So, today we harvested the first set of cucumber fruits on out multistory garden setup and the interns were quite happy about it.
Harvesting is one of the last operation that is been carried out on the garden.
Unlike other vegetable fruits, cucumbers can be harvested when there reach a reasonable size.
Fruits like tomato, pepper etc, there are harvested when there are half ripe and the rippening process continues till it is fully ripened. This is done to increase the shelf life of the fruits which can stay for up to 2 weeks before it will get bad.
But that of cucumbers isn't so.
Depending on how you like your cucumbers or what it is going to be used for, cucumbers can be ready for harvesting at any time.
If it is going to be used as salad, it is best harvested when it is still tender and least few inches long..
It is advisable to harvest cucumber fruits when it is due, this is to make the plant focus it energy on other new fruits pooping out and making more fruits.
Leaving the fruits to stay long make the cucumber fruit not palatable for consumption, it will turn red and hardy .

Lovely cucumbers and nice yield. Look as though you will have many more to harvest later - there are a lot of blooms.

That's why you can't grow cucumbers from store bought cucumber seeds hehe, as well as eggplant for example, they are hasvested when they are green! good to know ;)
