Building and Nurturing the Very SMALL Hive Account: Don't Leave Spare Change on the Table!

One of the things we hear somewhat often on Hive and in her many sub-communities is the lament of newcomers and smaller accounts that they don't feel like they are "making progress." There is disappointment; even disillusionment.

"But I thought it was going to be more __________!"

Fill in the blank of your choice...

Beware Those Expectations!

I can certainly appreciate the sentiment!

If you come to Hive and start with nothing, it takes a lot of effort and patience to get somewhere.

Of course, one of the things we must be mindful of is expectations, and specifically what is realistic and actually constitutes "progress." As I've stated before, Mr. Beast didn't get 107 million followers on YouTube by posting a couple of bland videos and expection millions.

My experience has been that in order to get somewhere, one of the things you have to completely eliminate from your vocabulary is the idea that something is "not enough to bother with."

It's a bit like saying you "can't be bothered" with the spare change (coins) in your pocket because they don't amount to anything... you can't even buy a cup of coffee or a pack of gum with them, anymore!

And yet — as I have also written a number of times before — if you throw your loose change into a jar every night and just leave it there for five years... chances are you'll have enough for a plane ticket to a nice vacation! Worthwhile, now?

Here on Hive, there is "loose change" to be found in many different places.

For me, most of the more significant ones come from stacking/collecting/trading Hive-Engine tokens. A lot of Hive users — even well-seasoned users — never even look at their Hive-Engine wallets.

How can I tell? Well, like most things Hive, everything is available to see via a block explorer... and a totally random set of "tribal tokens" in totally random amounts tells a story of its own!

It's one of those things that — for many users — might sound like it is "just not worthwhile," but it's amazing just how much little tiny "drips" add up to, especially over time.

The Importance of "Early" in Compunding

Many people understand the magic of compound interest, and how it can be used to build a fortune, if you just give it enough time.

Consider just this: If I were to put 100 HBD into Hive savings now and wait 10 years, at the current HBD savings rate of 20%, I'd have 727 HBD in 10 years from today. If instead I waited till next year to make that first 100 HBD deposit, in 10 years from today I would only have 596 HBD... or more than my orignal investment LESS than with an extra year!

So it is, with all that "loose change" that drips into your Hive-Engine wallet, if you use tags that are rewarded by various Hive communities.

Even if you pick specific community tokens to focus on, even just staking whatever small amounts you earn on a regular basis will gradually grow your curation rewards... and some day it will likely amount to something.

So don't leave spare change on the table!

That's a great perspective to have as a newcomer, expectations are quite high and think that they'll hit it from day one. That's not how it works, that's not how life works. You have to think long term while keeping consideration of everything. A great read!

I love that blep photograph. ^_^
