for TOS violations or something along those lines, but the timing seems a bit convenient.

Anyhoo, I thought this could potentially be a good opportunity to showcase what HIVE is great at. So on the chance that members of the wallstreetbets community see this, I want to quickly lay out some of the value propositions of at the very least backing up your community on Hive. Frontends on Hive may not have all the features that a community of this scale wants or needs, but it has a few extremely important ones that could potentially be the life or death of a community.

So let's just make something plain. If you build a community with millions of users, you've created something EXTREMELY valuable and powerful, as was just demonstrated by what's happening with WSBs. In the old days, your only option was to build these things on centralized sites like Reddit, or what we around these parts call Web 2.0.

At the end of the day, you don't own that community. You don't own the content, the followers, you don't even own your account. At any point in time all that value, all that work, all that time and energy can just be snatched away from you by the true owner of that platform.

For the same reason an investor would want to diversify into Bitcoin, to get exposure to an asset that can't be manipulated, can't be seized, to have something that they truly OWN, this is the reason you should also think about migrating to Hive.

When you create an account on Hive, you OWN that account. No one can take it from you, you can't be banned from Hive.

When you create a Community on Hive, you OWN that community. Your followers, the posts within, are immutable. They will exist there on the blockchain as long as Hive exists.

Now of course none of this would function without moderation, so as a community owner you DO have the power to decide what you want seen or not within YOUR community, but it works via muting which means someone can still make posts or comments in your community, but they won't be seen on any interface by default. If someone really wants to see those muted posts they are still on the blockchain, but effectively, that content will be hidden.

Now something that you may want that Hive doesn't have is privacy. Hive is totally open and public. For private posts or groups, you'd have to use something else.

Other than that, Hive is a great place to create a community that no one can take away from you.

*Update

Wow! Mid me writing this post, WSBs has been banned from Reddit. It looks like the troops are already in motion to get them over to Hive.

For the record, I'd totally hand over the keys to this community if the people wanted to migrate. I just made it to grease the wheels a bit since handing them a community would be easier than walking them through creating one.

Hope we see such big communities realize the value of decentralization sooner and discover and onboard on hive.

"handing them a community would be easier than walking them through creating one."

That is the dang truth!! 🤣

I've become addicted to Reddit again because of this, I keep checking the front page xD Cheering them on and I hope they win in the end even though everything is so rigged :S

Hey @midlet great work on setting up WSB on Hive.io can i ask how do you set up a community like WSB on Hive?
