Along Water, near the village of Jaujac, we found Present, Past and and a sort of Appeasement

in Wednesday Walklast year (edited)

Back in Ardèche for a personal tour of the village perched in the mountains of Jaujac. It is a country of altitudes, volcanic rocks and water, above all, which sculpts the massifs, the reliefs and the valleys... and finally the roads that one must take to reach the heights. Indeed, all these roads scrupulously follow the course of each river, and each valley bears the name of the river that created it.

It's something simple, obvious and yet striking when you take the time to look at it. And I also think it's good to have in mind, before we go any further, some broader considerations, the idea of longer time, of air, rocks and water before we take our own, as humans, as a base.

On the market place, it is very quiet. The winter season here is a time of great rest ! Even when the sun comes out a little.

IMG_9443.JPG

On the first of these two photos, you can see the small building of the "Poids publics", which was the place where the official weights and measures were given to the scales on market days.

On the second, the inevitable war memorial, with a soldier frozen as if he had fallen, a "model" that I have not seen very often...

IMG_9271.JPG

A quick drive through the village and the leaves blaze in the blue sky with big clouds. Traditional stone houses. Many are closed for the season and will only be reopened in the summer.

IMG_9279.JPG

Arrival on the bridge that joins the two parts of the village, the first on the plateau we are leaving, and the second, clinging to the mountain, on the other side of the small river Lignon. It is this river that we will approach...

IMG_9285.JPG

IMG_9290.JPG

Some details on the other side of the bridge. Frames that are sometimes closed, sometimes open to the world. From the small ruin where this window is located, a small path leads down into the gorge carved by the river.

Some background resources on the geological history of the place and the region.

The last trace of civilisation, this electricity production station which channels part of the living flow to transform its energy.

IMG_9306.JPG

IMG_9303.JPG

Arriving at the level of the flowing water...

IMG_9307.JPG

IMG_9309.JPG

The light is changeable, but whatever the weather, the basaltic orgues, these geometric formations due to the cooling of the lava of the volcanoes of the time, keep all their majesty.

IMG_9333.JPG

IMG_9318.JPG

IMG_9320.JPG

A small stone bridge with double arches. Finally, another mark of civilisation... Perhaps closer to what we are all looking for now. Something anchored, from the base that connects us to the living, whether we are still conscious of it or not.

IMG_9335.JPG

IMG_9349.JPG

The sun returns and the whole landscape changes again. Not quite different, not quite the same.

IMG_9347.JPG

The urge to get a little closer to the element had taken hold of us and although I knew it was going to be good, I'm not sure it's an idea to recommend when you're on your second day of covid haha ^^ The water was really cold, but a little bit of icy vivacity can only be good, right ?

IMG_9376.JPG

Return to the village by the river...

IMG_9356.JPG

IMG_9358.JPG

IMG_9360.JPG

Having just recovered from our simple and true emotions drawn from the river gorge, we climbed just high enough in the perched part, just enough to have a view of the rest of the village, and the landscape of old eroded volcanoes. Yes, pay attention ;-)

I hope this walk will have interested you, don't hesitate to bring your questions and feelings in comments.

Thank you for your visit and reading,

Sort:

I have heard a lot about the Ardèche region so thank you for finally taking me there and showing me around a bit.
I loved the concept of the "Poids publics". I was never aware of such system but it is yet another reminder how throughout history, humanity always found ways to counter those who always looked for ways to be bad apples.

Ah, I'm all the more happy to have shared on this subject :)

Yes, there are many attempts... this could be a pretty exciting book really !

Have a good weekend ✌️

What a walk @anttn 😊🥰 wonderful.
The village, the plateaus, the little traditional houses… stunning. And going further.
The river and bridge. Magical in every way.
So nice you enjoyed it that much. 😎
Thanks for sharing with us, I so enjoyed going along on this walk.
Take care 😘 and enjoy the rest of the week!

Hey @littlebee4 !

True dream place indeed :)

such a beautiful area I love those trees

Thanks for joining the Wednesday walk :)

It's even more intense as I don't live there, not yet... just passing through ! But maybe soon settled for the year ?

Thanks you for this really nice place, I hope you're doing well those days :)

What a lovely view! I really love the colors and the atmosphere. Quite an inspiration to my watercolor musings:D

Indeed, isn't ?
My brother told me that it was even more intense two weeks earlier :)

Ahh, if that inspires you, then I'm happy and doubly rewarded ! Looking forward to seeing your next creations ✌️

Wao an impressive walk in the old buildings of this city, you can see part of how they lived in those times, in the photos you can see how strong and robust the fort is and at the same time how beautiful the buildings look.

Apparently it was one of those quiet towns where they knew each other, no doubt it must have been a very fun and interesting walk.

Yes, there must have been this cordiality that you speak of and that we still find in the small villages... It was indeed very nice and even nicer to relive it and share it :)

Thank you for your visit ✌️

It's really good going to historical places..you're not only enjoying, but also learning 😁

Always haha ! I do indeed like things to be multi-faceted :D

Enjoy your weekend ✌️😘
