😱 Is this the end of mij photography trip to Spain?

in PhotoFeedlast year

Noooooooooo… The wors thing a photographer can overcome is happen to me! I am 1800 km from home, is this the end of my photo trip? Do I need to go back?

I spend the last view day at the Spanish north coast! Taking nice pictures of the rough coast line, it’s massive cliffs and hoping for some nice sunset and sunrise colors! I really love it here! Until I was heading for he next location!

I was walking down the cliffs tot he beach to go look for nice rock formations and a cave that I came across on the internet! It was a hard walk down but the beach was stunningly beautiful! It almost looked like Jurassic park!

It started to be low tide and the rocks on the coastline where very slippery, so I needed to pay close attention of what I was doing! In the Netherlands we don't have rocks, so it can be tricky for me! And also because the wind was quite fierce!
You guessed it, I didn't pay enough attention...!

I saw a nice rock formation with a little puddle in front of it! Nice for a long exposure picture! I put up my tripod and took my camera and my filter system out of my bag! I screwed them on my tripod and then I put it all down again! And before I knew it, my gear was all bouncing over the rocks, smashing to pieces, and my camera ended up in the puddle of salt water…!

I quickly garbed my camera out of the water and tried to dry it off, got the battery and the memory card out and I hoped that I was quickly enough before the salt water would be in my gear! I was so sad at that moment! Could this be the end of my photography trip?
I went back to my van and lay everything to dry in the sun! Hoping that the damage will be kept at a minimum!

It all happened on Sunday, tree day's ago, so every store was closed! I couldn't even buy a big bag of rice to put my gear in! So for that day I couldn't do anything so I went back to the beach! I really wanted to visit the location I wanted to photograph!

This spot is so cool! I really need to check it out again with some nice sunset ore sunrise conditions! That cave was a bit scary! I heard some small rock falling from the ceiling! I took all these pictures with my telephone!

After this I contacted some Spanish photographer friends and asked for advice! I needed a really good camera store! They sent me to the town of Gijon, that's where I still am! The owner of the camera store said immediately that my camera was written of! The salt water is literally killing for camera's! My canon 14mm maybe will survive it all! This is a prime lens without stabilization and zoom, so not many parts were water can leak in to!
But the possibility that it's going to rust in a couple of weeks is real!

For now I am waiting for the insurance company to get me the green light that they will pay the damage! I really hope so because than I could buy a new camera and can continue my trip!

And this is the spot where I am waiting it all out! Trying to do some work on the pictures that I made!

Ohh no.. that's awful. I'm glad that you gotta save your memory card though

750 are on there😅 and many beautiful sunsets to

I knew there had to be good news in there somewhere since we were seeing some great images. What a beautiful place and hope to see good news about a new camera soon!

Thank you! I hope to here from the insurance tomorrow.

my gear was all bouncing over the rocks, smashing to pieces, and my camera ended up in the puddle of salt water…!

Oh no, every photographer's nightmare! I hope the insurance will cover your loss.

The pictures are great though :)

Hi @haastrecht

I'm sorry to hear about your equipment, and I'm telling you this because I've suffered it. In the analogue era I dropped all my equipment into the sea and I couldn't save more than one lens.

I suppose that in Gijón you have gone to Fotocentro, if so, it's the best thing that can happen to you, they are super professional and above all honest. I also tell you from experience, almost all the lenses and cameras I've had I've bought there and the service has been excellent.

I look forward to a favourable outcome.

Best regards and good luck!

I did go there, a photographer, who I know frome the Instagram, recommended them! Today I bought my new Vanessa there, the insurance gave me the green light 💪💪💪 I am a very happy camper today 🥳 no I wanted to go further but I see that the roads are closed because of bush fires... need to overthink my trip now.

Nice place and nice photos !
