Hivechess Tournament Round 8: results and some info about "The Queen´s Gambit" on Netflix

in The Chess Community3 years ago (edited)

Dear Chessfriends,

in round 8 we were 12 players and an average rating of 1797. Again no surprises, just that I played so badly, I can´t explain. The first 3 places went to @jaki01, @zacherybinx (sirtetris) and @yazp (zulukill) - Congratulations!
@rodrook could grab the 4th spot - best result for him in this season!
The remaining points went to myself, @franciscomarval (lestatblack), @alberto0607 and @schamangerbert (HerbyW).

from m8loss, darruiz and jonbellionfan I don´t have a Hive name and thus they are not counted yet

The rules you can look up in the announcement post.

Again not much changes today, I gave up my hope to regain the 2nd place.
@zacherybinx (sirtetris) and @rodrook could do some jumps in the ranking due to their good play.

See you next week!

And don´t miss out today´s Halloween tournament by @schamangerbert!

Did anybody watch already the Netflix miniseries called "The Queen´s Gambit" about an orphan chess prodigy? I liked it a lot! I think it is quite well done. Garry Kasparov acted also as an consultant.
Here is a screenshot from the last, deciding game:

Of note, this game was actually played, at least until the middle game (by Vassily Ivanchuk against Patrick Wolff in a 1993 International Tournament in Biel) before the makers of the TV-show added some crazy stuff including a Queen sacrifice.
agadmator analyzed this very interesting game in his chess channel:

By the way, this channel is highly recommendable and full of well made analyses of great chess games! You can learn a lot from it. But I guess you know it already, do you?

Sort:

I really like playing all of the strong players but fortunately I was not paired with them all this time. I made my customary numbers of blunders this time in spite of my best tournament performance .:)

I watched and enjoyed the entire small series "The Queen´s Gambit". I thought the beginning got off to a slow start before it was mostly about chess but the actor looked like what I would expect a lady champion to look and ace like. But Beth had many friends and relationships that I think many chess nerds don’t have.

From a parent and grandparent point of view I really liked when her mother asked for ten percent and she told her mother “lets make it fifth teen”.

Also I am always happy to here any talk about my favorite Grand master Morphy and how well he played.

it seemed to me that in the first series it was possible to sacrifice a queen instead of a bishop before checkmate

Yesterday I finally got the time of the tournament but I lost the internet connection. I want to take this opportunity to indicate that I have the same user. I hope that today I can play in the tournament.

OK, thanks! I hope next time it works out better!

Nice! Thanks for your report! I love the idea on posting a reply link. And the Queen's Gambit sounds interesting again, though we generally eschew Netflix and are happy about any open resource on it. !invest_vote
