One day I decided to move into the room I had built on a piece of land in the courtyard of my mother's house.

Un buen día decidí mudarme a la habitación que había construido, en una porción de terreno, del patio de la la casa de mi madre.

The room was not completely finished, the main door and two windows were missing. However, having my own room
and enjoy more privacy couldn't wait any longer.

La habitación no estaba terminada en su totalidad, faltaba instalar la puerta principal y dos ventanas. Sin embargo, tener mi habitación propia
y gozar de mayor privacidad no podía esperar más.

Install curtains on the front door and on each of the windows.

I quickly moved all my clothes into the room, my small bed, a fan, which I placed on a bedside table, and an almanac or calendar, which I hung on the wall as decoration, near my bed.

Trasladé rápidamente toda mi ropa a la habitación, mi pequeña cama, un ventilador que coloque sobre una mesita de noche, y un almanaque o calendario, que colgué en la pared como decoración, cerca a mi cama.

Every night, when the door to the courtyard of the main house was closed and I turned off the light in my room, darkness took over the whole place and the courtyard became silent.

Todas las noches, cuando la puerta que daba al patio, de la casa principal, se cerraba, y yo apagaba la luz de mi habitación, la oscuridad se apoderaba de todo el lugar y el patio quedaba en silencio.

One night, after having read a little, as I always used to do, I turned off all the lights and went to sleep.

Una noche, luego de haber leído un poco, como siempre acostumbraba, apague todas las luces y me dispuse a dormir.

I lay down on the bed, and when I had scarcely closed my eyes, to fall asleep, a mysterious whisper interrupted the silence.

Me acosté en la cama, y cuando a penas había cerrado los ojos, para conciliar el sueño, un misterioso susurro interrumpió el silencio.

I clearly heard someone whispering my name,

I got up quickly, turned on the light, and went to the window, drew the curtain, and believing that the mysterious whispering was coming from outside the room, I shouted into the darkness several times Who's there? Who's there? Who's there? Who's there? No one answered, no noise was heard, the silence was sepulchral.

Me levante rápidamente, prendí la luz, y me dirigí a la ventana, corrí la cortina, y creyendo que el misterioso susurro provenía de afuera de la habitación, grite hacia la oscuridad varias veces ¿Quien está ahí? ¿Quien es? ¿Quien está ahí? ¿Quien es? Nadie respondió, no se escuchaba ningún ruido, el silencio fue sepulcral.

Something disturbed, I turned off the light again, went back to bed and tried to fall asleep again. Not even five seconds had passed when that disturbing whisper was heard again.

Algo perturbado, volví a apagar la luz, regrese a la cama y trate nuevamente de conciliar el sueño. No habían transcurrido ni cinco segundos cuando se dejó oír nuevamente aquel inquietante susurro,

Invaded by fear, I got up again, but this time at a greater speed, and turned on the light, went to the window and drew the curtain. With nearly half my body leaning out of the window, and trying to open my eyes much wider, to try to see better, I let out a shuddering cry into the darkness Who is there? Who is it? Who is there?

Invadido por el miedo, me levanté nuevamente, pero esta vez a mayor velocidad, y encendí la luz, me dirigí a la ventana y corrí la cortina. Con casi la mitad de mi cuerpo inclinado hacia afuera de la ventana, e intentando abrir mucho más mis ojos, para tratar de ver mejor, lancé un grito estremecedor a la oscuridad ¿Quien anda ahí? ¿Quién es? ¿Quien está ahí?

There was no response this time either. There was no sound, it was as if the darkness had allied itself to the silence to make me more afraid.

Está vez tampoco hubo respuesta. No se escuchaba nada, era como si la oscuridad se había aliado al silencio para atemorizarme mas.

No one in the main house seemed to have heard me scream, not even the neighbors, who showed signs of having heard those questioning cries full of fear.

Nadie de la casa principal parecía haberme oído gritar, ni siquiera los vecinos, daban muestras de haber escuchado aquellos interrogantes gritos cargados de temor.

I could not let myself be defeated by the situation, I sought strength from where I did not have it, I filled myself with courage and decided to pay more attention to that strange and distressing call.

No podía dejarme vencer por la situación, busqué fuerzas de donde no tenia, me llene de valor y decidí prestar más atención a aquel extraño y angustiante llamado.

I turned off the light for the third time, lay down slowly in bed and put my ear to the ground to find out what was going on. The whispering was heard again,

Apague la luz por tercera vez, me acosté lentamente en la cama y puse mi oído alerta para descifrar que estaba pasando. El susurro se dejó escuchar otra vez,

The intrigue became greater than the fear and
I slowly got out of bed, walked slowly until I reached the light switch.

La intriga se hizo mayor que el temor y me levanté poco a poco de la cama, caminé despacio hasta alcanzar el interruptor de la luz.

The room lit up, and to my surprise, I saw nothing there but my bed, the fan spinning and the almanac hanging on the wall.
I thought I was being attacked by some kind of invisible entity.

La habitación se ilumino, y para mi sorpresa, no veía allí más que mi cama, el ventilador girando y el almanaque colgado en la pared.
Pense que estaba siendo atacado por una especie de ente invisible.

By now I was convinced that whatever it was, it wasn't outside, it was there, inside my room.

Ya a estas alturas estaba convencido de que, fuera lo que fuera, aquello no estaba afuera, sino que estaba allí, dentro de mi habitación.

This time I chose not to turn off the light, and I slowly went back to bed.
I lay still in bed, staring at the ceiling.

Esta vez opté por no apagar la luz, y me volví a acostar lentamente.
Me quede inmóvil en la cama con la mirada fija en el techo.

Almost instantly the whispering was heard once again. Each time I heard that whisper closer to me, with sudden changes in intensity.

Casi instantáneamente el susurro se dejó escuchar una vez mas. Cada vez escuchaba aquel susurro más cerca de mi, con repentinos cambios de intensidad.

I stayed there without moving, for a long time, full of panic. But still, I wanted to know what I was really up against. So I sharpened my ear and focused my attention much more.

Seguí allí sin moverme, por un buen rato, lleno de pánico. Pero a pesar de todo, quería saber a qué realmente me está enfrentando. Así que acuse al máximo mi oído y concentre mucho más mi atención.

I turned around, slowly in bed, and looked around very carefully.

Me fui girando, paulatinamente en la cama, y observando todo a mi alrededor con mucho cuidado.

I looked at the wall to my left, and watched the leaves of the almanac move to the beat of the air expelled by the fan.

Detuve la vista en la pared a mi izquierda, y observé cómo se movían las hojas del almanaque, al compás de los golpes que recibían del aire expulsado por el ventilador.

I kept listening and observing all that phenomenon. Suddenly, I could not believe it, for me tranquility and stupor, I discovered what was happening, the mystery had been cleared up in my mind.

Seguí escuchando y observando todo aquel fenómeno. De pronto, no lo podía creer, para mí tranquilidad y estupor, descubrí lo que estaba sucediendo, el misterio se había aclarado en mi mente.

The fan, as it turned, emitted a sound similar to a continuous "

", and the leaves of the almanac, as they rose and fell again, pushed by the air that came in between them from the fan, emitted a second sound, similar to a continuous "

El ventilador, mientras giraba, emitía un sonido semejante a un "

___eeeee

" continuado, y las hojas del almanaque, al levantarse y volver a caer, empujadas por el aire que se colaba entre ellas proveniente del ventilador, emitian un segundo sonido, semejante a un "

___duaaaarrdoooo

" también continuado.

For some strange reason those two sounds met and united created a single sound that reached my ear, every time I went to bed, transformed into a dark whisper of my name.

Por alguna extraña razón aquellos dos sonidos se encontraban y unidos creaban un único sonido que llegaba a mi oído, cada vez que me acostaba, transformado en un susurro tenebroso de mi nombre.

I remained meditative and undaunted. Sitting in bed, for a moment that seemed eternal, I thought about how our brains and thoughts can play tricks on us and lead us into very dangerous territory.

Me quede contemplativo e impávido. Sentado en la cama, por un momento que pareció eterno, pensaba como nuestro cerebro y nuestros pensamientos pueden jugarnos malas pasadas, y llevarnos a terrenos muy peligrosos.

The fear had dissipated. I got up calmly, walked to the switch, turned off the light, and returned to my bed. I felt very tired. I closed my eyes and slept soundly.

El temor se había disipado. Me levanté calmadamente, caminé hasta el interruptor, apague la luz y regresé a mi cama. Me sentía muy cansado. Cerré mis ojos y dormí profundamente.
