At the end of last week in our city there was the 17th International Book Fair, and @qwerrie and me agreed to meet up and wander together between the book stalls. But before I left home, I looked on the Internet and discovered that there was another very interesting event going on these days: a festival of retro vehicles. We checked in with @qwerrie at Discord and promptly adjusted our plans so that we wouldn't miss anything.

The final program for the walk looked like this:

  1. Meet on Nevsky Prospect.
  2. Walk to Manezhnaya Square, look at old cars, streetcars and trolley buses.
  3. Walk to Dvortsovaya Square (it's about 1.5 km, or a little more if you choose the most interesting route).
  4. To have a rest in one of coffee houses we meet on the way.
  5. To walk between bookstands on the Palace Square, enjoying the beautiful weather, to listen to the writers' speeches, to browse through book novelties.

In reality the mile and a half between Manezhnaya Square and Palace Square easily turned into five, because first we decided to walk along the embankment of Griboyedov Canal, and then we turned into a yard and suddenly found ourselves in the last century - at least that is how we perceived this realm of ruin and desolation. Old brick walls, melted asphalt, many meters of graffiti... yes, it is not easy to find this kind of nature in the heart of the city, but we made it!

The domes of the Church of the Resurrection can be seen above the low roofs; we had just passed this church, looking at the work of street artists and photographing street performers. But this is a different kind of place: there are not as many people walking around, but there are many artifacts of a bygone era.

The yard is much larger than a cursory glance would suggest. It seems to be a dead end ahead, but if you walk a little further, a narrow passage opens up to the next location, littered with multicolored empty barrels, and a door in the wall that leads to the rehearsal grounds.

In another corner of the courtyard is a brightly colored poster suggesting a visit to the museum. The museum is called "Hollywood Car Legends" and old cars are surrounded by scenery to help recall the plots of American movies.

If you go a little further and you see empty rooms and closed passageways again.

How it is possible that such a space in the center of the city is still almost free of tenants is hard to say. Perhaps the buildings are in need of serious repair, and the Committee for the Protection of Architectural Monuments imposes very serious restrictions on the work being done. But this is only my assumption, I do not know the exact facts.

This is my entry for the #WednesdayWalk challenge by @tattoodjay and for the #MakeMeSmile challenge by @elizacheng.

Sort:

It was a trip that was truly memorable! My legs hurt for three days in a row, hehe. Maybe it is a bit pity that you added to the post so few photos of me. They are a big, big fun! :-)

This is only a small part of our walk:) We had a long walk, but we'll have to sort through the photos even longer... The most successful portraits were later, in my opinion. I especially like the shot with the iron snail.

in other words: a lot of extra thanxx for doing this portraying job xD

That was so cool that you got together that day! It looked like so much fun!

btw, Mari enjoyed and stressed it out too! 🤸

That's great, thanks!:)

Looks like a fun packed day @tatdt you had with @qwerrie 😁 hi you 👋🏻
So much you guys did and see…
Very interesting alleyways, to bad it isn’t occupied by tenants or shops etc.

Enjoy your Wednesday further ☀️😊

I do! right now I grabbed my 70-200 and go out for a little coot duck hunt -- if I have a luck I will see some chicks xD

Great to hear @qwerrie enjoy your hunt 😉😁🤩

The appearance of tenants in these nooks is inevitable:) It's very strange that the old atmosphere is still preserved here almost intact.
Thank you so much, @littlebee4! Have a nice day!

It will eventually yes, but it still looks great like you say. It has been preserved.
You are welcome 😁
Thank you kindly, you too 👋🏻☀️

WOW what an amazign walk, so many people out and about and then all that cool street art, some a bit tacky but some that really stand out and are beautiful

Thanks for joining Wednesday Walk :), I truly enjoy exploring the world virtually each Wednesday seeing walks from all around the globe and feeling I am there and experiencing it all myself, such as I did in your post just now :)

This is a recurring problem in street art - great work is next to the inarticulate sketches of novice artists:)
Thank you very much!

yes thats very true the world over

I liked your walk and the creative walls in your city! 😊

Thank you so much!

Yay! 🤗

Look at you two! :))

Such a lovely walkabout with the two of you! I would have thought you would do a fun selfie with the two of you. I know you walk all the time @tatdt but you probably killed @qwerrie! You know how much I admire the architecture in St. Petersburg, but I have never seen this part of it.

Is there actually anything down there on your way or were they empty buildings?

This looked like a great meetup, great photos and I look forward to another installation!

Have a great day!

О... it's our mistake, we really should have taken selfies together! Such a good idea, but somehow we didn't think of it... I guess we were too engrossed in taking pictures of everything around us to think of taking pictures of ourselves as well:)

It's very difficult to understand what's inside. Some of the buildings are clearly occupied by some kind of office, or workshop, or warehouse-at least the doors are new, with good locks. Other buildings are empty. But there's a nuance here: there are quite a few old office buildings in this courtyard. In the XIX century yard space was not free of outbuildings. Stables, laundries, wood barns, icehouses - all the courtyards resembled mazes:) These buildings were demolished almost everywhere, but in this courtyard some of these old barns have survived. They make the yard seem more abandoned than it really is.

I'm so glad you enjoyed our walk! Thank you! Have a great day!

I truly did! You do the best walks!

Have an amazing day!

Now that's what I call a proper walk! Getting to see so many things and places in a single day is well spent time for sure. 😁

We did, it was a proper walk! At the end of the day, we were barely on our feet:) Thank you so much!

Oh, I know that feeling! And I love it! I think it's the most satisfying fatigue someone can ever experience :)

some beautiful street art there @tatdt , I always try to take the non tourist route and enjoy the vibe of the real city below the skin, great blog!!

We thoroughly enjoyed this walk - and another pleasure, from being able to tell you about it! Thank you so much:)

thank you for sharing x
