The Reality During & After the Elections

in Proof of Brain2 years ago

The common man is holding his breath waiting for the announcement of the next regime after the recent general elections and I am just hoping that whomever the rot of Westernized democracy points as our next punisher, doesn't allow this feigned sovereignty sink into post-election violence.

Before my citizenship lies my motherhood and humanity.

And I am sure the low voter turnout has already sent a message to these political warlords but I also have an understanding that they don't take such as signs and the possibility of there being the loss of lives is there. I mean, it is already happening but because this time majority of the youth they've used in the past are recanting so they have acquired a taste of guns for hire.

I feel like as a country that has a long way to decolonise, we are still aping foreign cultures.

My ancestors would be pissed I am sure, they resolved their differences like warriors, not like cowards. And sadly my people are diluting that with every hit that takes life for leadership yet they believed that such tasks came with honour and accountability. I wonder what they are doing about the spirit of the man who began all this chaos.

And to think that I once worshipped him, sigh.

If this nation didn't find itself with the con that was the first President of Kenya, we would be doing better than we are as we are made of a resourceful community but the British had better ideas after seeing they couldn't subdue the Mau Mau rebellion.

They wanted a piece of the fertile highlands and a piece of what has now become a hub for the East African countries and so they collaborated with the first greedy man who could form a few English sentences and gave my forefathers a show of his arrest before they handed him the presidency in 1963.

This was achieved after he silenced a few bold men and women who knew who he was and what he had done.

Since then, we have enjoyed the drama that comes with elections after every five years but there are times we have almost annihilated each other -nothing close to the Rwandan genocide in 1994 but we have also outdone ourselves- over who has the deepest pockets, the larger following and yes they have to be from our respective tribes as that's the only time we stop being Kenyans and became a village with close to 50M in the population who speak more than 50 different mother tongues.

I find us hard to believe sometimes. Sighs!

And because 2017 left unattended wounds, the fear of what could go wrong is there as the reality of hiked food prices. Farmers might have retreated to their farms to keep their produce safe as food destruction is among the ways we naively utilize during these times. Imagine that!

Though I haven't heard or seen this kinda lunacy sprouting even in slums this time yet, I have come to understand how crippling the idea of the past being revisited is. And I would rather bear the agony of not having enough food than that of not having peace.

It seems that the people in power (and all too often also the rest of us) forget that they are a small and weird minority and not the country, not the people. The people are the craftsmen, the mothers, the beggars and the farmers. It's the combined mass of people and politicians are a very small part of that. The only thing special about them is their ability to destroy thing on a major level, and their lack of realisation that they just are servants of the people which they only full-fill by stepping back from their own vanity and creating the frame for all those fruitful things that grow out of a people. I do vote at every election, but I always distrust those who want to get up in front of the power.

Oh yes. Who wants to do those jobs?! They must have a serious sadistic streak in them, they cause such anguish without compunction.

I might be wrong but I feel like the darkest side of colonization is how most -in this case 'most' comprises mostly of men who are past their early fifties- politicians see their leadership status as something more of a pathway to power and they absolutely love the idea of wielding authoritativeness in a dehumanising way...

I hate lining up to vote only to have the deep state go to unimaginable lengths to rig a democratic vote. Why would I bother myself?

I just quickly looked up Kenya's history, in 1963 and today. It looks neck and neck between two establishment politicians to me. Seems the PTB like to keep you as evenly divided as they keep us over here in the US. It makes no difference which of these two wins, the people will likely continue to lose. That's what I see from a few minutes of looking. What do you see today?

It is a game for them and it has cost my people their lives. Today the country is divided into two... A yellowed zone that is dominated by two tribes in control of the votes and a blued one for the rest of the minority. I am not sure if this division will hold off another post elections violence season but I hope it does as the common man is the one who loses every damn time.

I'm sorry to hear this. Do you feel the tension could tip over into violence between these two camps?

We keep losing because we are no more than their slaves, in mind, body and soul. Until we aren't.

How are things over there now? Let's hope for peace. People need to learn that politicians are neither worth killing or dying for

Relatively calm. I am glad to see that we are fighting the urge to fight amongst ourselves but the tension is still high in places as some politicians have decided it is better to shoot their opponents point blank than bother settling it through the ballot box.

I hope so 🤞

Really sad to hear about all these. I hope things don't go as bad as you fear. In the election held in 2015 in Nigeria it also seemed like all hell was going to break lose after the elections but luckily for us it didn't. The incumbent President saved the day and accepted defeat very easily or else things would have most probably exploded. I hope it goes like that too for you guys.

What you said about Jomo Kenyatta I'll like to know if you have any links or articles you can point me to so I can read about this betrayal of his people you mentioned.

I'll gather up what I can and make a post out of it. I am currently relearning what I thought was the history of my beloved country.

Nigeria has tried to hold it together considering y'all surpass us with population ethnic circles and worse, militia activities. I believe if your country was ours, we would have had a genocide already.

Oh, Nigeria have had genocides. From 1966-1970. There was a civil war from 1967-1970 too. Also on so many occasions smaller scale genocides have been happening from then till this day, the more aggressive Northeners who are Islamic are the usual aggressors. The death toll of these genocides is even more than that of Rwanda but like you said the population is more here so it would take more deaths to get close to wiping out a major ethnic group here.

Honestly, I didn't of your bloody history. I should read that... The Rwandan one left a bad taste in my mouth. I'll never understand why we kill each other in this manner!

I wish people(the world over) would understand that fighting over politics is nonsensical. So sad to read your post.
