The Traditional Way of Harrowing or Plowing The Land

Hello everyone! How are you? Well, as for me I'm thankful to God that I'm feeling good right now. I'm completely healed from the fever and recovered my strength. Thanks for all your prayers. My dear hive friends, for today's blog I would like to share with you how farmers in the Philippines prepared their fields before planting. The very traditional way or practiced by the farmers.

Yesterday when I was walking around near the house to breathe fresh air, Ive seen my Auntie preparing her field ready for the next planting season. Before this field was planted with corn and camote or sweet potato. And now is the right time to prepare the field, so that when the rain comes she can sow the corn seeds right away.

How to Prepare the Field for planting.

After my aunt harvested the corn and camote or sweet potato, she pulled out the weeds by using bolo. When all weeds were pulled out she hired a farm worker to plow the field. Since a tractor or machine is not available in our place, the farm worker used a plow run or manipulated by a carabao and controlled by a man. The carabao will walk straight and pull the plow and be guided by the farm worker. This will be done repeatedly until the whole farm will finish plowing or harrowing depending on the types of crops to be planted by the farmers. This activity was the usual practice done by all farmers in our place. They are using a manually operated plow run or operated by the carabao.

All About Carabao

Carabao is our Country's National animal. Only a few people eat this kind of animal. There are only selected provinces that slaughtered carabao and used their meat for food, especially during special occasions like weddings and baptisms. Others used the carabao's skin in manufacturing bags and shoes. Here in Cebu, few people eat carabao meat. Most farmers don't eat carabao too because they considered this animal their best friend. Best friends in the sense that this will help them in many ways, specifically in farming. They used carabao in carrying their harvest or transporting their heavy loads. That's how important carabao is to the life of a man.
