How to Cut Raw Jackfruit

Do you know this very interesting fact about Jack fruit ? What you eat when its raw is thrown away when its ripen.

We have got quite a good number of Jackfruit this year at my native and they have been growing without any effort. This is the time when we eat them raw - the stringy flesh is a nice replacement of any meat - it takes the flavor of the spices that you cook with. So it can taste like chicken or mutton based on how you prepare - and it imitates well as a replacement for meat. So if you have a real good cooking skill, it will be difficult to differentiate if you tell people it's meat. We do a variety of items out of it, but cutting it raw is the most challenging task - the sticky latex substance will be a real mess, if you do not know how to deal with it. I have tried to cut it myself once and I really messed up and took hours to clean them. Since I was in my native, I had the help from an experienced hand - our maid who is with us for last three decades. After Mom, she is the one who knows most about the old techniques - you need to put generous amounts of oil on your hands and the tool that you use to cut it. So she cut it clean and the lady was very happy to use them instantly.

If you watch the video close then you can observe, we are using only the flesh and discarding the inner core that contains the jackfruit and the tendrils. This is a very interesting fact about Jackfruit - when its raw, we eat the soft flesh and when its ripen, we throw away this flesh and eat the jackfruit. And do you also know that this is the largest tree-borne fruit in the world ?

I have seen in some videos online, where, people retain these inner part (having the jackfruit) when using in the raw form, and I did the same mistake first time, looking at these online techniques. But it did not taste the same as Mom used to cook. So when I inquired with her, I could figure out where the problem was. This soft flesh (without the inner part) becomes very soft when boiled and can replace all most all your meat needs, if you prepare it thinking as if you are cooking your meat. I bet, the taste will be near similar. And you can store these for long time as well - I got a lot and stored them to enjoy in frequent intervals. We have got a lot of them , it was fun to see a lot growing at the root of a tree, that was covered earlier. Little did we realize, there were so many including a huge one.

We have left that big one to ripen - they will be ready sooner than the smaller ones. And we will continue eating the small ones coming up till next month.

And I am not going to tell about the health benefits, its even used as medicine, but I love the taste - both raw and ripe. I could eat one alone, when I was young. And this fry today, made out of those raw jackfruit was mouth watering.

The Jackfruit are so tasty. It's so nice to have it ripen. But I never try it raw, it means it not sweet. And also you can fry it, perhaps I can give it a try !

Try these fry or fritter once, you will just love it - it tastes no less than mutton fritters.

I haven't tasted this fruit ever in my life but after looking your post and your views about jackfruit i really want to taste it.

It is one of the best and largest fruits in the world. It is useful for eliminating cancerous cells, I like to drink it as mixed juice with mango, it's delicious. Have you tried it?

How do you extract the juice ? There is a special technique used in our area - we use paddy straws to get the think juice and there is a small piece (in ripen jackfruit) that should not be eaten, so you should take that out. I have not tried the jackfruit with mango because they are considered opposite food, we do follow lot of ancient advice.

During this week I felt problems in my digestive system in addition to visual impairment. I would like to know if I eat jackfruit seeds, does it have a good effect and I can grind them before eating?

The raw flesh as well as the ripen ones are very good source of fiber, the raw ones being better. However, the seeds does not have much for bowl movements, so I would suggest to try some raw as shown here. You can cook any item of your choice.

And this fry today, made out of those raw jackfruit was mouth watering.

Some ancient way of cutting tool - we use it in almost every house. Modern people use knife, but this is more efficient.

Nice post. I once ate a delicious Indonesian dish made with green jackfruit. It was my first time. Indeed it was a great meat replacement. Since then I enjoy making numerous recipes with green jackfruit. I buy the canned version as I do not live in a tropical region. I looking forward to preparing a dish with the green jackfruit which comes directly from a tree.

The ones that comes direct will definitely taste better, fritters are the most tasty version that even kids like.

I like jackfruits. I have never eaten a raw jackfruit, or fried jackfruit before. The shops we bought from the shop are usually ripe ones.

Tell them to bring the raw ones when they are young, we now get them in local vegetable shops - cut and ready to cook, so may be ask them to sell them this way so that people can taste the raw ones. The raw has more health benefits.

This looks delicious. I have never tried Jackfruit. I wonder if it is available here. It might be in some specialty stores, but it is probably expensive.

We give it free to people here, if its a tropical region, then it must be there and not costly because there is no cost involved to grow it.

It has got some nice medicinal properties, do a google search and you will be surprised. More ever, this plant does not need any care - once it grows, you just enjoy the fruits.

It is Super nice - the raw one will taste like soft meat when cooked and the ripen one is sweet and delicious meat. And it has so many health benefits.

I heard a lot about Jack fruit, but never tested it raw or ripen. Only eat Jack fruit chips during my south India visit. Would love to try it soon!

You must try it, this is the season for the raw ones. The ripen ones will come out by 1st week of June.

We usually eat ripe jackfruit here. However, very few people eat raw jackfruit as a vegetable. So I liked this method very much. Jackfruit has a lot of sticky substance so it is very important to cut it. Thanks for sharing
