The Cautious Jester

in Proof of Brain3 years ago (edited)

Have you ever said some really stupid shit that you later regret because you think you've made yourself look foolish? I'm pretty sure everyone has.

If you feel like you haven't, go wild in the comments below. Creativity will be rewarded?

I've dished out my own fair share of dumb nonsense in the past and present, and it'll happen again in the future, maybe even by the time I've finished this post.

The trick is to limit the number of times you come across as foolish or to be wise enough to get ahead of it or to react in a way to defuse the forthcoming ridicule. We can't all have a personal assistant who proofs the contents of our interactions, we have to be conscious of what we share to some degree.

There is no tutorial or wikihow page for this (brb)... alright, surprise surprise, maybe there is a wikihow page, but for the most part, it's going to come down to experience. This experience could be gained personally or through observation of another interaction.

Lessons are to be learned from the reflection of our own idiocy, don't try too hard. ~Lameio AD:1234

OK, enough of the preachy self-help bollocks.

I started to write this a few days ago but today I've stumbled onto an interesting post by an account called @proofoflame which has pushed me further towards finishing this off.

My own personal efforts to prevent myself from dipping the pen in the stupid ink here on the blockchain are fairly straightforward.

I try not to respond to people later in the day.

On the rare chance that I do, it'll usually be an attempt at a humorous response or a brief comment to say that I've seen something. Minimal effort.

I'm fairly conscious of what I publish for the world to see and I prefer to interact when I'm on the ball. Foolishness often occurs when energy is low (years of working in the construction industry have further confirmed this for me).

pobdivider.png

In terms of transparency here on the blockchain, we can't be any more naked unless we're sitting with our knobs out (or lady bits, I'm not excluding the women of the block) writing our content.

Let's open up a dialogue for "when is the level of transparency too much".

I was speaking with @penderis the other day about a recent situation here on POB and he raised a good point about how there could be elements of control and alienation when it comes to sharing information for everyone to see. He mentioned the words "POB" and "jungle justice" in the same sentence, which I think is apt.

Jungle justice or mob justice is a form of public extrajudicial killings in Sub-Saharan Africa, most notably Nigeria and Cameroon, where an alleged criminal is humiliated, beaten or summarily executed by a crowd or vigilantes.
Pulled from Wikipedia

Yes, it is important to realise that we're all very open to criticism, scrutiny, and possibly offense while interacting and sharing ourselves here on the blockchain, but there is a line that's crossable and we should be aware of that when pointing out someone's behavior. This could lead to hostility and toxicity; especially if it involves the backing of multiple accounts in the way of a "social mob".

pobdivider.png

I'm not one to shy away from "exposing" behaviors that I personally find troubling, but even by doing this, I may be portraying myself as an instigator or as someone trying to rally people towards my point of view.

I'd be lying if I said I didn't want people to view it how I do and that is about as self-centered as it gets.

The only response to myself here is that I never intend for my actions to be personal attacks on anyone, I just try to say it how I see it and I am always open to being proven wrong. I also try my best to reflect on my actions and seek out the point of view of others who may see it differently.

If I call someone out, it's more often than not because I have the success of the platform on my mind. I'm heavily invested here and seeing this place grow in a healthy manner is what I'd like to see happen. I just need to be cautious about how others absorb such information.

Alright, defending myself from myself over with. That was some pretty liberal shit, I know.

I'd also like to point out the content produced by these authors over the past couple of days which have really helped with my own self-reflection and the understanding of how I would like to be viewed here in the community.

This is all food for thought and I think it's something we'll tackle constantly here in the Proof Of Brain community. I just hope that we can refrain from the highly toxic elements of this and we can all hold ourselves accountable for what we share.

Don't be afraid to voice your opinion, just be prepared to swallow your pride if you wind up being a massive cunt.

Update hopefully tomorrow.

Don't forget to write your post for this week's POB Word of the Week!

There is 525 POB (liquid) up for grabs. That's about 500 HIVE at today's current price.

Mob justice is scary and often gets out of hand. Too many such videos on 'theync'. I don't think there's anything wrong if the facts are laid out openly and the accused has a chance to give their side of the story before action's taken (if any).

Basically, it's punishing the action and not the person so that lessons get reinforced. Anyway, that's my thoughts on the incident(s) i think you're referring to.

Posted via proofofbrain.io

For sure, it's not a good path to be on, always ends in an upset.

I don't think there's anything wrong if the facts are laid out openly and the accused has a chance to give their side of the story before action's taken (if any).

I like to think so. There is no real reason for anybody to take anything personally if the facts have validity and there is logic to them being shared. It's never as simple as that though, lol.

Once, a friend of mine said to me:

"-The distance from the brain to the mouth is too short to put a filter"

Posted via proofofbrain.io

I like it. We may need an adaptation for socialising on the interwebs... something about the "send button", rationalisation, and being "cancelled". lol.

Posted via proofofbrain.io

"be prepared to swallow your pride if you wind up being a massive cunt"

Yes! - sounds like something I would say myself...

But why are you looking up that jester's skirt?

But why are you looking up that jester's skirt?

Steady, the guys wearing pantaloons. No upskirts were attempted in the making of this post.

This is social media! If you are putting yourself out in the open, you have to be ready for the good or the bad that comes with it. The major difference between Hive & FB is that on Hive, your reputation is tied to your future rewards and finances. So most people tend to behave in a certain way that is not detrimental to the community or themselves. If the platform is giving you money in return for adding value, they can take it when you behave like an asshole.

But at the same time, you need to make sure that what you say has consequences and it can hurt the culture of the place. At the same time, the reality is that you cannot make everyone happy. So do whatever you gotta do and have clear intentions. Learn, evolve, and grow by making mistakes!!!! At least that's what I do.

I also try to stay away from negativity and controversy but sometimes you are dragged into it without your permission. Handling such a situation is an art in itself and it makes you stronger.

Posted via proofofbrain.io

Almost lost your comment, lol. They're starting to get buried, and I do spend the time on them daily.

Reputation is everything and something that is built over time. People don't take it lightly when you start to toy with that and it can get nasty. As I say, there is a line to be crossed, or not.

I also try to stay away from negativity and controversy but sometimes you are dragged into it without your permission. Handling such a situation is an art in itself and it makes you stronger.

It's usually for the best but there are times when something should be said. It's not always easy to know when that is. Definitely an art.

Posted via proofofbrain.io

That's right @calumam, a person has to say what he has to say. Only a true artist can do that! It takes a lot of courage and that is not everyone's cup of tea.

Even I have boundaries and if someone crosses them, I raise my voice too. Sometimes, silence is not an option anymore.

Posted via proofofbrain.io

I try and embrace my massive (inner) cunt with loving intentions and vigorously.

I certainly fall into some of these categories. Experience is king, though. Sometimes it seems as if you really need to go through the pain for the sake of learning. The better option, I've found, is to learn from the mistakes of others. It seems a callous method, but it's a better option for the individual in a way.

Posted via proofofbrain.io

The better option, I've found, is to learn from the mistakes of others.

I used to read that all the time when I went through my self-help obsessive phase of life, lol. Always some rich guy telling you that you shouldn't make mistakes, just watch others make them and avoid them yourself. Great in theory but the opportunity doesn't always present itself.

Posted via proofofbrain.io

Yeah, perhaps it a safer vs. better option. I also feel it's a tad selfish. You're waiting on someone else to screw up so you can learn from it. It's actually a hallmark of the power production industry. When I'm writing work packages, I'm required to include "lessons learned". Lessons Learned are performance events (a bad thing) that occur in the industry that applies to the work you're preparing.

In nuclear power, we're required to discuss ways an error can occur and how we would resolve them during work performance. I wonder what kind of world we would live in if each of us did something similar daily.

Posted via proofofbrain.io

we're required to discuss ways an error can occur and how we would resolve them during work performance

This sounds like a good idea for a contest. It would be cool to see that applied to a variety of topics as well (psychology, economy, technology, all come to mind).

Posted via proofofbrain.io

The end result is an enhanced awareness of your surroundings and reduced stress (in many cases). We force ourselves to admit we're fallible and consider most behaviors that would contribute to an error in maintenance. It even includes how we speak to each other.

It isn't foolproof, though. However, it does lead to reduced errors in the field. By implementing this across the industry, we're better able to understand the cause of errors in the workplace.

I have to admit. I never thought to consider this approach for a contest. It's a great idea.

Posted via proofofbrain.io

It is definitely transferrable to many walks of life and I can see how it is a good practice to undertake.

Well, if you want to develop the idea into a contest, I'll support it 100%. I'll front some POB to the prize pool for you to make it more appealing (most contests crash and burn if they don't have a decent prize pool). Just ping me a comment or drop me a message on discord if you want to expand the idea further and go for it.

Posted via proofofbrain.io

you've piked up the most descriptive image for your post "the fool".
the fool is always walking around doing none sense and messing up things , causing trouble he's not aware of.
because that's what a fool does.
there's no place for fools on POB . cuz fool has no brainers.

I'm not one to shy away from "exposing" behaviors that I personally find troubling

100% @calumam

Posted via proofofbrain.io

Funnily enough, the jester isn't necessarily the "fool" in the sense that I have put across. The jester is the one who points out the foolishness of others for the king to see (the foolish portrayal of himself as an entertainer is a front). The king in this instance being the platform, and the cautiousness being needed to not land oneself with the name of midwit.

got to thank @lucylin for the reference, from this video here (great to rewatch after the recent goings on)

'Tis a tough job, but someone has to do it...

I think that it could not be more direct and precise ... you can fully describe what could have happened or what will happen in the future ... My own criteria first of all and recognize when I am a complete idiot ... I love all the definition!

Posted via proofofbrain.io

It's a learning process, none of us fully know the effects that some actions will have. They can mutate into something else entirely if they are gone unchecked. It's always important to hear multiple points of view.

Posted via proofofbrain.io

I'm heavily invested here and seeing this place grow in a healthy manner is what I'd like to see happen.

A good manner will give a good response too. However, the response has sometimes been in the form of harsh criticism. Criticism is part of the improvement.

Posted via proofofbrain.io

I see, what you mean.

In RL I like to keep my image as the jester, so people don't take me too serious. But I have no idea, how to do that in the comment section of a random post on POB. So I often end up seeming way too serious.

Posted via proofofbrain.io

Hm, I get that, and sometimes you do but I don't necessarily think it's a bad thing. I am the same. Just got to remember that it isn't really all that serious and it's healthy to have a laugh and joke sometimes. Peoples personalities come out over time, it's not something you can judge off of one singular piece of content, and if you do that, you're being foolish anyway, lol.

Posted via proofofbrain.io

Several times I said stupid things and I regretted it bitterly because I felt like an idiot ... but as I say it is living and learning.

regretted it bitterly because I felt like an idiot

For sure, you've just got to swallow that and take it as a learning opportunity, wasting brainpower on regrets is not worth it.

Posted via proofofbrain.io

It's later on in the day and I was construction'ing all day. I was here. I read. I say no more.

Posted via proofofbrain.io

Cheers for stopping by bud. Must have been a heavy week?

Posted via proofofbrain.io

Overvalued nonsense.

Posted via proofofbrain.io

Ah, sorry to hear that. I would appreciate the feedback about what is nonsensical about it. I felt like it was well linked together with foolishness and transparency. Not disagreeing that the rewards are high and overvalued, they are.

It pisses me off in general that all of the top payout posts are for onboarding, I understand the need for onboarding, but everything has this superficial underlying sense of expected growth that I am starting to resent the stench of.

At least its not about Doge, I came on proof of brain to avoid downvoting everyone in my feed on peakd.

everything has this superficial underlying sense of expected growth

I get that. First to admit that I share posts that usually have some kind of underlying bigger picture to them and lead towards long-term thinking. Definitely, something I'll keep in mind, so cheers for the reply.

Posted via proofofbrain.io

I have this interesting habit of upvoting comments on posts I downvoted if the author is willing to debate the issues in question further but I don't want to spam you up too much since we just met.
