Playing with Voxels- My Art Process

Hi guys! The past week I spent most of the time building a Cryptovoxel gallery, it was a commission based my previously sold NFT art. I love CV because it feels like I'm playing around and seeing my art in 3D is really satisfying. I hope to upgrade my pc sometime in the near future, so I can experiment with different kinds of 3D art. This post was more of an afterthought, but I'll try to take more process screenshots for my future galleries.

I use Magical voxel to make most of the details for the gallery. You need to use 32x32x32 size, and the limit is around 200 of them per gallery, I create a bunch and so far I've never reached the limit.
126x126x126 is the mega voxels and you can only have around 5 per parcel, so pick what you make for those carefully.

I begin by marking a floor outline for the walls. I've improved my spatial awareness in the past few years, and you can check out this blog post for more details: https://peakd.com/hive-156509/@kristyglas/infinite-corridor-art-process-visualization-meditation

As I mark the gallery walls and adjust them around, I considering how much space I need for the most important installations. I work organically, adjusting the plans on the go, just like I do with my regular paintings. If something feels in the way, I adjust or remove it.

Another thing to consider is the atmosphere, for example with the infinite corridor I needed a long area for the best effect, some installations may require a tall area instead. There are ways to create illusions of space with images, if your options are limited. So far I don't own any of my own parcels and I'm thankful for the collectors giving me building opportunities on theirs, like the Zonted Gallery. I love designing voxels based on my own painting, because it's much more personal and it feels amazing to see it come to life in 3D.

CV works weird with resolutions so most of the walls, I cut into 4 parts for a crisper look. Even if you use huge resolution, it still ends up blurry somehow if you stretch it over too many blocks. So a part of the work is figuring out ways to work around limitations, and it's usually worth the final effect. Also animations with 4 frames looks decent, but more frames makes the CV gif-s blurrier, no matter the resolution.

The palm tree took the longest to make, because I had to figure out the roundness of the base and the leaf details in spatially. I wanted the leaves to not feel too flat. I'm still figuring out how to use Magical voxel, so I make due with what I've already learned. While I work I keep discovering new tools like layers and keyboard shortcuts by accident as I miss click while working. I'm still learning, but my point of this blog is to motivate more artists to give it a try. Also you don't need a gallery to get started. For example I made a voxel skull that I tokebized on Rarible and included the voxel in unlockables so the collectors can add it to their own gallery. The turning animation was done in magical voxel and I wonder how many other cool features I'll discover along the way. I've started including voxel unlockables with a lot of my Halloween pixel cats, adding fun variety.

As you can see above, I created one side then I mirrored it to create the the back side. This is because when I paint, the voxels keep sticking to the walls, so this way I have a better control of the 3D shape. As I learn Magical voxel more, I might find more efficient way to paint. Also ideally I'd like to use my tablet. However, so far the program has been very laggy and buggy with my walcom, so I mostly use the mouse.

This week I plan to dedicate fully to my Async genesis artwork, but next week I hope to start preparing the Christmas Cat Party. @kraze.leo has lent me another incredible parcel to work on and I'm really excited about it.

This is the tutorial I used to learn about CV basics, the interface has been updated, but the tutorial is still very useful:

Hi @KristyGlas! I love your pixel art since I was here and I'm playing with voxels too! Will soon make a new post on this works I'm doing for a gaming community, by now I would love to have a comment from you, it's all done by me, trees and all the Casino's dome!

How sweet would be to collaborate with you on a voxel piece!

Oooh I love your work! I tweeted the trees :D Didn't know you're on Hive! Voxel collab sounds fun and interesting, I'm busy this month, How about January/February? Hope that's ok with you also dm me on Twitter, so I have you there ^_^

Looks amazing! Thanks so much!!! I'll put up an idea by the end of january ;)

Oh Beautiful, I love this Voxel soft.

Thank you very much! :D

Thank you so much for sharing! I saw that post on twitter a few days ago and was blown away! I love it. I was excited to see this post about it here. I appreciate when artists share their processes and document their work in deeper ways.

Thank you so much for checking it out <333 It's really fun do document these, it's like an art diary for me ^_^

I like your use of colours, you're talented!

Thank you so much <333 Hope you've been well :D

Awesome looking gallery :D

I remember playing with something that had a similar build cage on my phone a hundred million years ago and I got really annoyed as being limited by anything other than hardware seems to make me angry, guess I'm spoilt rotten by Blender XD

Hahahha, Magical Voxel is definitely a bit weird, I'm basically brute forcing it. I tried finding a better program, but there aren't really options sadly. I want to learn Blender, but I need to make more time for it :)

Ufff, these 3D worlds are complicated...I don't have the correct perception yet ... I started to build a new world in AltspaceVR and I made a complete mess... but in one hour ... need to learn more and devote more time to it ...

Hahaha, yeahh the first month I felt really disoriented as well, but the more I use it, the more I love it :)

Impresionante!
