Do you bring your own beverage supplies to hotels?

You know, I really love staying in hotels. It's just one of those things that I love to do - I do it a bit, professionally, I travel probably 8 x 1 night of the year, and my wife and I travel probably 6 times a year. Often those trips are not long, and even just one night often makes us feel good. Last week, this was the room we were offered. It was at the Best Western Apollo in Newcastle, Australia. We've actually been to this hotel LOTS. It is one of our favourites because when we visit, we like to go to the cinema or have a meal out - and it's in walking distance.

And - speaking of hotels, one of the things that I always check out, are the coffee making facilities. This one at the Best Western is pretty standard, cheap electric jug and a box of mostly teas. This coffee isn't too bad, they have the satchets of Moconno, which is fine by me. It's the only instant coffee I'd consider. They have both caffinated and decaf. Now - we didn't drink all the decaf, but we pinched the ones we didn't drink.

Now - from the photo above, you might wonder why there is a blank spot in the box. Simple: it had two packs of two biscuits. I entered the room, dumped my bag, then ate them. They're the familiar ones I always greedily gobble; they're not great, but they're not terrible. How's that for an endorsement?

In total, this is what the coffee making facilities look like - it's not a kitchenette, which is my preference in a hotel - but it's not a bad coffee making station. Behind the little cupbaord door is a small fridge - keeps the milk cold. Great!

But - we need to get to my secret weapon. When we travel, we don't put any reliance on any hotel when it comes to beverages! To that end, I always bring my own cup - the reason is its size. You've seen this big red cup in the community before; it's at least twice the size of the mugs they leave you in the room. It's essential. We also bring a jar of our own coffee - while we're lucky to get the Moconno satchets here, that's not always the case! We also bring our own milk - I dunno, the small little milks they provide would be enough for 1 or 2 cups or coffee. But, I'm a fan of a milky beverage, so we always pick up a bottle. This is a 1 litre bottle, and that did us - we didn't get through it, but, what you can't see, is that we also bring a long-life milk, as a 'just-in-case'. I can't drink black coffee, so it's better to have the back-up plan.

So with coffee in hand, and a packet of pikelets to eat - I settled myself onto the balcony and enjoyed the bliss. I had left my wife at the shopping centre; and, it would be hours, and a few cups of coffee, before she'd ring me to say, 'Can you come pick me up?'.

Would love to hear from the community, how do you approach hotel visits? Do you bring your own supplies, or take the risk that what you get will do you for your stay? Would love to hear international experiences of how you approach this tricky question!

I will usually go out and hunt down a good coffee shop and have one from them.

Hi Timoty,
When I lived in the Philippines, I would sometimes take small packets of my own coffee and a small French press I had with me. At the time I used to have milk with my coffee, so I would also purchase a long-life UHT milk (the popular milk in the Philippines).

I also avoid using mini bar items at hotel, and tend to purchase snacks form the closest corner shops or supermarkets. The mark up on hotel items are just not worth it. Maybe it's because I've worked in the hotel industry for so long, that I just don't want to fall victim to any of it:)

I don't think I've ever brought my own coffee supplies to any of the hotels that we've stayed at but it's a smart idea. A lot of the hotels we stay at don't even have a refrigerator so bringing milk would be out of the question hahaha.

Heya Leaky20;
We've been bringing our own supplies for years, but at every hotel we've ever stayed at, there's always been a mini-fridge. Perhaps its an Australian thing. Where abouts are you from>

I'm from Canada and most places have mini fridges in the hotels. I'm currently in France now though and less hotels seem to have them here. I suspect it's to do with energy conservation and climate change because France seems to be a leader in that regard.

How many stars would you give to hotels that leave you products to make your own coffee? I would give an extra star for the detail :D

Omg after staying in a quarantine hotel on Melbourne in June 2020 I never want to stay in one again... The PTSD is real!!!!
