dLine: The Hive Fediverse Portal

in HiveDevs3 years ago (edited)

We've set up a portal (server) for Hive users to join and engage with other fediverse instances.

https://dline.xyz

We're extending a hand to the recent Instagram, Facebook and Twitter exodus

What's fediverse?

The fediverse is content on a decentralized communication protocol (named ActivityPub) in which any server can communicate with any other server through a federation. When a server federates with another server via user interactions, users are able to see a joint timeline and share ideas and messages. There are numerous frontends/apps available. Two of these that resemble Twitter are currently found on dLine; Pleroma and Mastodon.

Do I get rewarded for posting?

No. The value is your freedom of communication. You do not earn any tokens for posting on dLine at this time and it is highly unlikely you ever will. We don't believe in short-sighted extrinsic rewards which become expected (such as receiving tokens for every possible interaction) because they lower intrinsic rewards in the long-term.

However, you are strongly encouraged to use dLine to share links to your posts and to grow your readership. Treat it as you would a traditional social media platform.

How is this for Hive?

Fediverse instances are typically (but not always) organized around a specific theme or locality. To participate, you can join any instance that shares your interests, ideals, or ethos. You can always move your account between instances, or delete it altogether.

Our instance is generally themed around HIVE, cryptocurrencies and promoting decentralized, open source and free speech environments.

We understand Hive users value their data and for this reason we provide a privately-hosted server that's secured to our best capability. This way we remove the biggest barrier of joining the fediverse for many -- uncertainty of what server admins are doing with your information. All we want is to keep it safe and give you the ability to use this interesting and growing technology.

Hive interoperability?

We are currently exploring ways to bridge the fediverse and Hive together if the demand arises. Some ideas so far:

  • Easy account verification using signed messages on the Hive blockchain
  • Bridges between other Hive communication platforms

Why did you make this?

Because we believe in the freedom of speech and unrestricted ability to communicate with others. There are no monetary incentives for ourselves to host, manage or create for this technology. The incentive is interest and personal utility.

Very well played. Targeting the target audience. That's good marketing!

Is there a specific link for Hive users to join and engage with other fediverse instances that allows us to take advantage of privately-hosted server that's secured.

Yeah, https://dline.xyz ....... probably should've included it in the post

@guiltyparties, thank you, I've successfully logged into the web instance. Using IOS, I tried logging into Amaroq but get an error message, "Login request failed. Unable to connect to the Mastodon instance. Please try again later or with a different instance". Not sure how to select another instance. Is there another setting that must be approved/set by the admin?

Since I'm not on IOS I haven't tested it with Amaroq. I have it set up mobile on Husky and on my desktop via Pleroma. Are you sure you entered all the information correctly when logging in?

This is a cool one i believe but i am still new to this dline of a thing, i signed up for an account yesterday but i still can't find my way around after waiting some hours for the approval.

Because of bots it has to be manually approved until the verification is put in place. It's a learning curve.

Oh. Alright. Thanks!

Looks a lot like a blogroll from Tumblr, sweet.

Thanks for the interesting post. Found out a lot of new and useful information for myself.

I think this is a more than valid point. Talked so some OG's from r/cryptocurrency and they clearly said that $MOON token are lowering the quality of the sub cuz ppl try to farm them at any cost.

This is a great project. I hate twitter but I love this fediverse.

Garbage!

!popcorn

This is exactly what you normally preach.

You dont know me Cunt.

But you will...

This is an interesting thing (the first time I hear about this), it could be used for Hive Communities I think ... when you mention federations - it's a concept about exchange information between various systems in federations, they're mostly used in military simulations and command and control systems ... that's what I know about that ... also there are some open standards, for example, HLA - high-level architecture ... not sure how this could be implemented in crypto ...

Congratulations @guiltyparties! You have completed the following achievement on the Hive blockchain and have been rewarded with new badge(s) :

Time to go on your Hive Tour

Welcome to the fediverse been there for a year. It is a amazing service. I that your using both frontends

This sounds really interesting, but I haven't quite understood it yet. To me it sounds like a "mini internet" which is not on a blockchain? On second thought there seems to be a lot of information available. But I am astounded that I haven't heard about the fediverse yet...

If other people are interested, here are some links about what it is:

Would be great if Hive and fediverse could collaborate!

We'll be looking at different ways to bridge Hive and the fediverse protocol. It's not exactly the same type of technology but there are a lot of undiscovered possibilities.

Nice looks like a great dapp

Nice! now I have more reason to check fediverse again. I had account in several fediverse network but didn't bother to actually use them. For this, I'll test it out.

Thanks for all the help you bring to the #Hive ecosystem.

Very well played, I‘ll go any try it!

Interesting, there is probably a demand for this kind of service for sure. Ill be following.

Make an account and check it out. It's interesting technology that promotes a different type of decentralization.

It seems that on dline you would have greater ability to moderate content. It seems there is a level of control over content as well as content creators in the space you created.

Why not incorporate Hive upvotes and what draws people to it into space where content, if I am understanding correctly, can be moderated better. The protocol does allow for it. As a result you are single handily oppressing a key function for both things at the same time. In a big way it would appear that you embodying what we are supposed to be against which is oppression.

I respect your view points but how are you going to attract someone from Hive to use this if you are out right saying we don't believe in a core concept of what makes people love Hive?

Seems this could had been done without Hive? Just confused on the Hive angle and why so personnel with our investments and time into this community driven chain where people want more than freedom of speech but freedom from fiat systems that keep them constantly compromising their morals and ethics.

It's the fediverse which is by design and intention is supposed to support freedom of speech. Unless we're talking highly illegal content like child porn, I won't step in. Hive-style votes don't play in unless I suppose there is some serious modification involved. The idea behind any federated instance is to rekindle the free speech that was once common on the internet.

In general I don't think you understand what type of a protocol this is. This is a parallel technology to blockchain-based transparency and freedom of speech but it's not the same technology. We can't make it a blockchain just like we can't make a blockchain the fediverse. While a blockchain must have layered cross-chain solutions built on it to interact with other blockchains, the fediverse has this interactive capability by default.

The Hive angle here is simply making an instance that's a community for Hive users. Not all Hive users are on it and many opt for their own instances or others. This doesn't stop them from interacting with one another but having this Hive-focused portal is for a sense of unity and to help people connect on something that's new to them.

https://umm-csci.github.io/senior-seminar/seminars/spring2020/shaw.pdf

Furthermore, each instance has less users than
Twitter, and so less data to offer if they wished to monetize
it. If an instance did monetize its user’s data, Mastodon has
tools to allow easy switching of instances, so users would
have little reason to stay on an instance that did not respect
their privacy.
This creates an environment where instance owners have
strong incentives to protect users information, and users are
not locked into any particular host

So when I read this initially I do think I misunderstood that there was features to allow monetization.

...but having this Hive-focused portal is for a sense of unity and to help people connect on something that's new to them.

Ok so this does sound good but why are they wanting to come to Hive? Free speech or freedom from fiat? Yes, the price of Hive is low and activity will surly be higher once we break certain dollar levels but I think community of Hive better suited to handle freeloaders than in '17/'18 ie vote4vote guies. It just seems Hive could be incorporated more on dline and put on display for people to see how content creators in Nigeria or Venezuela can survive with blogging on hive. I mean such a key tool will help destabilize governments and free people but not before they were already starved half way to death.

I think some of them do try to monetize by stacking the instance with influencers and then locking account subs. People try and get the handle of the instance. So far I can only think of one that could be doing that and it's just my suspicion (I don't care enough to confirm).

They don't always want to come to Hive. I had a chat with one to whom I offered a Hive account but he didn't want to monetize his content. He figured his writing (which was of excellent quality) was not good enough for monetization.

We currently have most of @Neoxian's "city" on dline but not everyone posts. I try and get people from all over the world so we can get some interesting discussions going. It helps to see the posts at least and they do get shared out. The Hive instance is the only one that I can think of or I've come across so far where we have people write in languages other than English. I'd like to see that broadened since so far its mostly Spanish that's used. Hive is global and that should carry over to our supporting communities like dline.

I dislike how you always meet me in the middle then make me respect you immensely with civil conversation jk but seriously I guess you sold me despite my differing opinions on Hive monetization though your points are valid. We should talk on phone one day you would be cool guy to talk to I think. I will participate in dline if accepted.

Haha thanks man. You got an active account there.

So tired I appreciate bro thank you!😴 will come tomorrow with it

Wow, this looks like an interesting project, @guiltyparties. Is there a bridge between the Pleroma network and Mastodon? I'd like to learn more about this. I'm a !Fediverse user from way back, including Diaspora*, GNUsocial, and more recently Mastodon.

I may have missed this before. I am on a different Mastodon instance, but followed you over there.

It would be cool to have some sort of bridge to Leo Threads, Ecency Waves and DBuzz so people can just post in one place. The Fediverse people are pretty particular about only using platforms that federate, but a lot of them are also anti-crypto. I talk about Hive there anyway as we need to raise awareness that not all crypto is the same.

I hate twitter but I love this fediverse, this great idea
