Commission #36 Head Collector | Digital Art

in OnChainArt4 years ago

Hello again blood-loving creatures, in this new commission made for @smanuels I introduce you to a warrior orc whose hobby is to decapitate his enemies, but not only that, he keeps their heads as exhibition trophies, for sure to show off to his friends and scare away his enemies, always looking to achieve a magnificent expression on their faces before killing them, after all what's the point of a collection without a bit of variety?

In this illustration I tried to reflect the sadism and brutality of the character, a face of satisfaction in contrast with the severed and tormented heads of his collection, showing that there are still many empty stakes waiting to be driven into them. Keep your skull glued to your body and accompany me through this bloody scene step by step.

Tools:

  • Wacom Intuos 4
  • Photoshop

-Step 1:

As usual, I started sketching the idea according to the client's specifications, focusing only on the character's posture, since his nature is that of a collector, I decided it would be great to have him admire the head he just cut off, his new trophy. I was in a bit of a hurry, so this time I didn't dedicate myself to make a nice lineart :C

-Step 2:

I broke the routine, I didn't go directly to the coloring after the sketch, no. Since the landscape would be nocturnal with a bluish environment, I thought it was convenient to make use of the gray scale to establish the details. Taking the grays to more saturated colors is simple in Photoshop, once your gray detail is ready, just go to image>ajustments>gradient map, choose the desired tones and that's it, you can quickly convert your grays into more eye-catching colors.

-Step 3:

Now if the time comes to paint with a lot of patience, selecting the right tones for the armor, leaving the blue tones only for the orc's skin and creating impact and enhancement with the sword, to this last one I have given a suitable knob for its owner, a small skull very matching with the ones around it.

-Step 4:

To impale heads has been said, here is when I remember poor Ned Stark nailed to the walls of King's Landing (sorry, a tear came out :c). Attached to the heads I have put a kind of sign, every collection must have his description. With a diffuse and soft brush I added a little fog, molding it around the pikes, thus covering the mess of rocks I was making previously. It is important to highlight the mountains, they were badly planned from the beginning, so I tried to create a little distance between them and the main character, this I achieved by darkening them and adding some clouds in front of them.

Tell me in the comments that you imagine when you see this illustration.

I'll leave you a little gif with the whole process in it, so you can better appreciate the step by step.

See you in a future post!

Such brutality, it is indeed well portrayed. I like the brushstrokes. Good job on this one!

Thank you! That version was more primitive, but it was not what the client wanted. Excuse my ignorance but what is DnD?
