DIY - How To Make A Bishop's Bread At Home & Use Your Homegrown Walnuts

in GEMS4 years ago

One of the advantages of living at the countryside is that you can grow your own food. It is a possibility and a choice as not everyone is doing that. Growing fruits, vegetables, having livestock means hard work and sometimes it's a 24/7 job, especially with livestock. No vacations, no holidays. Animals don't have holidays or vacations, for them every day is the same and they need care every day.

Grow Your Own Food

However, there are things you get without much work and one of those things is walnuts. Once you plant a walnut, you can get a tree that in a few years can get you fruits. There's work with it as you need to clean the fallen leaves if it's in the courtyard.

We have a big walnut tree in the front courtyard, planted by my granddad some forty years ago, that is giving us plenty of walnuts almost every year. Sometimes we get only the leaves as if the tree is flowering and it comes frost, the crops is compromised, but that don't happen often. Last year we had almost no walnuts but the year before that was exceptional, so I still have plenty.

DIY - Make Your Own Bishop's Bread

Bishop's bread is mostly made at Christmas-time but it's not an exclusive sweets to be limited for Christmas. I like it as the variations you can create is endless if you have imagination, it's easy to make, ready in no time and delicious too. If there are guests coming, you can never go wrong with a good old bishop's pie.

For this one I used our homegrown walnuts and free range eggs we got from a neighbor, from homegrown chickens.

My oven is an old one, so baking time I had may not match yours but you can see how it goes and adjust baking time accordingly. Allow to cool before serving.

It's easy to make and delicious, you won't regret it.

Suggestions

Initially I was planning to make it with walnuts and raisins, as I really ♥️ raisins but forgot I used what I have earlier, so I had to use poppy seeds, which is also ok. Actually every combination is ok.

You can use:

  • Turkish delight,
  • nuts,
  • cashew,
  • grated coconut,
  • dried fruits etc.
