Where were you 10 years ago?

I'd like to play back @sjarvie5's challenge from the previous season, inspired by @fotostef's post. But this time, you don't have to make a post. Just share a picture and a few paragraphs about where you were 10 years ago in the comments section. If possible, you can mention the date or month.

In April 2012, I was in Medan, North Sumatra, with my 3 colleagues to do some work. In our free time, we'd like to take a trip to Lake Toba. But my Medanese friend said that we wouldn't make it due to the tight schedule, so we'd better go to Taman Simalem Resort in Tanah Karo instead. He ensured that the resort has the best view of Lake Toba. It was the right decision. From that place, we can see Lake Toba as a whole: very large like no limits. It's so magnificent!

27/06/2012 Ventspils, Latvia

Ten years ago, as it turns out, I was visiting my home town Ventspils in Latvia. The town is divided into two parts by the river Venta. One side of it has a lovely blue flag beach. On the other side, we have a wild coast. If you walk in the opposite direction from the port, at some point, you get to the fishers' village. And that's where the image was taken. Usually, it is the right indicator to turn around and head back. So, a good stroll on a good day breathing in the fresh Baltic air!

this one looks exactly like Paradise, too!

it was a good day, the weather definitely helped in making it look that way 😄

Wow the sky was so clear. The rock and the sticks, are those to indicate the border sign?

Thank you for participating in the game.

The rock and the sticks are there for an unknown reason. Maybe it is for the border or something to do with fishing... hmmm, really don't know 😂 but looks good 👍

A fun game! I happily jump on this. 10 years ago my family ventured 'travelling overseas' for the 1st time, and also it was the 1st (and the last) time I travelled by air. The last week of April saw us packing bags and travelling by train to Moscow, which turned out to be our way station where we were supposed to fly off... On April, 29 we arrived to the beautiful seaside town of Marmaris, Turkey. Our little babygirl you may see in the photo above; she took a little part in urban explorations too, but in particular, due to her tender age, obviously she was more into hot sand, cookies and ice-cream xD

NB. 10 years ago, I didn’t have the habit of shooting .raw format, moreover, I even reduced to 'medium' the size of jpegs when shooting, so that my only 4Gb flash card would last enough for the whole trip, and I didn’t do a lot of same takes. I borrowed my 1st camera - Canon 350D - and two lenses: 50mm 1.4 and Sigma 12-24mm (this choice proved to be ok!)

That's so sweet! I was not raw back then either, so jpeg buddies! 😁

'jpeg buddies' -- hell YEAH!!!!! 😁😁

Ahh she's so cute. If I were her, I'd like some cookies and ice cream too :D It's great to see photos of the moments when the kids were little. How old is your daughter now? I would love to read this story in its full version and see her current photos 😍

Oh yeah, I used to have that habit too. Reduced the image size and have no backup. Geez!

Thank you for participating in the game.

thank you for all the kind words! all of my family is still addicted to ice-cream and especially !PIZZA... 🍕 the babygirl is in her teen years, and here is a photo from last year that I consider to be a successful portrait... ofc with a punch of photoshop and raw processing, as usual, hehe 😁

2021_may_4612w.jpg

ps. this photo was captured again with Sigma -- but quite a different one! my fave 50mm (not an 'Art series' tho)

Wow, she's big and cute and she has beautiful eyes 😍 Ah those ice creams steal my attention. lol.

This picture is great with your story. So fun!

thanks. I have extremely good memories with the help of these photos; but to face the truth, the photos are quite amateur, said Sigma 12-24 is not a good lens. its wide angle is the only 'pro', the rest are 'contras' xD today I produce a way better captures. 🤸

🍕🍕 !PIZZA for you 🍕🍕

10 Years ago May 20, 2012, I hiked to The Wave in northern Arizona.
Here is a post too. Photogames: Where were you 10 years ago? The Wave

Stunning location, those lines are something special!

Thanks, it is amazing.

That's an amazing adventure and great pictures. The marbled sandstones are fantastic. Nature is a great artist, isn't it?

Thank you for participating in the game.

Hey, my favorite game! At least as long as I have a lightroom catalog 10 years old :)

_MG_0249.jpg

Well on May 25th 2012 I was at Paxoi, one of the Greek islands on the Ionian sea. Some people refer to it as the Caribbean of Greece and some others as the Greek Riviera. In any case it is a very popular place for sailing and it has the most memorable teal waters I have ever seen! I was there working as a photographer for a travel magazine so I was rather busy all day long but I do have some cool pictures from back then!

image.png

And a screenshot from the lightroom to back up my words and of course the metadata are intact at the original picture!

Woah, you are the nearest to the date! And what a location, is it heaven?

Wow, the teal waters is stunning! And the boats make the whole picture more beautiful. 😍

Thank you for participating in the game.

Wow, looks like I'm still on time :)
I did not find interesting photos and stories in May 10 years ago, but I remembered one of my first mountain hikes and ascents in August 2012. We climbed to the top of Mount Fisht, Adygea, Russia. It was very beautiful, exciting and careless hike, and it is connected with one of my most frightening memories — everything almost ended very badly when one of my friends fell. And all because of the mistakes that we made because of youth and lack of experience.

I didn’t fit into a couple of paragraphs of text and a couple of photos, so I wrote a post following Sara's @sjarvie5 example. Hope you enjoy! :)

Yay, what a great post.

Thank you!
This is a really important and memorable story, at least for me :)

I'm glad you're still on time. Your story was a great adventure! It was a nerve-wracking in some parts, fortunately it ended well. And the pictures are awesome!!

Thank you for participating in the game.

I was in a hurry to finish the story, because I started it late :) It really was a lucky coincidence in dates, which prompted me to write about this adventure. Otherwise, I would hardly have started describing this story in the near future, since I haven’t even written about it in Russian over the past 10 years :)
I also love stories with a happy end, and I am sincerely glad that mine turned out to be one of them. Glad you liked it!
Thanks for this wonderful game!

My pleasure :)

Here is my post where I was 10 years ago. All I can say I was at my photography start :)

Stunning colors! Love to read your whole story.

Thank you for participating in the game.

I actually have a gap in 2012 as i did not photograph a lot that year (no idea why). August 2012, vacation with friends in Igalo, Montenegro (on the photo you can see Mamula, a island prison back in the day)

You can see that smart phones were still not big here and internet in foreign country was probably to expensive :D

Fortunately there were papers and magazine to fill the time. Somehow I like to see people read in a "traditional" way. :D

Thank you for participating in the game.

i forgot about this photos. it made me smile as they are testament about a time :D

Thank you all for participating in the game. All entries are amazing. It's so hard to choose which ones are the winners. But anyway, here's the result:

1st Place: @qwerrie
2nd Place: @sharker
For the person that gets closets to the current date: @fotostef

Congratulations, guys!

Thank you very much!
Amazing entries indeed :)

You're welcome. It's my pleasure :)

all of a sudden! especially considering that I travel very little. this time, 10 years ago, it was a nice matching coincidence, so that I can show a not so ordinary thing for me 🤸

It's because your picture is distinct from the others. I can see and feel your memories from that picture; the difference between ten years ago and the present time. Ten years ago, we can see how small your daughter was. She was just a baby. Now, she's ten years older and not a baby anymore. 😃

Grazie Mille! so, a nice girl in the frame increase the chances for a photo to win a competition? although ... 😏

Oh wow! Thank you :) Congratulations to all!
This choice problem torments me all the time :)

You're welcome. It's my pleasure :)
