Wednesday Walk - My Short Walk in Rennes, France with some Street Photography

Authored by @iTravelRox

Coming to Rennes was not for tourism as my husband had some business here. We arrived here in the late afternoon so there was little daylight to take good photos.

My husband warned me about my Nikon D5100. This is not 'la campagne.' This is a big city like Paris so somebody might rob my camera. He could not show me around so I was free to walk around. But as a pregnant woman, I cannot go to many places as I would get tired quickly. Also, I never wanted to get lost in the new city.

Some little street photography

I never made any research on what to see and what to do here in Rennes. While taking photos, I had no idea the names of the building. But I got interested of the architecture of the buildings.

I had no idea what kind of building is this. A city hall? A school? Or a museum? No idea.

Across the nice building is another street with buildings and some boutiques.

I have to cross the street to take this photo. As of this writing, just a few minutes ago, I did a little research. It's a school.

The Lycée

The Lycée or Collège Émile-Zola is a public secondary school in Rennes , located on Avenue Janvier. It is one of the first nine French high schools , created in 1802 . It opened in 1803 , succeeding, on the same site, the municipal and royal college Saint-Thomas and the central school of Ille-et-Vilaine.

I didn't know it was a palace until my husband told me. I didn't walk further. I just took a zoom photo from where I was.

Palais Saint-Georges

The Saint George Palace (French: Palais Saint-Georges) is a historic building in the city of Rennes. Formerly an abbey residence, it was built in 1670 to replace a much older abbey building that stood on the same site. The Benedictine Abbey of Saint George (Abbaye Saint-Georges de Rennes) was forced to close in 1792 during the French Revolution and the property was seized by the government. Since 1930 the building has been listed as a monument historique of France.

Two Strangers Approached Me

I got a little scared when they approached me since they were speaking French. They sounded drunk. They had an eye on my camera. I didn't panic. I should have run but a pregnant woman couldn't run that quick. Hahaha!

I just calmed down a little and I said I don't speak French, only English. They just wanted me to take photos of them. LOL

DSC_0245.JPG

Okay, it was a quick photo as I needed to find a toilet. I needed to pee. It was so cold. But it was funny to have a little chitchat with them. I thought they were bad people and rob my camera. Whew!

DSC_0247.JPG

They could see I was a tourist and having a DSLR camera made me more look like a tourist. It felt so weird being approached by strangers.

DSC_0248.JPG

I said, ok, finish done. Nice to meet you! I was in a hurry. I felt so cold.

I went to a coffee shop

I didn't take any pictures along the way. I also didn't take pictures of the coffee shop. I don't want to be obvious that I was a tourist. I was happy to find a coffee shop and went directly to the toilet. After that, I just ordered some hot chocolate.

Facebook caption be like:

Should be doing street photography before the sun is gone but I ended up ordering hot choco while wandering around.

What I have observed is that people here don't take a lot of photos. Unlike Filipinos, whenever they are in a coffee shop, they take photos for social media. Hahaha!

I was just afraid that people would look at me while taking photos. I don't want to be in an awkward situation.

I continued to walk around with just two selfies

I just enjoyed walking around in the heart of the city. I just needed to make sure I wasn't lost. I had no idea where to go. I took out my mobile phone to take a few selfies. My husband called me and I went back to his place. After seeing him, I walked further.

I found a Christmas Fun Fare

Since it was December 2019, Christmas was approaching already. The moment I reached the area, I smelled something cooking, maybe garlic and onion. And I found out there was kebab and fries. Hahaha!

I took a few photos of the rides but I was really hungry. I went to the food stall area. I didn't take any photos anymore because there were a lot of people.

I enjoyed eating my kebab and fries when my husband called me. I updated where I was and he updated me that he was almost done with his business.

DSC_0252.JPG

I enjoyed walking around while munching my fries. I ate the kebab first because I was really hungry.

DSC_0253.JPG

I got excited like a little child. I couldn't do any rides because of pregnancy!

DSC_0255.JPG

Then, I saw Father Christmas or Santa Claus. Behind Santa Claus is a huge building, a cinema place with little restaurants. I went inside to find a toilet.

DSC_0256.JPG

The time was too quick. I just enjoyed my 30 minutes in the amusement park. It was totally fine with me.

DSC_0257.JPG

My husband gave me 50 Euros but I only spent 10 Euros. I just bought food and drink. Oh, for the coffee shop, I used my debit card as they never had change for a 50 Euro bill.

Anyway, I had to go back to see my husband. We had a little turn of the city to see the fun fare before we went home.

This is my entry for the #wednesdaywalk challenge, hosted by @tattoodjay.

Rennes is a great wee town, I used to watch football there.

Yes, hoping we could go back here for tourism. hehe

Lovely photos. The men were with a dog and seem affectionate to it, which is a good sign that they are probably good people.

Cool, nice observation with the dog. Yes, the dog was friendly to me. hehe.

glad the two guys were nice and only wanted their photos taken, it must have bene unnerving when they first approached you

That was the first time I got scared of being approached by strangers while wandering solo. maybe being pregnant was just different.

its good to be aware and cautious, hopefully this is the firts and last time

and Yes being pregnant I am sure changes your perspective

I hope so. :D

Thank you.

Hi Roxanne :) It's great that you were able to take this tour and get to know these beautiful buildings. I also like buildings with beautiful architecture, although many times I don't know what they are either haha. And I'm glad those people weren't bad people, sometimes looking like a tourist in an unknown place can leave you vulnerable. Luckily they were honest people.

Greetings to you, I hope you had fun on your Wednesday walk :) ❤️

Hi @lauramica! Thanks for dropping by. Yes, I really love to do street photography taking photos of the buildings. Thankful they were nice people. I used to do solo travel in Asian countries but that was the first time I wander around alone in a French city. :D
