Our Story After the Super Typhoon Tino

in ASEAN HIVE COMMUNITY24 days ago

Happy Wednesday Hivers!

If only we could move the Philippines to a place untouched by typhoons, I think every Filipino would agree. In a year, it’s almost impossible for our country not to be hit by one. Regular typhoons are manageable, but when a super typhoon strikes, the devastation is overwhelming—leaving countless people homeless and lives deeply affected.

Last week, PAGASA forecasted that a super typhoon would hit the Visayas this week. Since people are still traumatized by previous super typhoons, everyone immediately started preparing, tying down their houses with ropes, stocking up on food and water, refueling their vehicles, and even panic buying. However, no matter how much we prepare, there are still things that are simply beyond our control.

The rain during the typhoon was intense, strong winds and heavy downpour battered the area. Because the rivers overflowed, many houses were washed away by the flood. Some people evacuated early, but there were still a few who refused to leave, which sadly led to the loss of lives.

Some roads even looked like rivers because of the massive flooding. Many rivers had overflowed, turning streets into rushing streams of water.

Many municipalities in Cebu experienced severe flooding, but according to the LGU, Talisay suffered the most damage because many houses were washed away. It’s truly heartbreaking to see so many people left without homes, without clothes, and struggling to find food and clean drinking water.

During the super typhoon, I stayed in the mountains where our subdivision is located because we have a senior citizen with us. When the typhoon struck, the winds were extremely strong, but fortunately, we didn’t experience flooding. However, there was no signal, the network was completely down, so I wasn’t able to check any updates on social media.

When I returned to my brother’s house, I finally got a weak signal and was able to open my account. As I checked my feed, it was filled with heartbreaking posts, massive flooding, houses swept away, and so many people left homeless.

I’m truly grateful to God that the flood didn’t reach our house. We live close to the Mananga River, and thankfully, the water didn’t rise high enough to reach our area. But many houses near the river were completely washed away. It’s heartbreaking to see the places you pass by every day, where you once saw people smiling, now destroyed, with homes gone and lives tragically lost.

The picture below shows the area in Talisay that was severely affected by the typhoon—it’s just a few meters away from our place. These photos aren’t mine; some of them were taken by Cebuano vloggers, while others came from well-known Cebu news outlets such as Sunstar and The Freeman.

These last two pictures were taken on the way to the northern part of Cebu, which was also heavily affected by severe flooding.

Since my siblings and I love organizing outreach programs, we decided to prepare donations for those affected by the typhoon in Talisay as our way of giving thanks for keeping our family safe. It’s the least we can do to help ease, even just a little, the pain and hardship they’re going through.

Its devastating to see families lose their homes, belongings and sense of security. I pray for strength, safety and comfort for all those who are struggling right now. May everyone affected find hope and help in this difficult time, and may our communities rise stronger together. Stay safe, everyone. 🙏
