Walks in Thasos - When the walk is more enjoyable than the beach

in Wednesday Walklast year (edited)

I am, like most people, adept at movement and walking, walking is by far the most enjoyable and easy form of movement, outside the home. I got into the habit, every Wednesday, writing something about the walk following the rules of @tattoodjay's @WednesdayWalk challenge and the #Pinmapple map!

The rules are simple and can be summarised as follows:

"Try and get out once a week for a short walk, which can be from your office, home, or anywhere really, and walk for a few blocks or a few minutes looking for things to get shots of."

Nothing could be simpler, easier, nicer, and more permissive! That's why this challenge is tried by so many here in Hive.

My walks in this winter season that is not winter, or is winter for a few days and then turns into autumn and spring, are not so spectacular, I can say they are even boring and that's why I resort to memories of summer walks. Warm and pleasant memories.

Below I will try to show why I preferred walking instead of the beach in my holidays on Thasos Island in Greece...

I must admit now that I have no greater joy and excitement than when I get close to this island. The joy is twofold, both that I will be leaving the "ship" because I am very afraid of the deep water, and that I will be back in my favorite vacation spot, which I always dream about after I leave there.

Thasos is an island in the Aegean Sea, in northern Greece. It is a mountainous island, one of the largest of Greece's thousands of islands.

On the island, there is everything for all tastes... Modern hotels, resorts for those with special comfort needs...

Normal hotels, modest hotels, villas, and houses where people can find a place to stay. Obviously, I think it's obvious that I choose a small, normal hotel with sufficient comfort and great hosts. The main criterion of choice, when I think about location, is that it is close to... the forest. Not the beach... the forest, I'm not wrong!

The explanation is simple, my wife and I, I mean us, prefer walks...

...instead of sunbathing. Now I must confess the truth, for decades we preferred the beach, but now, age and health force us to choose the walk.

To tell the whole truth, we haven't given up on the beach and sea bathing altogether. It's impossible to do that when you end up on an island. It's just that we've only reduced our beach time to no more than an hour a day.

Walks, on the other hand, take up much more of our time on the island. That's four to five hours a day. Walks through small towns and villages, mainly to see the old, well-preserved, and still inhabited parts.

The favorite place to walk on extremely hot summer days remains the pine forest.

By chance, the first time I went to Thasos, I chose Limenaria as my resort. It was a very good choice, especially as I found my favorite breakfast and coffee place 4 km away in another resort, Potos. This helped us to take long walks, 8 - 10 km a day. Each time crossing a pine forest.

Probably this route, Limenaria-Potos, is very popular and used by tourists. I think this is because there is a path that connects these places which makes walking easier.

Obviously, here it is outside the forest and this helps to see other landscapes and the relief and vegetation specific to the island and the Mediterranean climate.

Moreover, this trail also crosses an olive grove. Of course, you can't imagine Greece without olive trees!

The olive trees are one of the island's riches, pine honey is another, much sweeter...

Walks can be tedious sometimes if they are too long, but that can't happen here. Two beaches are on this route. A beach is hidden from view, a beach for connoisseurs... Paralia Metalia.

... and a beach, actually a small resort called Pefkari, very popular with tourists, a resting place for us on our way to coffee.

Finally, I must point out something else that seems characteristic of the Greek islands. Domestic goats that are... wild. So I think, these goats live free in the woods and orchards but I think they still have an owner.

After such a long and enjoyable walk, all you can wish for is a shower...

... and then, just rest, maybe...

... looking at a flower!

God, how I miss those walks!

Oh Greece, you look so far away! 💙 (though my husband and I were just talking the other day where to go in Greece this year,,, hmmm... Any ideas?).

I so love this post! I didnt know about that path that connects Limenaria to Potos. I think its a beautiful path to walk on! And that pine forest....its like WOW! I'm in love with it already, without seeing it. Just from your photos, I could tell I would enjoy this walk 100000/100000. I only imagine how nice would be for young people to wake up in the morning, very early and go for a run on that beautiful path!...

I love Pefkari beach, I think (I'm not sure but I think) I was on that beach. It was beautiful there and the water was hot! Like really really warm. It was our last day here in vacation, first time in Thassos 5 years ago.
The goats are also cute, we've seem them too.

Thank you for sharing this! I surely enjoyed it!

I've had Greece on my mind for three years since I couldn't go there... Recommendation? Hardly, because I haven't seen anything but Thasos. I can say what I would like. An island with lots of vegetation, not an island without forests, just mountains or bare hills, even if it would have great beaches and waters. I'd like to go to Corfu. My son recommends Kefalonia. He has been to both islands, which are much further away from us. For Corfu, he drove 12 hours, from Bucharest and then an hour and a half by ferry. I think you can also go by plane.

Maybe someone would say I'm crazy if I say that we go to Thasos especially for this walk between Limenaria and Potos. There are, of course, many other things we like but this walk is what we think of first...

I'm glad you enjoyed reading about Thasos, in my version. I, too, was delighted to read your posts about Thasos. I'm glad that you love this place too, it makes me less afraid that I'm crazy or clueless because I'm so delighted with this island which, however, is not recognized as one of the most beautiful in Greece.

Corfu was on our list 3 years ago but because of Covid we had to cancel it. Kefalonia is also an option. We do same, 12-14 hra to corfu, lefkada or kefalonia.

We'll see....and my husband just asked me to make a research, see if we can decide on something.

Thasos is special for us too because we love the vegetation. An island without the green trees and vegetation in our opinion, is not that great. We love beaches, but we are not the type going to the beach and forget go home. We wont last more than a few hrs, max. We love to walk, explore nature, food places...
I understand the love for thr path you mentioned. Looks really beautiful, I can truly understand and imagine how nice it is to have a walk on the path.

And no, you're not crazy. Mu husband just said he is also in love with thassos. And for sure we'll go again someday.

I'm so glad, @missdeli, that you love Thasos for the same reasons I do.
You know, of course, that Thasos is a destination for hundreds of thousands of Romanians, and it can be said that many go out of a herd spirit, because it is fashionable and somewhat easy to get to. Fortunately, it's not the same for us.

I agree. It's true even for me, we went there first time 5 years ago. I was pregnant 3 months already.
And we wanted Thassos because it's relatively close to use. Also we just came back from Canada 3 weeks before so we thought Thassos would be pur best choice in these circumstances.

But we came back 4 years later and that means something. Also we're thinking we'll visit again someday so its really a place we love. A lot.

I'm glad it is. Probably in a few years, it will be easier to travel to Greece when the highways will be finished in our country and in Bulgaria..., maybe they will accept us in Schengen...

I really hope that but I soo sooo doubt it these will be ready! We are so far behind with everything!☹️

WOW so beautiful there
Our winter has been similar to yours up and dowqn all over the place and not at all picturesque

Thanks for joining the Wednesday, its always fun for me to visit the walks from all around the world, getting a feel for communities where people live and what they see on their daily walks

Thank you!
Yes, it would seem that this change of winter was everywhere.

Thasos is one of the most preferred Greek island by Turks as it is closer and budget. I have never been to Thasos, I think it might be cooler in summer than the islands in the south because it is a mountain island in the north.

I haven't been until mid-September but my friends tell me that summer is very hot!

The initiators of hive Wednesday walk foresaw the future of hive community to bring about this idea. Frankly say, I view the world and other zones from my very own place. Inverably, I travel round just through reading, viewing and engaging on posts. Thanks @bluemoon for sharing in

One thing you have said here is absolutely true that when a person gets older it becomes more important for him to go for a walk every day because it becomes more important for his health. It also protects a person from future diseases. When a person is young, his thinking is different, as he gets older, his thinking also changes. i love to see this type of amazing and peaceful places. Overall your photography is awesome but last picture is my favorite in your photography. Thanks for sharing.
