This is how the preparations for the harvest went in our first greenhouse. |ENG||ESP|

in HiveGarden2 years ago (edited)

You know something, I was remembering how difficult it was to have this project in mind, all the time and dedication it took, all the money invested and the small details that arose and generated some frustration. After approximately 2 years growing in greenhouses I want to review how our project started almost from 0, because we started in a greenhouse that was abandoned in a certain way, it only had its structure intact, so we bought the necessary implements to repair it and to start with our first commercial cultivation of paprika.
After this came expansion, repairs due to rain storms, loss of crops due to virus or pest, among other things that we have struggled with in order to bring fruits to market, so I will review a little how was our start in this world.

A couple of years ago... / Hace un par de años atrás...

At the beginning of everything we can see a greenhouse practically abandoned, it only had the structure in perfect condition, however it had no plastic roof and the mesh on the sides was completely deteriorated. We agreed with the owner to see what possibilities existed to buy this space, so after some negotiations, we reached an agreement of 3 crops with shared profits and then the greenhouse would become my property through the purchase.
The offer did not look bad at all, even though we did not know anything about the attention that a crop required, we took the risk since we would have that help when we started.

Ok, let's start the work./Ok, comencemos las labores.

#1 - Greenhouse fodder, roof and side nets.

Forraje del invernadero, techo y mallas laterales.

For this we bought an anti-strip or anti-aphid mesh as it is usually called is the one that would protect the surroundings of the pest, such as insects, birds, rodents, usually it is said that this mesh is 100% that is to say the holes in it are so tiny that nothing would enter it, however that is false, the white fly is so small that it can enter through these holes. The mesh would have a cost of 550$, and would be of dimensions 100x4, only for the sides and one of the front faces of the greenhouse.

The roof would be the most problematic, at that time there were no plastics available in the area, plus they are much more expensive, to solve and plant as quickly as possible we decided to replace this with a raffia mesh 80%, being the roof would not have much importance the issue of the pest, the mesh should be white to not generate much shade and that the plants do not grow more than normal.

Something I should point out is that to do this job you need someone who is completely crazy to climb 6mts high and staple these meshes on the roof, to our relief there was, a local person was dedicated to this work and told us that in 1 week would have everything ready, but first made some repairs to the pipes, put some plastic sheets on the tubes to prevent the mesh from deteriorating easily and began his work.

At first glance everything in order, but the small problem arose, I made the wrong calculations, because a greenhouse of 40x20 meters covers 800mts2 in dimensions, so 2 rolls of mesh 100x4 would be enough, however my mistake was in not knowing how to calculate the area of the arches, which needed a little more width in the meshes and a little more height, not to mention that one of the meshes was defective from the factory and was 70x4 so we had to go to buy another one in the following days, but for 2 days we could see the space in the center of the greenhouse.

#2 Fertilizers + soil plowing.

Fertilizantes + arado de tierra.

After the most difficult work of placing the nets was ready in a certain part, we began to work with the fertilization of the land, with a compost that has as ingredients rice husks, egg shells, chicken and sheep eses, besides that we bought some chemical fertilizers of a worldwide recognized brand, they are of an excellent quality and expensive.

First the tractor had to plow the land, and leave it suitable for applying the compost, for this a tractor broke the layer of soil with spades, and then with a harrow finished the job. Then the compost was integrated by hand, that is to say, we had to load the compost bag by bag and empty it on the soil.

#3 Rotocultor

The last step in the preparation of the soil was to finish breaking up the remaining clods of earth, in addition to integrating all the compost with the soil. To do this, a rototiller was used, whose job was to grind the soil to the point of leaving it very loose as a powder, which would give better results in terms of rooting.

#4 Drip System

Sistema de Goteo

Let's remember that drip irrigation is the best method of irrigation for crops, because you minimize water expenditure, you can apply fertilizers by fertigation method, everything goes through the tapes and falls directly to the plant, it is much easier to handle and no workers are needed for this, because we simply open a series of keys.
The system is not very difficult to calculate, making some basic calculations we can obtain the distance between rows and the amount of plants that we would sow, for this greenhouse would be a total of 5400, with the method of double tape, that is to say two rows would have 50cm of separation between them and then 1m would separate them of the following pair, this to gain a little of space.

#5 Sowing

Siembra

The last thing was the sowing, and for this we applied to transplant the seedlings of 45 days in seedbed, for which we had to open the holes with some sticks, the size of the cones of the plants. The planting work would be done by the women, since they have much more agility in this, they simply place the cone and add a little soil.

#6 Harvest

Cosecha

Finally from here would begin our learning, care and attention of the crop for 3 months until its first cut, where the plants would be productive for 5-6 months approximately. During this time I understood how to fertilize the plants, the necessary amount that is required, insecticides and fungicides that I should apply, some microelements that are necessary for the plants to be more productive and other aspects.

The care of the plants themselves, which includes tying them up, leaf removal and eliminating secondary guides, all this to maximize the size of the fruits and maximize profits.

From here everything began, our entrepreneurship, the radical change of profession, because my dad had a company of installation and sale of electrical materials, I was studying electrical engineering, so we left the city to go to the countryside.
A change that I really liked, to the point of changing my career to study a little more about plants.
So this is a reminder of how it all started :), see you next time.

One last thing to add, he is pigui, he is the craziest person I have ever met in my life, he was the one who put the netting in place and you can see him doing some balancing on the greenhouse. He told me that he worked in a circus as a juggler and fell from 4 meters high breaking some ribs and having other fractures, since that day he stopped being afraid of heights and is dedicated to this.
