I’ve talked before about how trophy hunting had ruined gaming for me and that it was my 3080 that reignited that passion I once had for it. When I started to release what trophy hunting was doing to me it was when I was playing AC valhalla. I love the AC series. I’m a huge fan of it and have been excited for every single entry in the series. And I felt the same for Valhalla, that was until I started playing it.

The story of the game itself is great to an extent. We play as a viking making alliances in Europe while trying to carve a piece of it out for ourself. The game, like Odysessey, went the RPG route and included dialogue branches, which I just loved.

However, the classic formula of the AC series was not with this game. In Origins, the first game that marked the change to this style of play, we were hunting down The Order of the Ancients in a bid for revenge, it was through this vengeance that The Hidden ones were created. In Odysessey, we hunt down The Cult of Cosmos, the organization that would later become the Order of the Ancients, then the Templars.

In both previous games, hunting these members down was really front and center, more so with Origins. But in Valhalla, it takes a major step back. Instead of being a main storyline, it feels more like a side activity. Of course there are a few times were we gank some of the members of The Order of Ancients in the storyline, but it felt like it was there just to be there.

Now the head of the Order is someone you meet in the main story of the game, but it isn’t revealed until the end who he is. Ubisoft tries to do this convoluted plot where the head of the Order didn’t actually like the Order, and hinted at the creation of the Templars.

This moment however was ruined for me because when I played the game I actually killed all the order members before the big reveal of the leader was revealed, however, the leader’s image actually showed up on the Order of Ancient menu instead of a black silhouette.

Valhalla also dives into Norse lore, with us experiencing the moments of Odin, and seeing what he went through and some of the trials he faced. This kind of took me out of the game. But it was needed for the “twist” of the main game, which is sort of confusing, especially since there's two versions of this side arcs story. The first vision is gotten through completing the Asgard arc, and the second is through completing some side content that shows the same scene but taking place in The First Civilization.

The stories in the game are interesting, however feel sort of meh at a certain point. At a point in the game, a character gets kidnapped and you need to gather your allies to free them. By the time you get a high enough level to tackle the quest, you should only have 3 regions left, which are all a higher level than the quest to rescue your friend. However, the quest to rescue your friend seems like it was meant to be “last” level. The reason it feels like this is because you need to call on your previous allies to siege a fort. After you complete this mission, you go to the other 3 regions just to make more alliances that plays no other parts in the game and feels a bit like filler.

My biggest gripe about the game, however, is that it doesn’t feel like you’re a viking. Sure you can raid towns but when you try to be a viking and shoot those running away from you, you get the classic “Killing another civilian will cause desync”. I was hoping that we would actually be able to, you know, murder and pillage, but that wasn’t the case.

Was I wrong?

When I first played this game, it quickly become more like a chore. I was adamant about doing everything in a region before doing the story in that region. This would have me doing hours of work before actually playing the story. And man, this just killed the game for me. I lost all interest in it and just didn’t like it.

At this point, I realized what trophy hunting was doing me. In fact, I’ve been very wary of trying to play the game again, feeling the same thing would happen. But I gave it another go, and holy crap, was I ever wrong. Despite my problems with the game, I love it. Of course this isn’t a really a “assassin vs templar” story, but running into historical figures that I actually know about, having to make tough choices, and being able to play as a pg-13 version of a viking is just fun.

I’ve completed the main game, and can’t wait to try out the expansions/dlcs, for it because there are a lot!

Ubisoft Connect problems

So I have Ubisoft plus and that is how I was able to play this game. You might realize that there are no screenshots of later in the game. This is because everytime I took a screenshot the damn game crashed. Apparently this has been an issue since the game came out, and it sucks balls! If I am able to fix this problem, I will also be posting reviews of the dlc content!

Sin embargo, mi mayor queja sobre el juego es que no se siente como si fueras un vikingo. Claro que puedes asaltar ciudades, pero cuando intentas ser un vikingo y disparar a los que huyen de ti, obtienes el clásico "Matar a otro civil provocará la desincronización". Tenía la esperanza de que en realidad pudiéramos, ya sabes, asesinar y saquear, pero ese no fue el caso.

¿Estaba equivocado?
Cuando jugué este juego por primera vez, rápidamente se volvió más como una tarea. Estaba convencido de hacer todo en una región antes de hacer la historia en esa región. Esto me tendría haciendo horas de trabajo antes de jugar la historia. Y hombre, esto acaba de acabar con el juego para mí. Perdí todo interés en él y simplemente no me gustó.

En este punto, me di cuenta de lo que me estaba haciendo la caza de trofeos. De hecho, he sido muy cauteloso a la hora de intentar volver a jugar el juego, sintiendo que sucedería lo mismo. Pero le di otra oportunidad, y santa mierda, ¿alguna vez me equivoqué? A pesar de mis problemas con el juego, me encanta. Por supuesto, esta no es realmente una historia de "asesino contra templario", pero encontrarme con figuras históricas que realmente conozco, tener que tomar decisiones difíciles y poder jugar como una versión pg-13 de un vikingo es simplemente divertido. .

Completé el juego principal y no veo la hora de probar las expansiones/dlcs, ¡porque hay muchas!

Problemas con Ubisoft Connect

Así que tengo Ubisoft plus y así es como pude jugar este juego. Es posible que te des cuenta de que no hay capturas de pantalla de más adelante en el juego. Esto se debe a que cada vez que tomaba una captura de pantalla, el maldito juego fallaba. Aparentemente, esto ha sido un problema desde que salió el juego, ¡y apesta!
