Is Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodhunt the new Fortnite killer?

in Hive Gaming2 years ago

Those who hang out in our Discord knows that one of the games I've been preaching the most lately is Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodhunt. This is a new battle royale game set in the universe of Vampire: The Masquerade that released recently. I had no hype about this game and only decided to give it a go after watching @daltono having a good time in his videos. Go check them out and you'll know what I'm talking about.

I loved it so much that I ended up getting the battle pass pretty much instantly. Let's take a look at what makes this game good.

What makes it unique?

I want to start off by highlighting the unique things about the game and use them to explain why I like the game so much.

The zone is not a circle

One of the most traditional features of battle royale games is the ever enclosing circle that pushes players closer together towards the end of the game. This feature is of course present in Bloodhunt but it's not a circle. The zone can basically end up in any shape or form before eventually closing in on a single building for the last few zones.

This adds a level of uncertainty to each game that I really like. It makes predicting how the zone will look and be much harder. When the gas is done moving the next zone is revealed and the gas starts moving again pretty much instantly. This adds to the fast pace of the game. No thinking. Just go!

Classes and clans

This isn't necessarily something unique seeing as Apex Legends has had this for years. Nonetheless, before starting each game you get to choose between 1 out of 7 classes that has two unique class skills. These are split among 4 clans taken from the Vampire universe that gives you a passive skill.

The Brujah clan features the Brute and Vandal classes. They are defensive fighters which make then great for fighting up close and personal. It's not uncommon for the Brujah classes to be smacking you with melee weapons. Their passive ability increase your defensive powers when you're close to enemies.

The Nosferatu clan features the Saboteur and Prowler classes. They are more on the stealthy side seeing as their clan skill let's you turn semi-invisible while crouching. The Saboteur is my personally preferred class. It has a Vanish skill that lets you escape or trick opponents by quickly changing positions. They also have the Sewer Bomb skill which let's you put down traps that damage opponents when they're triggered.

The Toreador clan features the Siren and Muse classes. Their skills are more supportive than the rest and they seem to be most suited for group play. I rarely see them in solo. I don't even know what their skills are as I haven't really tried them out.

There's also the Ventrue class which features a single class; the Enforcer. The Enforcer can turn immune to damage for a little while at the expense of not being to do anything offensive. This makes them powerhouses as they can get real close to opponents without taking damage, even if they've been seen, then smack them up with some melee weapons.

Buffs and PvE

Scattered around the map you'll find civilians, aptly named mortals, standing around. Feeding on these gives you buffs that last for the rest of the match. These buffs give you healing per second, increased melee damage or cooldown reduction to each of your active skills.

You start out with three buff slots but this can be increased by downing and sucking out the life force of other players or by killing NPC soldiers found at certain checkpoints called the Entity and then feeding on them. This adds another layer to the early game. You're not only focused on finding the right weapons but also the right buffs. You also want to be pushing kills in the early game to increase your buff slots as quickly as possible. It's great.

Buffs can be seen in the lower left below your health. An open circle represents open slots while dots represents closed slots.

Vertical movement

The movement in this game also deserves a special mention. The movement is real smooth and adds a lot of fun to the game. You can slide around, jump around and even scale the side of buildings meaning that fights happen as much on the rooftops as they do in the streets.

Respawning

Respawning is another thing that isn't new to battle royales and that Apex Legends introduced. One thing that's different though is that you can also respawn while playing solo. When you get downed you can actually regenerate and get back on your feet unless the player, or someone else, who downed you finished you off.

Everyone also starts with one extra life that gets spent for a respawn if they get finished. This extra life can also be regained by feeding on a special type of mortal. This means you can get several chances to redeem yourself. It's best to not die at all though seeing as one death means another buff slot to the player who got you. Now they're gonna be even stronger the next time you meet.

A keeper

This game is a keeper for sure. I bought the battle pass which I mean to grind out over the next two months alongside the Fortnite battle pass. Seems like both of them are quite accessible without spending all day grinding which is nice for the working man.

They also added ranked mode today which I'm excited to try out. Being matched against players of similar skill levels instead of throwing everyone into the same mix is something I like. I'm not sure how the whole system works so I'm gonna have to get back to you all on that.

If anyone is playing this on PC feel free to reach out in our community Discord Server so we can go for a few games. I haven't tried duos or trios yet so I'm excited to see how that works.

I’ve been playing this and Fortnite and honestly don’t see how anything can kill Fortnite at this point. It’s got people’s favorite characters form so many different universes, the gameplay is fantastic, and there is just so much to do. Bloodhunt it also pretty great, but I’ve found it to be a lot harder. I enjoy both though. You did a great job of explaining this game.

I'm the same these days. Some times I sprinkle a little bit of Elden Ring on top but I mostly stick to these two. Just to fun. Bloodhunt is definitely harder. I can barely get into the top 10 after leaving those early bot matches.

The game looks great, and I find it disturbing that you managed to create a character very much like yourself.

The fact that the area is not a circle adds something quite interesting to the game. It makes every game feel unique. I don't mean to say that when the zone is a circle every game is the same since the closing point is always different, but a zone with different shapes sounds so much better imo.

I think about respawning also CoD Warzone has the same, right? I'm 90% sure that when you get knocked down you can heal yourself.

The weirdly shaped zone creates an interesting spread of players. With a circle most player are spread around in it but with these shapes some people get squeezed together real tight. Makes the game harder for sure.

I think there was an item you could get that let you get back up in Warzone but you gotta find it or buy it. It's been a few years since I played though.

I definitely had no idea about this game until I saw some of your posts, a Vampire Battle Royale? WOW seems like a great idea, I wish I had my PC in condition to play it, I still don't have a good video card, but it will come.

I like that this time you give a little more details about what you think is innovative about the game, for example, the area that closes is not in the shape of a circle, or the freedom of movement that takes the combat to another level, which makes the game more attractive.

I hope you get to try it some day. Doesn't look like it's gonna die anytime soon as there's 20k people constantly playing on Steam which doesn't include numbers from Epic and PS5.

Yeah I'd really like it because it definitely looks like it's here to stay for a long time.

The game looks very good, it even calls my attention to play it, but I just investigated the minimum requirements hahaha

lol. I don’t even check minimum requirements anymore. I wish it was the same for you friend.

ç'est la vie

Cool! yea, the game has some unique and very cool/interesting things about it. I like how it has several classes that each have unique abilities.

Most important is that it's FUN! :)

This game has a great view, I would like to try it someday. Always a pleasure to read it, best regards!

this game looks so atmospheric it's like there are fifty shades of grey in terms of color variation. 😏

😂

All right now, this looks interesting. I feel like the battle royale format works best on smaller maps with more focus on close quarter combat like this. Hyper Scape did this pretty well, unfortunately it flopped.
I've always been a fan of Vampire: The Masquerade, so I might give this a shot!
