Sublime Morning Memories: LOH #62 challenge

in SublimeSunday2 years ago (edited)

Waking up in the morning is a tricky thing.

My father used to make us breakfast before school every morning that I can remember. I'm sure my mom also made breakfast - but my dad is the one that stands out. Why? Because he could make a mean easy over egg with buttered toast. Why also? Because he was LOUD. EXTREMELY LOUD.

One of his favorite sayings to this day is: If I'm up? Everyone is up.

And it was oh-so-true. LOL Now, don't get me wrong! I'm a morning person. I'm actually a nightowl too. LOL I am pretty much awake and cheery 20 hours out of the day. hahahaha But when he would wake, he would literally walk around the house, banging pots and pans, slapping drawers closed, clanging cabinets shut, making random exclamations, and singing. SINGING. SO. LOUD.

I married a sleeper.

I have always been pretty protective of that wake-up time. (um, except for right now when my keyboard is clicking - but shhhhhh. That's different and he's used to it. hahahahahaha)
When my children were born, I MADE CERTAIN to preserve that silence and sweet space to welcome them into the new day. I would be awake before them - (yes, only sleeping 4 hours a day allows this to be a very simple task hahaha) and I'd sit gently on their bed, rub their backs, talk softly to them until their little bodies would roll over and smile at me.

This is one of the things that delights me most as a mom. I have always given them a sweet, relaxing beginning to their day from the time they were born. I love this. I hope they continue that for their families because I truly believe it starts each day out on the right foot.

So all the ladies of Hive are probably thinking right now,,, "Did you misread the question? What does this have to do with a favorite holiday food? hahahaha"

I was giving you the contrast first! LOL

Now let me share the memories of my mom waking up first and cooking in the kitchen.

As I said, my dad usually did this - but on occasion, my mom would wake and cook. This was usually during the holidays when she wasn't working, and had a day of cooking before her. She would wake early because she would make the most ornate holiday meals! She was, and still is, an amazing cook! Some people just have that innate skill! They don't need recipes or directions - they go by the taste and feel and scent of things.

This is how she is! Now, she's a tornado in the kitchen! You don't want to be assigned to clean up after her! hahahahaa But if you get to eat her food... mmmmm, you are just in for a treat!

On holiday mornings, she would make noise also - but it was a different kind of noise.

It was the kind of noise that would wake you up with the promise of a day of decadence. The pots and pans might have been just as loud as when my father would cook, but it didn't seem that way. It seemed that the blender was calling me to start wondering what was spinning inside. The mixer paddles would occasionally clink the glass of the bowl and alert me that a feast was coming. But - the creak of the oven door would let the most divine scent seep out. It would find me in my room and cause me to lazily roll over, untangle my legs from the warm blankets and stretch my body luxuriously, awaiting the Cinnamon Rocks.

As I said, my mom was (and still is) a very, very good cook. But these particular treats were a recipe "mishap" that ended up being better than the original. Go figure! Only she could pull this off!

One year, tiny little cinnamon croissants had been missing a certain ingredient, and what was delivered to us that day was a flaky, crispy, crunchy, buttery burst of cinnamony goodness! The recipe was a HIT and ever since, we have never had ANYTHING but that pastry for Christmas morning. We would settle in for opening presents around the tree, hot cocoa in one hand, and the other diving into the plate of "Cinnamon rocks" before they were all gone.

We were all addicted and it was a shame, because though we TRIED to have a selfless attitude during Christmas - that did NOT apply to Cinnamon Rocks! hahaha Siblings fighting over the last few cookies was common, and greed STUFFED our silly bellies until we thought we would burst. The best part was seeing my mother's satisfied expression - knowing that her gift of cooking was so fully appreciated.

I won't be with my parents or siblings this year for Christmas, and I also haven't had the opportunity to eat wheat in YEARS. But after writing this, I'm tempted to try my hand at a gluten free version of these this year, and see if I can match my mom's culinary wizardry to continue the tradition for my family.

How about you? What's your favorite holiday food?
Does it come with a special memory attached?

That is so sweet I bet they wake up happy and healthy ready to conquer anything in front of them with that love and support from you. My mom did the same and I will always and forever be a mama's boy I think most of us are when we have awesome moms like yourself doing that kind of stuff. It makes a huge difference waking up with the love and compassion of a parent. 😍

Ok the way you describe that I can smell it and taste it now YUMMMM they sound soooo good. For us we have traditionally made pumpkin pie good ole ED Smith with a fresh dollop of homemade whipping cream, not that stuff that comes in a can. The smells that Christmas brings are so special from a fresh pine tree or turkey in the oven to all of the amazing desserts that can be whipped up it is sensory overload at its finest.

Hope you have a wonderful Christmas and it is filled with joy, love and laughter.

hehehehehe they are soooooooooooo good

I just asked my mom for the recipe and she sent me to some online website
hahahahaha
i said WHAT. lol I WANT YOUR RECIPE
she's like oh ok hahahahahahahahaha

Thank you Drabs!!! :) This is my prayer over you and yours also - lots of joy love and TONS of laughter!!!!!

and yes - agree.

pine mmmmmm
turkey mmmmmm
baking desserts mmmmmmmm

you have me drooling now hahahahahahahahaahah

Oh my goodness, I was ROTFL at bits of this😆. You could have been writing about my family haha (not exactly the same, but enough similarities to make me chuckle in reminiscing). When I was little, my dad would wake up early, fetch me on the way to the kitchen and sit me up on the counter. Then he would make us some breakfast and a cup of tea. While we waited for the kettle to boil, I would stand up on the counter and jump repeatedly into his arms, and with each successful jump, he would move slightly further away, always egged on by me. It was a fine balance of courage, trust and just trying to be a badass 3-year-old 😂. Of course, he always caught me. He never let me fall. But that's my dad 😍 Then he would carry a cuppa to my mom, and I would go through with him and sit and drink my tea on their bed in the morning. As I got older and my love for morning sleep grew, my dad's early morning antics became a pain in the proverbial lol. Typically he is in bed at 8pm every night and up at 5am, singing, dancing, having the loudest conversations with the dogs and cats, literally! It has necessitated a few heart-to-hearts with him at various points in my adult life lol as I am a night owl and not so much a morning person lol. My hubby is also a sleeper...truth be told he'll admit that he is a night owl in disguise. He is just the sensible one out of us two when it comes to sleep requirements! 🤣 As for the rest, my mom always put us to bed really nicely. She would either lie down next to us or sit next to us and soothe us until we fell asleep. I do this with my two ...and regularly fall asleep next to one of them for an hour or so before getting up again. My 2 boys are very different: My eldest is a night owl and an early riser, much like you, whereas my youngest needs his sleep or he can be impossible in the mornings. He generally needs 1/2 hour at least to wake slowly and ease into his day. I really enjoyed this share from you Dreems😍. Family traditions and the love we received from our own parents are so important and have helped to shape the love we share today with our own families. !LUV !PIZZA !ALIVE

hahahahahahahaha and now you have me laughing so hard with your comment!!!!

I can SEE all of this happening
and yesssssssssssss the LOUD conversations - why so early?!?!?! LOLOLOL

i mean - i'm awake at 3 am. but i try to be SO quiet until like 8 am

even if my mom catches me online at 4am... seh's like can i call?

hahahahahahaha
i'm like MOM. its 4 am here. its dark. my family is sleeping NO YOU CANNOT CALL hahahahahahahahahahaha

love your comment here - love sharing these memories!!!

Oh, that is so funny, bless your Mom ... hehe ... YOU ABSOLUTELY CANNOT RING ME AT 4AM ROTFL....

I used to always be the one ringing my mom, as it was just easier that way for her with calls and phones etc....anyway one day she pocket dials me while I'm at work and obvs I answer and I can just hear her going about her day. So I call her back to tell her that

hey Mom, my phone rang and I saw it was you and I was so happy that you were calling me for a change hehe ...I'm feeling loved here...and then I was ...sad...because it was a pocket dial.

She was like

oh no, I'm sorry I didn't realise you felt like I didn't care enough to call. I shall definitely do some of the calling in future

... we exchange a few minutes of small talk, exchange our love and the phone goes down. I kid you not, 10 seconds later my phone rings...it's Mom!

Hey, Mom, everything ok?

I ask...

Too soon?

Came the reply.

I almost wet myself laughing😂

hahhahahaha your mom !!!! i'm telling you! hahaha she and I would have gotten along wonderfully!!!! LOLOL

You absolutely would have! 💖

hahhahahaha your mom !!!! i'm telling you! hahaha she and I would have gotten along wonderfully!!!! LOLOL

Hello @dreemsteem. What wonderful holiday food memories you shared that truly exhibits a perfect sublime Sunday. I can imagine waking up to buttery croissants coated with my favorite spice blend, sugar and cinnamon, filling the house with their exotic aroma. There's just something heavenly about it.

Appreciate you participating in the LoH contest.

hehehehe yes I always try to participate but... you know hahahaha

some weeks are easier than others LOL
but they are always fun questions and I love to join in this women's community supporting each other (and a few brave men too! LOL)

Oh, I am still laughing at your dad's way of waking up! This is so much MY MOTHER! As the mom to six boys and three girls, she had to keep on her toes. She was silent until a certain hour and then, all bets were off. That was summer, during school, she was a tornado, getting nine kids to school on time. We went to a Catholic school, so no bus, she packed us all up and dropped us off at two different schools. But, first breakfast.

The idea of those cinnamon croissants is more than appealing! I would say they are open game for a recipe! OMG! Toss me one! I am so hungry and only one of those will do!

Christmas day at your house sounds very similar!

Are you sure we aren't related? Soul sista! Soul sista! Taking you home with me. Hop on!

ROFLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL i'm laughing so hard at these comments! hahahahaha seriously hahahahahahahah cuz it seems like everyone is like YESSSSSS ME TOOOO! HAHAHAHAHA

OK - so i actually didn't have the recipe! but....I asked my mom for the recipe just the other day.. and she sent me to a website

no lie hahahaha i wanted to strangle her

i'm like NO. YOURS. I WANT YOURS. hahahahahahahahaa

she must be hoarding that recipe now - wait until I give it out to all of Hive hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

yes my soul sista - i'm hopping on and flying to you! hehehehehehe

Our holiday tradition, for Christmas started after my kids were born.

Before the kids, my brother and I would each travel from our separate homes for Christmas morning at my mom and dad's. Once the two girls were born, it became important for us to make sure the girls spent their Christmas morning in their PJ's by the fireplace, lazily opening gifts and playing with their new surprises!

My dad, ever the lover of Christmas mornings with his family decided, ok, well, it's not right to drag the little ones out of their home on Christmas Morn', so, he started a tradition of bringing a big Brunch over to our house. He'd cook it all, only do it in our house...

Later, as the girls and my own parents grew older, that morphed into Brunch, either at our house, or my brother's. We'd each bring things to make for Brunch: Big fruit Bowl, Overnight French Toast, Bagels and Cream Cheeses, etc.

To this Day, even after my parents have both passed, the Big Brunch is still a tradition. Typically at my brother's. We usually bring an overnight French toast to bake, still.

We always got carted off to one of our grandparents after gifts were opened on Christmas morning leaving our new toys behind. It made such an impression on my eldest brother that when his kids were born, he made a firm rule that Christmas day was for him and his family. He'd welcome anyone to visit but he was not dragging his kids out. He'd visit family on Boxing Day which is a holiday here.

that's why I had the similar thing... with kids, it's important to make it about family.

it really is - and to let them know that they are free to do the same with their family too!

yesssssssss hahaha it seemed like that really was something that every family had to re-establish huh??

we did the same hahahaha

occassionally we would all show up together at someone's house and do the full sleepover
THAT was fun.. chaotic fun - but fun! hehehehe

but yeah - we did the same.. time for new holiday traditions hehehe

that sounds so lovely... oh my gosh Greg. REMIND ME TO TELL YOU OF MY DREAM last night hahahahahaha

your brother rescued me!!!!!!!!!! hahahahahah from some killer LOLOL

and we don't do the overnight french toast - we do the overnight breakfast casserole and its soooooooooo freaking yummo hahahahaha

can't wait 84!!!!!!!

Oh, and it is sublime too. Only you could color your memories with rainbow 🌈 bright shade of delight. Exquisitely told. Except you’ve made a small error - WHERE’S THE RECIPE FOR THE CINNAMON ROLLS -I don’t know if I’ll forgive you. Hahaha

hahahahahahahahahahaa

so i've just mentioned it above in a few comments too LOL
but my mom tried to give me an online recipe when i asked for hers hahahaha

i'll strangle her LOL SO - I THINK the recipe is comign soon - then i'll have to make a new post hahahahaha

Hope so. LoL

Believe it or not, Fruit Cake preserved in the finest Rum,Yo ho ho ☠️ Lol!

yo ho hoooooooooo my pirate sister! hahahahahaha

and of course I be believin' it!!!! I be a pirate too hahahahahahahaha Love you!

My mom never followed recipes too, i learned to cook free hand from her. What am i saying? 90% women here don't know what recipe means. Lol. You father...(trying not to laugh) is adorable...

hahahahaha I was talking to him today - and I had him laughing so hard on the phone.

He sent me a text saying he's still walking around the house laughing his ass off LOLOLOLOLOLOL

I would melt off adorableness if i was butter... He sure is cheerful. That's where you get your bubbly personality huh? 😂

Hehehe from both my parents.

Sometimes they are grouchy too 😂😂😂😂

But lots of times we laugh hahahhaa

Oh Yummy, think I'll relish that cinnamon Croissant 😋
Merry Christmas 🎄

Merry Christmas to you too!!
Now that everyone is asking for it - I'll have to get the recipe and attempt it for myself here hahahahahaha

then a video for you all :)

Your story starts off the best, you are talking about your super spontaneous and great family, both the one you grew up with and the one you have now formed a sweet home with, I savored as soon as I saw those donuts, how divine! I want them but already!

Merry Christmas and many blessings!

untitled.gif

hehehe actually that picture was as close to what I could find online - but they are just a picture...

the ones that my mom makes are SO much prettier!!!

I will attempt to make them and then share them with all :)

merry Christmas to you my friend!!! :)

OMG what wonderful Christmas memories! And I love how you woke your children, easing them into the day. I remember "singing" my boys awake, they were reluctant risers - and let me tell you, my singing is no joy - it got them up just so I would stop!
Those cinnamon rocks sound amazing. Funny how mistakes can turn out to be a whole different kind of wonderful. Let us know if you come up with a gluten free recipe - my mom can't have wheat either, and I know she would love those.

ROFLLLLLLLLLLLLL oh no - you are the loud parent singing?!?!?! hahahahahahahahahahaha

yes - so I asked my mom recently for the recipe - so we'll see how it works! hehehehe I will be posting as soon as I can try it hehehehe

thank you for the visit and the giggle!!!!!! LOL

Do you know the song "I Will Survive" by Gloria Gayner? Imagine this "remake" at a loud and very off-key voice:

AT FIRST I WAS AFRAID
I WAS PETRIFIED
RYAN & JOSH WOULD OVERSLEEP
AND THEY WOULD MISS THEIR RIDE!

(And usually about as far as I got because they were awake and ready for me to stop, lol)

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAH CLASSIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

that is a very creative parent right there hahahahah

reading your post somehow made me remember my own chaotic family and its food traditions that we have during the holidays.

It is bittersweet as I have not seen my family in person for the past 2 years and with my mom dying three years ago know a part of our tradition dies with her.

I'm so sorry to hear that Mav! :(

but she will live on in all the recreations of those traditions!!! keep her alive and pass her memories and spirit into the next generation, my friend!

The holidays really are so special, aren't they??

Yes I am hoping to be able to do so in the future and maybe pass it on.

She lives in our hearts and memories and holidays has always been her thing

Amen! praying it to be so for you and your family!

I am going to check this out n ow. Isn't amazing and also scary and also sobering what an impact our parents have on us. Their habits shape us and influence us even into raising our own children.

hehehe yes! either we grow like them, or we grow away! heheheh but it's always fun to see how they shape us!!!

You described my dad to the letter. He would be up at 5 A.M. Sweeping the flooring tapping the dust off the broom every two minutes. Waking my mother and I up. He was always an early riser from working on a farm most of his life. Since I could remember his work day started at 3 A.M. And my favorite holiday food is either my fire roasted butter nut squash bisque I manke , or black eyed peas with collard greens and corn bread for New Years Day!

hahahahahahahaha seriously!!!!!!!!! i'm crying laughing from all the comments!!!!!!

everyone has the same story! one parent was the loud one hahahahahahahahahahahaha

oh man - that yummy bisque - i love it... and collard greens!!!!!!

squirrel! you have me salivating here hahahahahahahahah

You would get so fat if I cooked for you for a month lol. My mom hates most foods. So I do not really get to be creative in the kitchen anymore with saddens me.

aw man!!!! you need to just get in there and cook and find someone to share it with! hehehehe

cooking is a GREAT way to release those pent up emotions and also FEED people with love! hahahahahaha

you gotta find someone! heheheheheeh

Wow, fond memories of mum's cooking. Cooking us one part of mother's that I really do cherish. I hope one day my girls would be able to describe my cooking too in such an amazing way on dreemport. You got me cracked where you said I won't want to clean after her cooking but her food is out of this World. Haha, knowing that you would be in for a treat was a motivation to help clean up right? 😂

hahahahahahahahahahaahahaha right?!?!?!

i do NOT want to be in the kitchen after her.. no no no. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH

but you konw what I would do? sometimes I woudl go into the kitchen and as she was cooking - I would clean up behind her and we would talk and stuff - that was fun! hehehehe

but she would dirty dishes faster than i coudl clean them hahahaha what's wrong with that woman!!!!

and yes - bring those girls to DreemPort please!

the next generation i s waiting for them hahahahaha

I love the Memories-themed episodes. Feels like Christmas!
Thanks to @dreemsteem, God bless you dear.

hehehehe yes its right around the corner!!! :)

Hope you have a wonderful Christmas too my sweet friend!!! God bless you and your family!

so.... what was the missing ingredient?

hahahaha she never told me - and my mouth was too filled to care!

But i'm getting the recipe from her soon and will have to do a demo video! hahahaha

will that be the next video you see of me?!?!? hahahahahahahaha

luring you... luring you... LOLOLOL

enticing me into baking... not sure that is a good thing

no? hehehe maybe find ways to alter the recipe to make it healthier and use some of your dehydrated fruits in the dough too heheheheh

One of his favorite sayings to this day is: If I'm up? Everyone is up.

It's a hit! LOL. But my mom used to say: I go to bed, and everyone goes to bed too :) She was a very light sleeper. Now she's a loud sleeper )))

There were no skilled cooks in my family. The time was very harsh and not rich. Now in our family I am like your mother - the best cook)) I love to cook and look how everyone argues when they share my cookies or the last piece of the pie. When aroma of baking fill the house, it's so cozy and peaceful...

Thanks for your amazing post and sweetest memories, it's written deep from the heart <3 <3 <3
Now I feel like going to share something for #62 too 😇

Is there something you love to make the best hehehe

Oh no, you better don't ask because this is a topic I can talk for ... even. At least in my native language, LOL. Especially when I'm in stress, I cook, bake, simmer and boil. At least, the hubby and her job mates are happy about that )))

drop the link for your post here - I'll go visit for sure!!! hehehe

20211106_185720-01.jpeg

I'm indulging in this right now

Actually licking the screen.... ROFLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

hmmm these croissants look soooo yummi :-) if only there would not be these gluten troubles. I wonder, why I never had problems in former times eating all that. But Christmas without wheat? cannot imagine :-)

hehehe well - for years now, they've been manipulating the wheat genetically so that it can grow under a certain pesticide.

that pesticide is very very harmful to the beneficial bacteria in our gut lining. it kills it off, day by day

we need all those beneficial bacteria to process our food. those bacteria also make up about 70% of our immune system.

so.... hehehe

before these pesticides - wheat was wonderful! :)

now - about half the population suffers with some type of disturbance because of the GMO wheat and pollutants

(i bet you didn't expect that long answer hahahahahahaha)

but i WILL find a gluten free alternative!! :) and then i will post about it, my sweeeeeeeeeeeeeet beeeeeeeeeeebie! :)

MERRY CHRISTMAS BEEBER!!!!!!

no thats wrong ;-) I never would expect a short answer from you dear @dreemsteem ;-)
sorry for the late reply, somehow there is always so much to do.
I know this about manipulation from wheat and other plants, but sometime I think this is only something in my head.
Because. They startet to change things back in den 70s 80s .. and I have some problems with some foods only since a few years now.
Dont know.
And you get it to realy eat NO wheat? wow HEHE I'm much to greedy to do so ;-)

Do you eat sugar? If yes, I just wrote a posting about gluten free gingerbread. but its with sugar.

Hope you had a wonderful Christmas Time dear :-)

ahhhh but yes - it takes time to build up in the system.

and then after it builds up - it attacks the other systems over years. so since the time span is so long - no one ever associates their symptoms to that - because of your exact statement.

"if they changed the wheat back then - why am I only feeling it now?"

yes.... it's sinister and takes years to really break down the body to the point of no return :(

i have been gluten free for... hmmm 8 years now I think. And you can't imagine how much I miss the delicious flavor of chewy bread! I can eat GF bread and some are nice...but nothing like wheat

I'm so sad that they destroyed this for so many people. I hope one day there will be a way to rebuild our bodies so that we can maybe handle this? who can tell? i don't know... but if not - there is always heaven hehehe

i do eat sugar! I will see if my daughter wants to make us some gingerbread hahahahahaha

we really did have the best Christmas! it was so wonderful - and I have been offline for 2-3 days too - so no worries - we have to know when to step away - right?? hehehehe

love to you!!!! New Years is next! :)

Hi dear ☺ this makes sense and / but 😂 my answer about my thoughts will come via discord
Tomorrow ☺ good night

This is beautiful, in my case, my mom made all the food, and my dad will make specific dishes throughout the year, and I'm the one with the magic for the kitchen to make flour with water taste good haha, so all of us create different memories for everyone and that's great.

Those "cinnamon rocks" sound awesome, I love crunchy treats, they taste good and also entertain me haha

Hope you find the best way to recreate them in a gluten-free version :D

hehehe i'm going to wait for my mom to reliquish the recipe - and then try to recreate them for us all!!! hahahahaah
thank you for your visit :)

My story is similar in that my dad (when he was home and not on the road) would make us waffles, and they were killer. I sort of have the idea how he made them, even though I don't cook and haven't for years, and it's that Sunday morning and you could smell those waffles.
It's totally cool that you remember your dad in the kitchen though, there are a lot of people that their mothers did all the cooking. Holidays? Moms, grandmas, aunts and daughters would all be in the kitchen for 2 to 3 days. They made a super variety of things like shrimp dimp, deviled eggs, sugar cookies, fudge, and well, you get the idea hahahahaha. Now my sweet tooth is killing me and I'm hungry lol.

hehehehe yes - my mom was in the kitchen for holidays - but the day to day? that was my dad mostly hehehehe

and now i'm reading your foods there and i'm hungry too! LOLOL
