Hello,

I can say that I see the ancient city of Patara as the most important city of our historical culture, which impresses me the most among the historical cities I have visited and reflects the remains of our history in such a clear and understandable way. The fact that the artifacts have survived to this day shows how valuable this region is.

You can go to the ancient city of Patara from the Fethiye Kalkan road in Antalya's Kaş district. You can easily come here with the minibuses departing from Kaş and Kalkan. You can reach the ancient city by going through the village of Gelemis, by turning left from the sign that says Patara, by leaving the town of Kaş with your own car, and entering the road to Fethiye. This journey takes about four hours from Antalya. Patara Ancient City is open to visitors between 08:00 in the morning and 20:00 in the evening. You pay 200 TL as entrance fee. So it's around $10. Museum Card holders pay 60 TL. There is no charge for our disabled and martyr relatives. Patara Ruins Visitor Welcoming Center entrance is extremely modern and luxurious.

Patara Ancient City has four important parts. These; It is the ancient theatre, the parliament building, the port, the street and the city gate. Let's talk about the city gate first. Let's take a look at how the door looks first. Below you can see how well and skillfully the city gate was built.

There are three windows on the upper part of the door, which consists of three arches. Placing the marble-like stones neatly on top of each other has added a distinct beauty to the work. Some parts of the stones on the top of the door were used in relief forms.

After entering the city gate, a long path paved with boards was built on the flat earth and grassy area. There are some ruins and stones symbolizing the ancient city on the right and left of this road. We reach the ancient theater on foot from this road.

The theater, which has a magnificent appearance with its semi-circular structure, consists of 20 stone stairs. Due to ongoing repairs, they have banned entry to some areas. A separate sitting area has been created in front of the theater. I think that people who can be considered important in the city most likely watch the scene from here. Right next to the theater, it was excavated by making labyrinthed rectangular sections from old stones. They are strictly forbidden to enter these areas. Excavations are still continuing here.

One of the most important works of Patara Ancient City is the parliament building. Limestone was used in most of the walls of this parliament building, which is not available in other cities. The height of the assembly, which also has stone stairs facing each other in the form of a semicircle, is around 20 meters. The middle of the building is covered with solid glass pieces. There are remains of Patara under the coatings.

The image below reflects the exterior view of the Parliament Building. Even the robust and modern image of the building, shot from two different angles, mirrors the art of the period.

The Parliament Building has been designed to appeal to a very large audience in terms of capacity. In order to reach the seats in the upper parts of the building, there are also hidden entrance sections, unlike the main entrances. Even the long wooden doors of these entrances indicate that this is a special sheltered area. In the middle of this beautiful building, there is a small orchestra made of marble. They placed the stage building in front of this orchestra.

They placed informational remains of stone with old writings on the front of the Parliament Building. These works, which are accepted as the important Assembly Building of the Lycian League, were restored by the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (GNAT) and presented to the visitors.

One of the most beautiful areas of the Ancient City is the harbor street. At the entrance of the harbor street, there is a large model ship, resembling a large sailing ship, with a shelter made of yellow ivy on its deck. Harbor Street has a long, wide road about 200 meters long. There is a small pond at the end of the road. Some parts of the port have collapsed. The road has been turned into a columned street. Thick stone pillars lined up on the sides of the road reminiscent of the Roman Period and reliefs were made on the ends of some of these pillars. Although most of the pillars are damaged, the ones with solid reliefs in between are dazzling.

I would like to open a separate parenthesis for the walls of the Patara Ancient City. They have prepared a separate information room in the city about how these walls were built, their types and their strength. In this room, the information obtained from the excavations was shared visually and in writing, knowing the features and heights of the western, southern and northern walls. Especially the south wall, the south side East Roman (Byzantine) wall, which clearly shows that the building was used as a bastion in the 4th phase, and the north and west city walls were handled separately during the repair phase. In the completed excavations, 31 percent of the facade was documented to be standing, and it was determined that the Eastern Roman walls were in place up to the vaulted room border, the parados entrance door jambs were partially preserved, but the vaulted room facade wall and its top cover collapsed and the entrance door of the stairway was closed with a cut stone wall. has been done.

Finally, Patara Beach, one of the longest beaches in the world, is located near the Ancient City of Patara. This beach seems to be split in two by the Xanthos Stream, which is also nearby. The fine grains of sand of the beach stretch from the beach to the ancient city.

Merhabalar,
