CONVERSATION GAMING: Star Wars | SHADOWS of the EMPIRE

If you are a Millenial used to Star Wars: Battlefront, then you may look at this game as super ghetto, but it's the GrandDaddy of great Star Wars games. I love the modern Star Wars games too, but there was something special about this game that you'd had to have been there in the 90s to have felt its awesomeness. You have to understand that having a Nintendo 64 was a thousand times cooler than having the new iPhone is today. Even when the Gameboy or iPad was new, it was like having alien Covenant technology.

Here's our nostalgic image flashback to all of us who used to own the N64 cartridge. I came to Asia in 2001 and was AMAZED to see Chinese cartridge ripoffs for Nintendo that had EVERY game on one cartridge. They also had Playstation 1 ripoff shops that had every Playstation game copied for about fifty cents. All you had to do was pay some guy to solder a chip on the Playstation's mainframe.

I saw Return of the Jedi when I was 3 years old and remember how scary I thought ATSTs were. I would have nightmares of me walking in the woods with my Ewok friends and then one of these grey death machines shooting me dead with its turbo lasers and then my mom and Ewok friends crying over my dead body. Seeing this in the game gave all of us a shock the first time we saw it in the game too. Now we know to keep running around and to try and shoot this bitch in the back.

What a failer the speeder version of the game was. Wave Race was a fantastic game that was smooth and looked great about the same time as this came out. Too bad they didn't work together, because this was a frustrating E.T. from the Atari like experience.

hoth.jpg

This game overall sucked ass, but how fucking cool was the first level on Hoth? My mom saw me playing this on the N64 one day and was amazed at how much it looked liked the movies and she was someone who was one million percent anti-video games.

This is a game that did a lot of things I still see creeping up in modern Star Wars games. What did you old school gamers think of Shadows of the Empire?

Awww man! I LOVED Shadows of the Empire!! I can't say I even knew what the story was or anything, and I remember getting super peeved at the level where... you're jumping on a train in a junkyard? Or something? But yeah, that first level on Hoth was fantastic!

Many hours were played. 😁

Yeah, we spent so many angry hours on that damn train and were asking why the hell were there trains in Star Wars anyways?
