Keyboard Nostalgia Story

in GEMS4 years ago

The title probably looks strange...but ... ufff...today in the morning I had an issue with the keyboard for my main PC. Yes, big and very old keyboard, over 30 years old, very used and dirty as you can see 😎

For about a couple of days now, I've noticed that I miss some letters if I type something. Come on, if I type fast this happens ... well, then I realized that the keyboard no longer holds the letters y, x, c, b, n.

Well, I'll change it, after all, it's time. I liked typing with it because it had big keys, and when my eyes got worse over the years, I changed computers but I always left the keyboard. An old classic, Keytronic. I have one Genius keyboard at home, a few years old, still unused.

And I disconnect the old one from the PS/2 input and give a new one that has USB. And shit .... it doesn't work at all ... any key I press the cursor dances on the screen ... and I can't type. I turn off the computer and put the old one back ... hm ...

I go google and the first advice I found was to try to find a PS/2 to USB adapter and use it ... I call a friend who deals with hardware and he lends me three adapters ...

Here, I connect the new keyboard to the adapter and then to the PS/2 input on the computer. I turn on the computer and the light on the keyboard lights up, the windows7 login window appears, I want to type in the password and ... horror ... Error! Password incorrect! WTF!

I only wanted to type the first character of the password, but an error! How do I even log on to a computer with a new keyboard? Mission impossible...

I got a little nervous ... I mean what it's now, replacing the keyboard is a trivial matter ... maybe the Genius keyboard is something broken? I borrow one HP keyboard from my son and plug it into the adapter. I restart the computer and do the same again. Error, wrong password... I became even more nervous ... I've been doing this for two hours ...

I borrow another keyboard - Logitech, I connect it to the adapter and the same ... it doesn't help ... there is no problem in the keyboards ...

I turn off the computer again, disconnect the Logitech keyboard, put the old keyboard back on, turn on the computer, sign up nicely and google for help, and read some weird stories like mine ... hm ... it's not good ...

I read from desperate users who are also do the same and burned the motherboard because PS/2 is directly connected to the motherboard and works differently than USB and newer motherboards can be a problem ... shit ... so what did I get involved in?

I almost called a colleague at work who has the hardware in his little finger to help me with this, but I found some solution before that. Let's try this again.

Basically, I had to go into the computer Bios and turn off /block/disable the PS/2 inputs for the keyboard and mouse. Save the status and turn off the computer. Disconnect the old keyboard, connect the new one to the USB port, and restart.

I get to the Windows entry menu and Cheers! Thanks god, it finally works! I was able to enter my password and log in.

I've been doing this for over three hours ... too much ... I don't touch anymore ... when it's working ... I need a beer 😎 🍺 🍻!

You really deserved a beer or a few on this one.
I never had an old keyboard which managed to survive even a few years.
Thankfully for some reason my laptop keyboard lasts longer.

Well, that's I called nostalgia, robust and works for a few decades. Agree, few beers 😎 🍺 🍻

the keyboard in the center of the three i did not like that out i popt out the two side strips so i wouldnt be clicking them i ended up changing keyboards quick any way i have a few people tossed out :D lil cleaning and most worked just fine !

That's HP keyboard...I don't like it, too😎

im using a lenovo right now but theres another low profile rounded edges feels better on my hands but i need to replace the wire again pulled it too many times Lol this one has media player buttons for music movies not that i use it much but its nice after removing the internet click to go back and forward buttons :D

never thought changing keyboard can last for few hours, but when gremlins interfere and something simple goes wrong, it really goes wrong :D

I didn't think of that either but as you say when gremlins are in a game a lot is possible 😎

Yay!
