The Church of San Domenico

The church of San Domenico is a monument to the city where I live, and is also among the oldest churches, dating back to the 13th century. Viewed from the front, the church expresses all its magnificence, a place where the faithful can feel safe, both spiritually and physically. Inside there is a splendid copy of the Veiled Christ, a famous marble sculpture by Giuseppe Sanmartino, preserved in the Sansevero chapel in Naples.

Unfortunately, the church in the last decade has suffered some damage due to lack of maintenance over time, falling debris and cracks that have made the closure inevitable for the safety of people. Furthermore, an earthquake a few years ago caused the fall of one of the two towers that rise on the front, located about twenty meters high.

It was necessary to secure the entire building using scaffolding and delimiting the area adjacent to the access to the church. In all these years it has not been possible to find the financing for the renovation of the monument but perhaps something is moving and we could soon see the start of the works.

My wish is that the church of San Domenico can return to being usable to the faithful but also to the many tourists who visit the city, a place of interest that has registered thousands of visits since the beginning of the century, before its closure.

It is very old, its geometric shape indicates that.

The important thing is the safety of people, as it is an area that knows a lot of earthquakes, and the building is very old.

Yay! 🤗
