“Dean Village” ~ Walk through a beautiful “hidden” village in Edinburgh Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

in Wednesday Walk2 years ago

Hi all 👋🏻

c9ce6d52_5915_47a5_ae1e_0f8ba419aebc

With this post I’m joining in at the Wednesday Walk challenge and Make me Smile challenge. That are hosted by @tattoodjay and @elizacheng every week on Wednesday.

‼️Have a look: Here in the Wednesday Walk Community if you want to join in! or at @tattoodjay ’s Post here: A walk in the Knowles Reserve!
It tells you also the rules of joining 😁

Today is a special little day… I’M 6 MONTHS ON HIVE 🥳🥳🥳 so what’s not better than to share one of my favourite posts: A WEDNESDAY WALK 🎉🎉🎉
(I know it’s not a year but still it’s great 😉😎)

So here it is;
I will guide you through my photographs and my walk through Dean Village, Edinburgh Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 today. It’s a little “hidden gem” actually as not many know about it 😉 So let’s spread the word 😎

I will follow the time stamps of my photographs.
So you can walk along the village with me and look at all the stunning surroundings I show you 😎 as if you would be right there with me taking it all in. 😉

Photos are all taken with my iPhone on the 14 April 2022 not that long ago.

More information about Dean Village can be found here: In this website!

It states (partly, so read more about it on the website):
”Dean Village (from dene, meaning 'deep valley') is a former village immediately northwest of the city centre of Edinburgh, Scotland. It was known as the "Water of Leith Village" and was a successful grain milling area for more than 800 years. At one time there were no fewer than eleven working mills there, driven by the strong currents of the Water of Leith.

The mills of Dene were first mentioned in King David I's founding charter of Holyrood Abbey, usually dated c. 1145, in which he granted one of his mills of Dene to the Abbey.

The area remained a separate village until the 19th century. In 1826, John Learmonth, a future Lord Provost of Edinburgh, purchased the Dean Estate from the Nisbets of Dean.

Due to the development of much larger and more modern flour mills at Leith, Dean Village's trade diminished. For many years, the village became associated with decay and poverty, and it reached a low point by around 1960.

From the mid-1970s onwards it became recognised as a tranquil oasis, very close to the city centre, and redevelopment and restoration began, converting workers' cottages, warehouses and mill buildings.

Lets start our walk!

The first road we see when we enter Dean village.

We see a bridge going over the Water of Leith.

On the bridge to the left we have this stunning view 🤩

The view towards the right gives you this view.

Let’s look a bit more on the other side. As you can see it was a moody day and it made my photographs a bit more atmospherically interesting. 😎

Viewing in the corner of the bridge…

Yes… let’s explore a bit more. I like what I see. Do you too?

As we wander around through the streets we see these very large buildings with ceramic piping on the outside. It looks very industrial. I like it 😎

A little further we find a small footbridge that gives us the view towards the bridge we were just standing. Around the far corner…
Just from the other side. 😊

Look at that architecture and details. Stunning…

The building with towers on the left, is: ”Well Court, the most iconic building in the village. This building was built in the 1880s and housed local workers who worked at the water mills.” Source.

I see we can get down to the water, where that gentleman is standing with his puppy dog.

Let’s go there… and walk past the river a bit.

View from that exact spot.

We walk now under the little footbridge… the opposite side.

I find some interesting flowers I haven’t seen before… after I tried Google I still don’t know what it is. It looks kind like a lily species but… also not. As it has more parts going out of more parts hahaha no idea how to describe it. 😉

Let’s walk further…

The water next to us and a log.

After I heard a sound we find this waterfall.

I see a bird and try to capture it… but who am I kidding. I’m on my phone… no way I can get a clear zoom of it. Missing my camera here 🤓

We find out we can’t go further as the path was blocked. So we walk back to the footbridge and explore more streets. (There are not many as you could see on the map) let’s go into some courtyards…

One has some nice views of the architecture. The designs are beautiful. And we find this clock tower.

Let’s look around us:

I especially like the corners with it’s layers…

Again the black pipes. I know it is necessary but with painting them black it looks very cool and industrial 😎 it fits this mill village perfectly.

Going out of the courtyard, I snap this photo.

Tried to avoid other tourists… not always succeeded 😉

As we walk out over the first bridge we came… I capture one more shot of these old buildings and their stonework. They sure did a great job restoring them all.

We walk out of the village and will follow a walking path next to the Water of Leith.

The last houses of the village have a garden… look at that bench and it’s views… very cute. I can imagine sitting there, watching the world go by 🥰

A waterfall to go along with it.

A little bit further we see this large bridge.

Dean Bridge:
”The four-arched Dean Bridge spans a width of over 400 feet and is 106 feet above the water level. It carries the Queensferry Road over the Dean Gorge, and was built at the joint expense of John Learmonth and the Cramond Road Trustees. The contractors were John Gibb & Son, from Aberdeen.” Source.

A large walking group is in front of us, let’s wait a little until they walk on. So we can take pretty pictures 😉
I see next to me these details. Moss on the stone balustrade. Very soft… let’s run our fingers through it… 😁

Our view through the trees… we see this building.

I’m the patient person, but this group just didn’t move… ok let’s just walk past them 🤓
I see the building next to the bridge.

We are closer to the bridge now. See how high it is.

We follow a smaller path now along the river. I see this gate. Hhhmmm hidden gardens maybe?

And next to us the Water of Leith.

It just kept growing and growing…

So cool to see… but somehow sad. Yes, eventually nature will take over again 😁 good on you Mother Nature.

From the other side. No idea what it is.

Suddenly I see 2 crows… picking on the large heron.

They are truly bullying him.

Shu shu go away… leave him alone.

Fly off heron… come off you go. Find another spot for lunch.

We see the following statue appearing.

Google maps says it’s St. Bernard's Well.

More information you can find here: In this website!

It states:
”SITUATED ON THE BANKS OF the Water of Leith on the edge of Edinburgh stands an 18th-century structure so beautiful it’s almost hard to believe it was built for a well. Legend states it was discovered by a group of schoolboys who were out fishing sometime around 1760. But this became no ordinary well. In the latter part of the 18th century, locals believed the waters of this natural spring had medicinal healing properties.

The ornate structure, designed by Scottish painter Alexander Nasmyth in 1789, displays how the city had embraced the Scottish Enlightenment. The building takes the style of a Greco-Roman temple, complete with Doric columns, a dome topped with a golden pineapple, and a statue of Hygieia, the Greek and Roman goddess of health. Over the doorway is the inscription “Bibendo Valeris”, meaning ; drink and you will be well.

BUT: It was eventually closed in the 1940s because the water contained arsenic and other impurities.”
😳

The structure is beautiful… let’s look closer.

Moments after this historical landmark we are at the end of this path. We did see so much on our walk today!

And so…… I want to end my post today too.
Don’t miss out this truly hidden gem when visiting Edinburgh. It’s worth the walk to it.
Until next time 😎
Hope you enjoyed my photos of this walk and going along with me. Thank you for looking and reading 😊 🙏🏻 Really much appreciated!

Any questions or comments, let me know. Always happy to help.
Have a great Wednesday all 😎

Congratulations on your six months here! Woo-hoo! Time flies when you are having fun!

Edinburg is a beautiful city, it doesn't get nearly the points that many other cities do, but, I think it is definitely worthy of a visit. The buildings, built of stone and the spires and stunning architecture...Truly a historical piece surrounded by the skillfully rehabbed and beautifully kept travel paths.

It was a delightful walk through Dean Village! I am sure I have never been there, but, it was delightful going with you.

Thanks so much for letting us walk with you! Have a wonderful day!

Thank you so much Denise… 🎉🎉 it sure does when you have fun 🤩

It was such a pleasure for me taking you along in this walk through Dean Village. I enjoyed your company!
It’s just stunning and I’m happy I can share it here. It should be higher up in ratings I think, Edinburgh.
I only spend 3 nights there but was truly amazed by it. It is a hidden gem altogether I think. Definitely worth a visit. 😁
Have a wonderful day further Denise 👋🏻☀️

First off happy 6 Month Anniversary on Hive :)

That first image I especially love I feel taken back in time viewing it

and what an amazing walk and post though this beautiful area,
that bridge is amazing from the distance it doesn't look that high but when you showed us it closer WOW, what a feat of engineering back when it was built

the paved roads and historic buildings I love, this post really shows off what an amazing and beautiful place it is

I did visit Edinburgh a couple of times years ago and explored here and there, not sure if I made it to this area

Thanks for joining Wednesday Walk :), I truly enjoy exploring the world virtually each Wednesday seeing walks from all around the globe and feeling I am there and experiencing it all myself, such as I did in your post just now :)

Thank you so much @tattoodjay for the well wishes 🥳🥳 6 months already… time does fly!

Yes, the whole area of this village took me back… to long forgotten times. 😁
The bridge was indeed so high, luckily I could capture it’s height with the closer by photographs. Good to know. Sometimes it just doesn’t show. And I think the people in it helped too.
I would go back anytime to this village and Edinburgh. It was my first time to Scotland and Edinburgh. I truly enjoyed it.

Thanks a lot 😊 so nice to hear.
Happy to share as always 😁 it’s great to be a part of this community!
Enjoy your day 👋🏻☀️

OHH i loved my visits to Scotland, saw quite a bit, again went there to watch Rugby Matches then would head off and explore out of the big cities between games was an awesome time,

you to enjoy your day

That’s great… even to explore Scotland. We only had 3 nights. After that back to my husbands family. As we were hopping around between all for 2 weeks. The Edinburgh trio was a little us time in the middle of it all.
When visiting family, it’s not really a vacation to see things. We just were glad to see them again after more than 2 years.

I know what you mean about visiting family not really being a vacation, it was the same for me when I used to go back to New Zealand, had to try to get a balance between time with family and some time to relax and have a real vacation especially when it is such a long trip gettign there

Exactly… the things we need to handle when living abroad. But it is all worth it, seeing them again 😎
This was the first time we really took a break in the middle. We are going to do that every time now. As it is such a better balance. And that way, hubby can show me where he came from too. As all the other times, we haven’t explored anything. And this was only my 5th time to the UK.

that is a good way to do it, infact thats how I did it when I took my wife back to NZ, some time with family, time for us and then with family again for a couple of days before we headed back that worked so well for us

Dean Village!!! I went that last November when I was in Edinburgh, was really pleased that I found this little gem so near the city center and it wasn't swamped with tourists. It's truly a lovely walk around the village and you captured the atmosphere so well.

And congrats on being on the chain for 6 months, you've done really well during your short time here.

Great you have been @livinguktaiwan 😁 it is so beautiful there… and so different. It sure takes you back in time. I love the river through it, it so adds to the overall feel.

I knew of it’s existence, so this was, with a few other places, the must see in and around Edinburgh. The rest was just unplanned and see what there is to find.
To bad we were only there for 3 nights. Hope to go back one day. As I truly enjoyed wandering around Edinburg. Thanks 😊

Thank you so soooo much 🥳🥳🎉🎉 6 months here. I’m so happy and what a ride it already was…
Have an awesome day further!

This village is really beautiful for photography. The priests who use it for all the photos are beautiful. The symbol building of the village is also beautiful

It sure is a really photogenic village. It was so beautiful to walk around.
Thanks for visiting @azamsohrabi 👋🏻😁 have a wonderful day today ☀️

Yay for 6 months on Hive. What a beautiful walk in Scotland. So fun to go all over the world on these walks.

Thank you so much @sjarvie5 🥳🥳 it went by so fast!

Thanks, it is indeed so much fun to go on walks all over the world on Wednesday. Happy to share my adventures here too.
Have a wonderful day today 👋🏻☀️

Hello dear friend @littlebee4 good day
This is a destination that is on my wish list, Scotland is a place that I must visit.
I am a fan of the buildings of times, especially those that the structures are based on stones
What beautiful images you have chosen for today's walk
Thank you very much for the beautiful photographs and all your history

Have a great day

Hello my friend @jlufer 👋🏻😁
Thank you so much 😊
Scotland and Edinburgh are a must visit. The architecture, the history you find by turning just a corner of a street. It all is breathtakingly beautiful 🤩
Hope you will be able to visit one day 🤞🏻
You are so welcome, happy to share!
Have a great day too ☀️💃🏻

Wow! What a walk!!! With that architectural landscape! I guess you had a great time there!

Thank you so much @belug I had a blast! 😁🤩 I so loved wandering around there… just everything was great. Would love to return one day.
Enjoy your evening 👋🏻😁

Such nice classic vibe. It would be a fun project to try and 3d model that type of architecture.

It sure has @sketch.and.jam 😁 yes, it would make a great project. Wanna try?
I used to build maquettes studying engineering and after sometimes. If only we would have more time… lol
The whole village could be build, as it only consists out of a few streets. 😉🤓

I was thinking more of a 3d computer model than an actual real world dimensional model lol that would be alot of work.

That’s after my time hahaha 😉

But that would work too and takes not to much time. Lots of programs out there nowadays that can render… so only a few edits are needed.

The trickiest part is the lighting and texturing of those models. Some of the modeling in the software could also be tricky.

Yep… tricky.
You need the basic buildings set up and later place one source for light, than add details… as far as you want to go.
Like building blocks.

See building a maquette would be quicker hahaha and paint it all on. Adding texture, grass, moss…. Like they use for those model train sets. Maybe I’m old fashioned hahaha 🤣

This series of photos is astonishing. Both beautiful and scary.

Now I know what the blocks of flats looked like in the previous centuries :)

Never mind, it is beautiful. It's just our mind connecting the dots and making up stories that make it scary.

I need to additionally upvote the photo story,

@tipu curate

Thank you so much @ervin-lemark 😁 much appreciated.
Funny isn’t it? What our minds can tell us… how we perceive things. Sometimes differently than others do.
I had no moment a feeling of scary even now looking back at the photos… I was just astounded by the beauty of the area, the architecture. But that’s maybe the engineer 👷🏻‍♀️ In me talking. Hahaha 🤣 So I do look different at buildings.
Have a wonderful day further 👋🏻☀️

Thank you. Yes, everybody perceives the reality in sync with her/his own background :)

Have a great day.

You are welcome 😁
Indeed!

Thanks a lot 👋🏻☀️

It sad that it is not well kept!
The bridge is wonderful and l like the structure in the end.
Can you imagine how it looked before?

Such a beautiful village Jackie, what I like the most is the architectural building, I also like there is no fencing all over the building, it shows safety and how crimefree the village is, clean and well paved.

Dean Village is beautiful, how long did you stay there for?

Thank you so much @joetunex 😁
Yes me too. Although I’m biased as engineer/ architect hahaha lol
It was so fascinating walking there and studying all the intricate details. Loved it. It’s great to see just that. No safety bars. Here in Spain they are everywhere too. When not… only if you are high up in an apartment complex.

I stayed 3 nights in Edinburg, the “village” a couple of hours wandering around. It’s a neighbourhood in Edinburgh really… nowadays. Think it wasn’t longer than 30 minute walk from the centre.
My first time in Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 I would visit again and explore some more.
I will post more about Edinburgh in due course. As I have many more photos from all kind of different areas 😉😁🤩

Lovely! 🙂 I can stay in that village without complain really love it. Looking forward to more post about Edinburgh.

Thanks 😊
Enjoy your day further Joe!

Thanks and you too Jackie! 🙂

For sure… 👋🏻☀️💃🏻💃🏻💃🏻💃🏻 Thanks.

How beautiful it is there.
I want to go to Kilberne, which is not far away, this is where my grandfather is from.

Just checked where it was. That’s not too far indeed. I don’t know Scotland that well as Edinburgh was my first visit to it. I only been 5 times to the UK so far.
Hope you can visit it one day.
Have a great Friday 😎
!PIZZA

Okay! Now THIS is the type of walk I long to take! 😃😍😲

All I see is beauty! You did so well taking us along with you. It’s so cool I got to visit this place through you. The color tone of the photos puts me right back to the time this place was booming. I really loved the feel of the images and seeing the gorgeous architecture all around.

You know what’s funny. One day we will get a house built just like these old time building were made because the houses of today do not last as long. Sadly some of these buildings are still probably in better shape than buildings that were made in this century. It just seems the value in work and the pride one takes in hard work has tremendously diminished over the years.

Anyhoo, I surely enjoyed this walk and look forward to going on the next one with you ~ 😉

Congrats on your six months on Hive!! I know you’ll continue to do well here and have fun. I’ll see ya soon ~

Thank you so much @crosheille 😊💃🏻 For you kind words. Much appreciated.

I’m so happy to hear you enjoyed our walk so much and saw all the beauty around us. All the little details 😉 it is truly a hidden gem that needs to be shared.

That’s indeed funny. Guess what, I studied engineering and was/am an architect /drafts woman.
So I soooooo know 😎 nowadays they just don’t build houses like this anymore… the kind that last and can stay in the family. The ones we would be proud on the keep up.
One day, more and more people will realise the kind they are building is not sustainable.
I hear more people say exactly this.

Great to hear your joining in next time again. I will make sure it will be special again 😉

Thanks a lot… yeah!!! 6 months 🥳🥳🎉💃🏻 So cool it’s already 6 months. I truly love it here!
See you soon 👋🏻😊 enjoy your evening!

You're welcome. 😉

Guess what, I studied engineering and was/am an architect /drafts woman.

😲😲😲 Oh wow so you definitely know exactly what I’m talking about! Wow look at that. You said it right on, “the kind that lasts and can stay in the family”. That is exactly the kind of home we want built one day for our family. It seems as the value goes down the prices go up. 🙁

It’s great you love it here. It’s real easy to stick around and make a home here. I’ll be celebrating my sixth year never month so that goes to show. 😁

Enjoy your evening as well ~ 👋🏽

Thanks 😁
Yes… we should start thinking just like that again. Make it last… more sustainable too 😉
We are moving this year and looking for an old house to renovate… make it last and energy sufficient. I don’t like the newly builds, there is no character in them. I do love a house with character and a garden again.

Wow 6 years… very cool. That’s soon. 🥳
I do feel at home and have found some amazing communities I do connect with 🥰😎

Thank you kindly, I will. 👋🏻

Yes, sustainable is key!

That’s smart to renovate an older home with character! I wish you well with that endeavor. 😃

I hope to have a garden too and maybe even some chickens. 😄

It is the way forward I believe.
Thank you so much @crosheille 😁
Yes me too, chickens, vegetables, fruits and herbs… my perfect garden 😊

Have a great day further 👋🏻☀️

I believe so too.

…chickens, vegetables, fruits and herbs… my perfect garden

Oh yea! You just described my perfect garden too. 😄

Thanks you too ~ 😊

Happy 6 month in HIVE :). More adventure to come in HIVE . The building and the infrastructure is superb . I love the way you capture it in your camera . Thumb up.

Thank you so much @tommyl33 💃🏻💃🏻🥳 and sure they will follow!

Yes, it was so beautiful to see and discover the buildings and infrastructure. Just a true little gem.
Thank you kindly, have an amazing Friday 👋🏻☀️

Congratulations! I wish you the greatest success in the hive. Thanks for sharing those photos, they are beautiful. Best regards!

Thank you so much @alborhada 🥳💃🏻😁 much appreciated!
Happy to share my travels and photographs, especially when they are so beautiful and a hidden treasure like this village 😊
Best regards! Enjoy your day ☀️

Urgh! This walk was everything. Every sight is so delightful. What you did with the photos and details is super cool.
Glad you took us on this walk.

Thank you so much @atyourservice 😊🥰
Glad you saw it this way and enjoyed walking with me. I enjoyed your company 😉 let’s go again for a walk soon!

You are welcome, happy to share. Enjoy your Wednesday further 👋🏻☀️

awesome post and some stunning photo's. this is the first time i have seen pictures of buildings as old and even older than here in italy.

It’s a little “hidden gem” actually as not many know about it 😉 So let’s spread the word

those that know about it may not thank you for exposing their 'once hidden gem'

i confess to really have to search for the gentleman and his dog .... opened the pic in a separate tab and enlarged it before finding him skulking in the bottom left hand corner

Thank you so much @themagus 😊
It’s was so cool to wander there. Even for me… living in quite some European countries, have studied engineering… it was truly fascinating to see.

It is not that hidden anymore, but I so understand what you say. But here… is still just a select group in Hive 😉

Maybe I should have told the location… hahaha thanks for finding him at the rivers adage, all hidden away 😎
Have a great day today! And thanks for visiting 👋🏻💃🏻

my pleasure... i look forward to your next walk ... and pics from your new continent where ever that may be. we recently did a 'continent' move to europe from africa .... it is quite a cultural shift, but a very welcome one.

Thank you so much @themagus 😁
It will take a while, but we get there.

That’s an interesting change, definitely a cultural shift. Enjoy Europe and take it all in slowly 😎
It’s beautiful.

very unusual place! I think when all the trees and bushes are green, the houses will not look so strict.

Thanks @tali72 😎 you think they look strict. How interesting. Maybe by look is different, as an architect. They fascinated me.

Yes, I’m sure than it will look better when all is fully dressed in fresh new leaves.

yes, you are right! I'm not an architect ))) I associate such buildings with the gloomy Middle Ages 😀

Congratulations on your 6 months journey. Great post and photos. I have been to Edinburg but did not know if the “little gem” - next time I guess. What a great Wednesday walk.

Thank you so much @momogrow 😁🥳🥳💃🏻

That’s a shame you haven’t found it yet, yes, do visit in your next trip as it is so close by the center… and so beautiful. Let me know if you do and what you think of it 😁 one day…
Thanks a lot 😊
Happy Friday 👋🏻☀️

Yes it is a pity. We will return one day. We went to Isle oF Skye thereafter - that was great. Happy Friday to you as well.

Haven’t been there yet… but heard it’s great… maybe next time when we go over and visit family again in the UK.
Thank you so much!

You are welcome. Yes it is .

The place seems to be a true gem, and your photos are so gorgeous.
Thank you for taking us there!

It sure is a little hidden gem 🤩 thank you so much @coquicoin 😊

You too, have a lovely day!

😊😄🪴

👋🏻😁☀️

I've never been to Scotland or Edinburgh but my cousin did and the first thing she said was that she fell in love with the architecture of the buildings and now I understand why! Everything seems like being part of a fairy tale! Lovely!

Thanks @gabrielatravels 😁 this was my first time to Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 it is just stunning. And I so understand why your cousin said that. I’m glad I could show you this now too… 😉
Have a wonderful day today!

Thanks too! Happy Thursday! 😁

Water and stone... Very rugged and very beautiful!

Beautiful place! Good for photo shoots and walks =)

Yes… like a fairytale. You can shoot every angle with your camera and still have amazing photographs 😎
And the walk through it… than further next to the river. Yes it was great.
Thanks for visiting and joining me in my walk.
Have a wonderful day today 👋🏻☀️

So beautiful rural area with a good arrangement harmonious planning, old building but still solid, and become a tourist destination. Thank you.

Thank you so much @hsidik 😁
It was stunning to look at. It’s in the middle of a large city 🏙 but everywhere the architecture is breathtakingly beautiful. And so much history…
You are welcome 😁

Biggg hugggg 🤗🤗

Beautiful pics of this village... very typical, definitely worth the visit.
Thanks for sharing all these pics

You are so welcome @heroldius 😁
Thank you kindly! It sure is worth a visit. It’s rather hidden… I would go back again as the atmosphere was so beautiful there and surrounded by nature and the river. I loved it. 😎

It's a country I want to visit, especially going to the island of Islay to visit some distilleries 😀

It was my first visit, hope not the last.
Sounds delicious 🥃 hope you can go one day 🤞🏻😁

Looks very nice. Edinburgh is high on my list of places to visit one day. Many people say that's its a very cool city. This neighborhood looks really cool. I like the old historic buildings along the river. Awesome! I'll have to keep that neighborhood in mind for when I go one day.

Do visit Edinburgh @leaky20 we so enjoyed our 3 night stay, we sure will visit again.
The history around you. The things to see… you won’t run out after a week. You still haven’t seen it all.
This little “village” just stood out so much… it’s like you are somewhere else, not in the UK. 😁 it’s beautiful.

Nice. Sounds amazing :)

😁👋🏻 it is…
