SKYHILL -- yet another roguelike

About a week or so ago, I decided to sell off my 150ish steam trading cards and have since made a whopping $6 from the sales. Then! In order to use my vast treasure in the most responsible of ways, I searched for games under $5 that also happened to be on special...

...and discovered SKYHILL.

A $22 game for a little over $2?

$2 that I acquired via the selling of useless digital cards?

Score!

And I still have some left -- and still incoming -- for when another cheapo game takes my fancy.

Beware, however...

For if you want to imitate my grand achievement, searching the Under $5 section on the Steam Store is a perilous journey fraught with hentai and sexual JRPGs.

We begin as a man -- a simple man. There is chaos outside, war has broken out, bio-warefare has ensued, and mutants and death is all that awaits any who have survived.

Trapped in the penthouse on the 100th floor, our goal is to loot, craft, and survive as we slowly make our way down to the ground floor and flee this nightmare.

We must fight various monsters and

search

every

room

for useful goods and treasures!

Giggling at Skyrim references.

The goods we pick up can be used to craft weapons, to upgrade the penthouse -- that you will need to return to constantly in order to craft, cook, and sleep -- and to repair broken lighting and elevators.

You will find medicine, alcohol, food! Food is so incredibly important. You will lose a bit of your hunger bar every time you walk anywhere, every time you try to fix something without the appropriate materials, and you'll lose vast chunks of your hunger bar if you dare return to your penthouse to sleep.

Oh, and you know, it's a roguelike so it's all RNG! 😁

As you descend the tower: you will discover voice recordings of a man who is being driven insane, newspaper articles speaking of the war, references to a serial killer, and other assorted things that help you to understand the world you find yourself in.

Or do they?

Turns out, for those lucky enough to get to the final floor of the tower, there are numerous endings available depending on what lore articles you discovered through the playthrough. The ending I got is what is considered the default ending... and after listening to all the voice recordings found on various floors, I really was not surprised by what happened.

It's a fairly decent roguelike, but I'm really not sure it's worth a RRP of $21.95.

$2 is pretty good though! I'd recommend it for the current special price.

For the RRP I'd expect a little... more. It feels lacking. The story is predictable. The levelling system could be improved. There are weapons that require you have an insane amount of dexterity, or strength or speed, or all three, and there's no possible way you can even acquire that much. Not without a New Game+ mode which it does not have.

It is good enough though, to want to keep playing in order to see the other endings and unlock all the achievements, and acquire more trading cards to sell for my next cheapo purchase.

As with all roguelikes, I'd better get used to seeing the above screen!

Until next time,

Thanks for stopping by! 🙃
