  • DEFINITION:

Diabetes Mellitus is just group of conditions where the blood sugar is way beyond normal (bloody glucose) and as you know, excess of everything is bad.....

Hence when these values of blood sugar gets above normal, it is not good for our health and constitutes some health hazards.

Scientifically, it is defined as when you have a fasting blood sugar level of 126mg/DL and above
Don't bother about that and get the rest of the information 👍

2dk2RRM2dZ8gKjXsrozapsD83FxL3Xbyyi5LFttAhrXxr16mCe4arfLHA37mQtCuynkak9C9VAyzKhJzawjAnpZVPV4BTUgXQgevipxojgGca8HQiNacgNnd3p9YWFkpDrxMbRB7oT2caY9jaK4vboQS2LQGEfNMmu1guFfCfp.webp

  • FUNDAMENTAL CAUSE:

This is generally caused when the body's hormone, insulin, has been compromised either in quantity or in functionality.

The insulin is the hormone responsible for regulating the body's sugar/ blood glucose.

There are conditions where the insulin production from the pancreas gland is very small that it can't be enough to mop all the blood sugar in the system and this will cause Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus.

While, there are conditions where there are enough insulin production, the insulin are everywhere in the blood but then the problem here is that the insulins produced are not functional enough..... It will take 20 of these insulins to do the work 4 normal insulin molecules will do comfortably.

The body is resistant to the insulin hormones it produce and this causes Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.

2dk2RRM2dZ8gKjXsrozapsD83FxL3Xbyyi5LFttAhrXxr16mCe4arfLHA37mQtCuynkak9C9VAyzKhJzawjAnpZVPV4BTUgXQgevipxojgGca8HQiNacgNnd3p9YWFkpDrxMbRB7oT2caY9jaK4vboQS2LQGEfNMmu1guFfCfp.webp

  • SYMPTOMS:

When these conditions sets in, it is usually noticed by patients that they urinate more than normal and consequently drinks water more than they formerly do also (terms we call polydipsia and polyuria).

There is also increased need to eat (what we call polyphagia).
This happens because the body needs insulin to make use of the blood glucose and since they're not there, there will be need for continuous need of energy which you can get only by eating and you will keep on eating.

There are also associated weight gain and fatigue or lethargy.

However, having these symptoms doesn't automatically mean you have diabetes but you can just take a walk to the nearby hospital and check your blood glucose level... It's not costly at all.

  • DIABETES AND LIFESTYLE / RISk FACTORS OF DIABETES:

Excessive Carbohydrates Consumption:

Carbohydrate foods are one of the classes of foods that gives high calorie (glucose) when degraded, continuous consumption of this puts us at risk of getting diabetic especially when we don't balance our lifestyle with suitable excretory mechanisms.

Sedentary Lifestyle:

This is for us who stay indoor all day, week, month and year long without basically going out to engage in other outdoor activities aside from Hiving 🌝.
It is a risk factor for diabetes please.

Alcohol And Smoking:

Nicotine contained in tobacco changes body cells so they don't respond to insulin and this will lead to accumulation of glucose in the blood causing diabetes.

In the same way, most of our alcoholic drinks contain big cubes amount of sugar and heavy drinking of these will lead to the body's insensitivity to insulin.

Increased Stress:

Stress causes the body to produce stress hormones which would enable the body to be able to accommodate the whole stress you are putting yourself on without breaking down.

This is really a good thing but then the negative aspect of it is that these stress hormones are antagonists of insulin hormone.

The stress hormones includes epinephrine (adrenaline), cortisol and others.

What insulin antagonists means is that whenever they are in the blood stream, blood glucose will keep on increasing and you remember our definition of Diabetes Mellitus?

Kudos I know you do, hehehe.

Age:

This is a non modifiable factor.
As we grow old, most of our organs start getting weak and this could also affect the pancreas organs responsible for secretion of insulin and glucagon for the management of blood glucose.

Idiopathic:

This is an umbrella term covering diabetes without a traceable fault.
There's no known cause of diabetes in this particular case.

2dk2RRM2dZ8gKjXsrozapsD83FxL3Xbyyi5LFttAhrXxr16mCe4arfLHA37mQtCuynkak9C9VAyzKhJzawjAnpZVPV4BTUgXQgevipxojgGca8HQiNacgNnd3p9YWFkpDrxMbRB7oT2caY9jaK4vboQS2LQGEfNMmu1guFfCfp.webp

  • COMPLICATIONS OF DIABETES MELLITUS:

When diabetes mellitus is unchecked and untreated for many years, it could be very harmful and could even lead to the death of the person.

Some of the complications includes but not limited to:

Nephropathy
Neuropathy
Retinopathy
Diabetic foot ulcer (one of the most common causes of amputation)
Stroke
Heart diseases
Loss of vision/ eye diseases
Diabetic ketoacidosis

Then for persons already taking drugs for diabetes, they could be Hypoglycemic when they overdose on their medications.

I would have loved to explain these terms but I don't want to bore you but you can always ask me in the comment section for an explanation or the link up as to how Diabetes Mellitus causes them (For Non-science students)

2dk2RRM2dZ8gKjXsrozapsD83FxL3Xbyyi5LFttAhrXxr16mCe4arfLHA37mQtCuynkak9C9VAyzKhJzawjAnpZVPV4BTUgXQgevipxojgGca8HQiNacgNnd3p9YWFkpDrxMbRB7oT2caY9jaK4vboQS2LQGEfNMmu1guFfCfp.webp

  • PREVENTION:

The sad truth is that you can still keep to all of these and still get down with diabetes but this is just you doing the very best you can do as a human being.

Exercise:

This will help your body muscles to make use of the glucose in your blood rather than leaving them to roam around.
This could also help your insulin and organs work better.

Reduce Stress And Sleep Well:

Sleep will help your organs function properly and better deal with the glucose surge when you wake up.

The stress hormones will also be reduced if we limit the amount of works we give to our body.

Balanced diet (enough protein and vegetables):

It's easier to spend eating balanced diets than to spend buying antidiabetics drugs.

Aside from the fact that you will enjoy the meals, it will also help you keep your blood glucose in check since you are not taking only carbohydrates and fats.

Drink Enough Water:

This will help your kidneys excrete large numbers of these glucose in the blood.

Regular medical checkup:

This is really nice and it's something we've not come to familiarise ourselves with in Nigeria...

Regular medical checkups are very nice as they helps in early detection of health issues and nothing beats early presentation to the clinic.

This will help the medical team to have wide range of drugs and options to help you bounce back rather than when you're already in the terminal stage.

2dk2RRM2dZ8gKjXsrozapsD83FxL3Xbyyi5LFttAhrXxr16mCe4arfLHA37mQtCuynkak9C9VAyzKhJzawjAnpZVPV4BTUgXQgevipxojgGca8HQiNacgNnd3p9YWFkpDrxMbRB7oT2caY9jaK4vboQS2LQGEfNMmu1guFfCfp.webp

  • TREATMENT:

There is no total cure for diabetes, the best doctors can do is place you on management with various antidiabetic drugs.
But the goodnews is that if you are compliant to medication and also improve your lifestyle, you will still reach the age destined for you.

2dk2RRM2dZ8gKjXsrozapsD83FxL3Xbyyi5LFttAhrXxr16mCe4arfLHA37mQtCuynkak9C9VAyzKhJzawjAnpZVPV4BTUgXQgevipxojgGca8HQiNacgNnd3p9YWFkpDrxMbRB7oT2caY9jaK4vboQS2LQGEfNMmu1guFfCfp.webp

Inspiration Behind The Post

I chose this post because of the experience I had few weeks ago and I must thank the #HiveLearners Community for the opportunity.

When I went home for Christmas celebration, my mum told me our neighbor was sick.
We went to visit her and sympathise with her and I noticed she had foot ulcer and my mind immediately went to diabetic foot disease (a complication of untreated diabetes mellitus), I told her to go check her blood glucose at the hospital nearby but she insisted that it was poison from her in-laws 🤧.

I persuaded her to the best of my abilities but she insisted and kept on patronising local herbalists.

Few weeks ago, my mum called me that the foot kept on decaying and coming up almost to her thigh levels...

One day she lost consciousness and was rushed to the hospital, her sugar level was checked and it was very very high...
The doctors tried their best to stabilise her but she died few days after her stay in the ICU (Intensive Care Unit)

I hate hearing stories like this. It is always very painful when someone dies a death that could have been easily and affordably prevented. Had she known the real cause of her issues, she will still be with us.

One unfortunate killer is Ignorance. During postings, we always hear of patients that showed symptoms of diseases, but instead of going to the hospital, they decided to seek for alternative sources of treatment. It doesn't work for all people, and by the time they decide to go the hospital, it is already too late.

I wish her family members strength to go cope with her loss.

In the meantime health education is very important and it is amazing that you used your platform to educate people, in the way that they would understand too.

Well done... Spoken like a true Doctor 🤗

One unfortunate killer is Ignorance

Indeed it is and it's always very sad when you are on the other end.
I keep saying this that most of our sicknesses have scientific origins and we should always try to seek for medical attentions first before we seek out for our other barbaric disease origins... I don't doubt they exist oo.

Thanks for reading that lengthy write-up and leaving a comment aside the whining you ended with though😂😂

Hopefully, more and more people will get the message.

I'm not whining you oo, you're gonna be a doctor in a little bit, and a great one at that🌹

Hehehe

Thanks a lot

You're welcome dear... I'm on my road to be a doctor actually not already one, hehe.

You can only do the much you can but I'm glad you're taking care of your diets Because asides exercise, diets are the major contributing factors that make the diabetic gene go manifest

So glad you came around to read me and left a comment, i really appreciate

Wow! this is a comprehensive post which I learnt a lot from.

This is for us who stay indoor all day, week, month and year long without basically going out to engage in other outdoor activities aside from Hiving 🌝.It is a risk factor for diabetes please.

Like seriously? I am beginning to get scared because I am more of an indoor person, a real introvert, but I guess I should start taking a stroll out to prevent diabetes.

Before I left my village this January, my sister helped me check my blood sugar level and browsing it, I found out I had pre-diabetes. Does that happen before the real diabetes? I have stopped taking sugar and eating more of proteins and vegetables too, in fact taking more fruits.

In the case of the woman, it was ignorance that killed her, I am sorry to say this. I watched a movie like that, the young boy was bitten while playing in the stream, this is a true life story that was played as movie. For two years, they were still nursing this wound that kept growing while they did all manners of sacrifices. Some people from the city came to the village for health awareness and took this boy to the city when they found out he had a disease called Buruli Ulcer, which was as a result of an insect that bit him. All the while, they thought it was diabolical not knowing it was something that needed medical attention. Though he was treated, but it caused him to limp for the rest of his life.

Perhaps if the woman had heed your advice and went to the hospital for checkup, such thing wouldn´t have happened. Ignorance kills.

Thanks for sharing.

Definitely taking a stroll will be very helpful and much more exercise if it's convenient for you

Does that happen before the real diabetes?

Yes, there are values called prediabetic points but it doesn't automatically means you'll be diabetic especially when you start looking after your health immediately.
Glad you found out and also took care of yourself by modifying your diet.

It was ignorance and too much diabolical beliefs...

Thanks for reading such a lengthy post of mine and leaving a comment

It was worth the read too which I did enjoyed every bit of it.

Thanks

Prevention is the best cure. It's something that we, should we still be in our youth, should take heed of.

Exactly.... Prevention they say is very better cure

Bro... This is a really informative post. It's buzzing with quality and I learned so much from it. Information is really important. I'm glad that I got to learn these much from this post. The next big step is to put these things into pratice.

Yep.. having the knowledge is one thing and the next is putting them into practice, hehehe.

Hopefully, you will😂

Hahah... Hopefully ooooo. There are so many things that relates to health and remembering all of them is already impossible.

I just hope to practice as much of these as possible.

Sure

Hi @sperosamuel15 what a great post, exquisite, precise and instructive. Well done, good job.
You give us succinctly, in a friendly and preventive language, the information of a nosological entity that monopolizes considerable morbidity and mortality statistics due to its high frequency, worldwide.
I always say it to my patients, friends and relatives; the control of diabetes mellitus depends 99.99% on the patient himself. Their evolution and quality of life will depend on their acceptance process, with the consequent awareness.
This is a determining and conditioning aspect in chronic pathologies.
Until another opportunity.
Happy Sunday.

Wow.... Really happy for always reading my post and leaving a comment, I will always appreciate.

You will really understand since you're a doctor.

You give us succinctly, in a friendly and preventive language

I'm happy I achieved my aim which was for non medical students to understand this message

So, feel happy that you have achieved the vital goal: you have promoted health, encouraged the practice of healthy lifestyles and the awareness that even with a chronic disease such as diabetes mellitus, it is possible to lead a quality life with fewer complications. Well done 👏👏👏👏👏😃✨

😂😂😂😂
I sure am happy

That's a sad story at the end. I take water, though not as much as someone I know and I don't take sugary things. I have some health complications already.

People don't believe in medical checkup. I mean Most Nigerians.

Yeah and that's what makes it more difficult for us here in Nigeria

Well, we are called "blacks" for a reason.

The publication is very complete, I have learned more about diabetes. I have never met anyone who looked like it; neither close nor distant, but I do know a little about its consequences (so far).

Glad you learnt a lot

This is a detailed post about diabetes, I am a little familiar with because I have heard a lot of people suffer from the effect of the diseases but I was never able to differentiate between type 1 and 2.

I always consider the illness to be for alcohol consumers because it rampant among them.

Thanks to your post I was able to highlight few preventions that can be used to prevent the diseases, after all prevention is better than cure.

This sickness is a terrible illness! I don't pray such sickness falls on my enemies sincerely speaking from experience! It killed my best friend's father when her wedding is so close! Sometimes when our parents correct us we don't see the future benefits yet till old age comes. I use to know the cause of this sickness to be from too much consumption of sugar and alcohol. I love how to took the time to explain this and also way to curb them!

It sure is a bad sickness... Not as if any sickness is good though.

Thanks for taking out your time to read also and I'm glad you enjoyed it
