Few months ago I wrote a post talking about One Piece, specifically how after 325 episodes it had failed to grab me and I was watching it almost out of obligation or commitment. After I finished the Enies Lobby arc I decided to give it a pause, even though I was curious enough to want to continue watching it, the last few arcs I had seen - Skypia and Water 7/Enies Lobby - disappointed me in a major way and almost ruined this anime for me, and to top it off, my friends told me that the next arc to watch, Thriller Bark, was one of the worst in the whole series, so if I was ever going to pick it up again I had to give myself a long enough break to not get even more overwhelmed. That's why, after about 3 or 4 months or so, I picked up One Piece again and advanced to the end of the Marineford War and the time skip of Luffy's training with Rayleigh, and in this post I'll talk about my experience and current opinions of One Piece.

So without any ado, let's start!

The first thing I have to say is that I don't understand people who don't like Thriller Bark, this arc is GREAT! I mean, I think Thriller Bark captures the essence of One Piece very well; it's an extremely funny arc, the trouble the Mugiwaras got into killed me with laughter, the mystery about the overall situation was always interesting, the hilarious Brook makes his debut in this arc and while he's not one of my favorite characters, I immediately liked him a lot, and most important of all: it was fun to watch, at no point did I feel like I was watching something unnecessary or annoying. The worst thing about this saga was its villain, Gecko Moria, I found him to be an annoying character, without much to contribute and that passes without shame or glory. Without a doubt, Thriller Bark became one of my favorite One Piece sagas, and even though I think it sometimes suffers from problems in its pacing (I think the whole series suffers from it), it's a very enjoyable and recommendable arc, but above all, a necessary relief to everything that had happened before.

From here, the build-up to what will be the biggest conflict (so far) in One Piece begins: the Marineford War.

The first stop for our beloved crew is the Sabaody Archipelago, the last barrier that separates them from the New World, the ultimate sea. In this place many things happen but among the most important we can highlight the meeting between the new generation of pirates, who as Luffy, cross the Grand Line pursuing the dream of one day becoming the King of Pirates. This new generation has some very interesting characters but without a doubt the ones that steal the spotlight are: Eustass "Captain" Kid and Trafalgar D. Law, who along with Luffy are the biggest promises to become the King of Pirates. The next important event is that Luffy punches a Tenryuubito, one of the world nobles, and this "simple" punch is enough for the Marine to send an Admiral to take care of the Mugiwaras, and all the madness to come is unleashed. The last but not least event is the separation of the Mugiwaras crew at the hands of the Shichibukai, Bartholomew Kuma, this the first time the crew is separated since they began their journey on the East Blue and is a breaking point for Luffy. This arc was unexpected and along with Thriller Bark, it had the ability to hook me into One Piece, all the new characters were very interesting as was the pace in the development of the events, I found a breaking point very necessary for consistent character development and I think this is the first time we see one since the adventure began. At this point the world starts to expand and it's becoming more and clearer that the world building is designed to work very well without relying on a specific character, which makes the story feel very organic.

The next two stops before the war are the island of women, Amazon Lily, and the underwater prison Impel Down. On Amazon Lily, men are forbidden to enter, so Luffy's arrival on the island is quite an event and as you can imagine, any kind of funny situation revolves around this, fortunately Luffy's charisma steals not only the affection of most of the women, but makes the queen of the island herself, Boa Hancock, fall in love with him. I think it's accurate to say that Boa Hancock is the character that made me laugh the most in all of One Piece, his relationship with Luffy is one of the best in the entire series, but on top of that Hancock is incredibly strong and is one of the few people in the world capable of using the Emperor's Haki, which by the way... Luffy is also capable of using, and discovers it during this little arc. So far Luffy's main goal is to be reunited with his nakama again, until news from the Marine HQ spreads around the world: Marshall D. Teach, also known as Blackbeard, has captured and delivered to the Marine the commander of the Whitebeard pirates' second division, Portgas D. Ace, and will be publicly executed in Marineford's central square in less than six days. At this point Luffy's focus changes and now his immediate priority is to head to Impel Down to avoid his older brother's tragic fate.

From here on too many things start to happen and several of them slipped my mind by the time I'm writing this post. The fact is that Luffy manages to infiltrate Impel Down with the help of Boa Hancock, unfortunately in this mini-arc something similar to previous arcs happens, too much filler between canonical chapters that interrupt the immersion of the experience, this arc could easily be eliminated at least 20 episodes and make everything more direct, I think it is the weakest point of the whole story of saving Ace and the Marineford war. Mind you, many characters were amazing during this arc, we met the sea knight Jinbe, the okama king Emporio Ivankov, and we met again old acquaintances like Buggy the clown and Mr. 3 (both working as comic relief during the development), but without a doubt the star of Impel Down was Bon Clay, and those who have seen him will agree with me.

The attempt to save Ace at Impel Down failed, so if Luffy wanted to save his brother, he had no choice but to head to Marineford and stop the execution himself. But it's not just Luffy who has intentions of saving Ace, as at the time of the execution, Whitebeard himself shows up and is willing to face whoever it takes to save his son. Here we really see how tiny Luffy is in relation to the world around him, we learn the truth about Ace's past, and there is a lot of intense fighting between the Marines and the fleet of Barbablanca's pirates. It's really hard to talk about this arc without getting into spoilers, it's very exciting from start to finish and the war itself and Luffy's passage in it is a direct consequence of the events we had seen before. One thing I really liked is that in between all of this we were also introduced to episodes talking about the whereabouts of the rest of Luffy's crew and what they were doing while their captain was trying to rescue his brother. At the end of the war in Marineford, and with the Mugiwaras still separated, Luffy has an important break in his life that makes him realize that he is still far from having the necessary strength to become the King of Pirates, so he decides to give a message to his nakamas to meet in 2 years in the Sabaody Archipelago, the place where all this started. During those 2 years Luffy will be training with Silvers Rayleigh, vice-admiral of Gol D. Roger's crew, giving the pirate Monkey D. Luffy a break.

To deny that I felt a lot of emotion during all these arcs would be a vile lie, but beyond that I think what is really important is that I began to understand One Piece as a work, I stopped comparing it with Naruto or Dragon Ball and began to appreciate it for its way of telling a story. One Piece IS NOT a fighting anime, it's an anime that shines for its story and world building, and it's also an anime where humor has a much more prominent role than in other works, as I said before, the perfect example of this is Thriller Bark, almost the whole arc is an eternal joke, but when it has to take things seriously it does it in a masterful way. Regarding the pacing issues, this is something that - I think - goes beyond the work itself; due to production issues, one episode of the anime is more or less two and a half chapters of the manga, and in order to stay true to the original material they need to lengthen the episodes as much as they can in order not to overrun the manga. The perfect example of this is Enies Lobby and their episodes about Luffy running around for 8 minutes without doing anything relevant to the plot. About my current One Piece’s thoughts... After everything I've said I think it's more than obvious that I could reconcile myself with this anime, however it's far from being one of my favorites, comparisons are hateful, but I think HunterxHunter does something very similar to One Piece in a much more direct way, and that's something that at least I, Alejandro Aldana, value a lot. I never said that One Piece is a bad anime, and I think what I said in that post lent itself to misinterpretation, but what matters is that I don't regret giving it a second chance and that in fact, I'm glad I did.

I'll definitely keep watching One Piece.

¡Saludos, Hive!

Hace algunos meses hice un post hablando de One Piece, específicamente de cómo después de 325 episodios no había logrado atraparme y lo estaba viendo casi por obligación o compromiso. Luego de que terminé el arco de Enies Lobby decidí darle una pausa porque, a pesar de que sentía la curiosidad suficiente de querer seguir viendo One Piece, los últimos arcos que había visto – Skypia y Water 7/Enies Lobby – me decepcionaron de una manera mayúscula y casi arruinaron este anime para mí y para colmo mis amigos me dijeron que el siguiente arco por ver, Thriller Bark, era uno de los peores de toda la serie, por lo que si en algún momento la iba a retomar tenía que darme un descanso lo suficientemente largo para no abrumarme aún más. Es por eso que, después de unos 3 o 4 meses aproximadamente, retomé One Piece y avancé hasta el final de la guerra de Marineford y el salto temporal del entrenamiento de Luffy con Rayleigh, y en este post hablaré acerca de mi experiencia y mis opiniones actuales de One Piece.

Así que sin más preámbulos, ¡comencemos!

Lo primero que tengo que decir es que no entiendo a las personas que no les gusta Thriller Bark, este arco es ¡BUENISIMO! A ver, creo que Thriller Bark captura muy bien la esencia de One Piece; es un arco extremadamente gracioso, los problemas en los que se metían los Mugiwaras me mataban de la risa, el misterio acerca de la situación general siempre fue interesante, el hilarante Brook hace su debut en este arco y si bien no es de mis personajes favoritos, inmediatamente me agradó mucho, y lo más importante de todo: fue ligera de ver, en ningún momento sentí que estaba viendo algo innecesario o molesto. Lo peor de esta saga fue su villano, Gecko Moria, me pareció un personaje molesto, sin mucho que aportar y que pasa sin pena ni gloria. Sin dudas Thriller Bark se consagró como una de mis sagas favoritas de One Piece, y si bien creo que en ocasiones sufre de problemas en su ritmo (creo que toda la serie lo sufre) es un arco muy disfrutable y recomendable, pero sobre todo un alivio necesario a todo lo que había ocurrido antes.

A partir de aquí, comienza la construcción de lo que será el conflicto más grande (hasta ahora) en One Piece: la guerra de Marineford.

La primera parada de nuestra querida tripulación es el Archipielago de Sabaody, la última barrera que los separa del Nuevo Mundo, el mar definitivo. En este lugar pasan muchas cosas pero entre las más importantes podemos destacar el encuentro entre la nueva generación de piratas, quienes al igual que Luffy, atraviesan el Grand Line persiguiendo el sueño de algún día convertirse en el Rey de los Piratas. Esta nueva generación tiene personajes muy interesantes pero sin duda los que acaparan la atención son dos de ellos: Eustass “Captain” Kid y Trafalgar D. Law, quienes junto a Luffy son las promesas más grandes a convertirse en el Rey de los Piratas. El siguiente acontecimiento importante es que Luffy golpea a un Tenryuubito, uno de los nobles mundiales, y este “simple” golpe es suficiente para que la Marina envíe a un Almirante para que se haga cargo de los Mugiwaras y se desata toda la locura que está por venir. El último suceso pero no el menos importante e la separación de los Mugiwaras a manos del Shichibukai, Bartholomew Kuma, es la primera vez que la tripulación se separa desde que inició el viaje en el East Blue y es un punto de quiebre para Luffy. Este arco fue inesperado y junto con Thriller Bark, tuvo la capacidad de engancharme con One Piece, todos los personajes nuevos fueron muy interesantes al igual que el ritmo en el desarrollo de los eventos, me pareció muy necesario un punto de quiebre para un desarrollo consecuente de los personajes y creo que es la primera vez que vemos uno desde que comenzó la aventura. En este punto el mundo comienza a expandirse y cada vez se entiende mejor que la construcción de este está planteada para que funcione muy bien sin depender de un personaje en concreto, lo que hace sentir la historia como algo muy orgánico.

Las siguientes dos paradas antes de la guerra son la isla de las mujeres, Amazon Lily, y la prisión submarina Impel Down. En Amazon Lily la entrada a los hombres está prohibida por lo que la llegada de Luffy a la isla es todo un suceso y como podrán imaginarse, cualquier tipo de situación graciosa gira en torno a esto, afortunadamente el carisma de Luffy se roba no solo el afecto de la mayoría de las mujeres, sino que hace que la mismísima reina de la isla, Boa Hancock, se enamore de él. Creo que es correcto decir que Boa Hancock es el personaje que más me ha hecho reír en todo One Piece, su relación con Luffy es de las mejores de toda la serie, pero además de esto Hancock es increíblemente fuerte y es una de las pocas personas en el mundo capaz de usar el Haki del Rey, que por cierto… Luffy también es capaz de usarlo y lo descubre durante este pequeño arco. Hasta ahora el objetivo principal de Luffy es reunirse de nuevo con sus nakama, hasta que una noticia desde el cuartel general de la Marina se esparce por el mundo: Marshall D. Teach, conocido también como Barbanegra, ha capturado y entregado a la Marina al comandante de la segunda división de los piratas de Barbablanca, Portgas D. Ace, y será ejecutado públicamente en la plaza central de Marineford en menos de seis días. En este momento el objetivo de Luffy cambia y ahora su prioridad inmediata es dirigirse a Impel Down para evitar el trágico destino de su hermano mayor.

A partir de aquí comienzan a suceder demasiadas cosas y varias de ellas se me olvidaron para el momento que estoy escribiendo este post. El hecho es que Luffy logra infiltrarse en Impel Down con la ayuda de Boa Hancock, lamentablemente en este mini-arco sucede algo parecido a arcos anteriores, demasiado relleno entre capítulos canónicos que interrumpen la inmersión de la experiencia, a este arco se le pudieron eliminar fácilmente al menos 20 episodios y hacer todo más directo, creo que es el punto más débil de toda la historia de salvar a Ace y la guerra de Marineford. Eso sí, muchos personajes fueron increíbles durante este arco, conocimos al caballero del mar Jinbe, el rey de los okama Emporio Ivankov, y nos reencontramos con viejos conocidos como Buggy el payaso y Mr. 3 (ambos funcionando como alivio cómico durante el desarrollo), pero sin lugar a duda la estrella de Impel Down fue Bon Clay, y quienes lo hayan visto estarán de acuerdo conmigo.

El intento de salvar a Ace en Impel Down fracasó, por lo que si Luffy quería salvar a su hermano no tenía más opción que dirigirse a Marineford y detener la ejecución el mismo. Pero no solo Luffy tiene intenciones de salvar a Ace, ya que a la hora de la ejecución aparece el mismísimo Barbablanca y está dispuesto a enfrentar a quién sea para salvar a su hijo. Aquí realmente vemos lo minúsculo que es Luffy en relación al mundo que lo rodea, aprendemos la verdad sobre el pasado de Ace, hay un sinfín de combates intensos entre la Marina y la flota de Piratas de Barbablanca. Realmente es complicado hablar de este arco sin entrar en spoilers, es muy emocionante de principio a fin y la guerra en sí misma y el paso de Luffy en ella es una consecuencia directa de los acontecimientos que habíamos visto antes. Una cosa que me gustó mucho es que entre todo esto también nos presentaron episodios hablando del paradero del resto de la tripulación de Luffy y que hacían mientras su capitán trataba de rescatar a su hermano. Al finalizar la guerra en Marineford, y con los Mugiwaras separados aún, Luffy tiene un importante quiebre su vida que le hace darse cuenta que aún está muy lejos de tener la fuerza necesaria para convertirse en el Rey de los Piratas, por lo que decide dar un mensaje a sus nakamas para que se encuentren dentro de 2 años en el Archipielago de Sabaody, lugar donde empezó todo esto. Durante esos 2 años Luffy estará entrenando con Silvers Rayleigh, vicealmirante de la tripulación de Gol D. Roger, dándole así un descanso al pirata Monkey D. Luffy.

Negar que sentí mucha emoción durante todos estos arcos sería una vil mentira, pero mucho más allá de eso creo que lo realmente importante es que comencé a entender One Piece como obra, dejé de compararla con Naruto o Dragon Ball y empecé a apreciarla por su manera de contar una historia. One Piece NO ES un anime de peleas, es una anime que brilla por su historia y la construcción de su mundo, y es también un anime donde el humor tiene un papel mucho más protagónico que en otras obras, como dije con anterioridad, el ejemplo perfecto de esto es Thriller Bark, casi todo el arco es un chiste eterno, pero cuando tiene que tomarse las cosas en serio lo hace de forma magistral. Con respecto a los problemas de ritmo, esto es algo que – creo – que va más allá de la obra en sí misma; por cuestiones de producción, un episodio del anime son más o menos dos capítulos y medio del manga, y para mantenerse fieles al material original es necesario que alarguen los episodios lo más que puedan para no sobrepasar el manga. El ejemplo perfecto de esto es Enies Lobby y sus episodios de Luffy corriendo por 8 minutos sin hacer nada relevante para la trama. En cuanto a mis opiniones actuales de One Piece… Luego de todo lo que he dicho creo que es más que obvio que pude reconciliarme con este anime, sin embargo está lejos de ser de mis favoritos, las comparaciones son odiosas, pero creo que HunterxHunter hace algo muy parecido a One Piece de una manera mucho más directa, y eso es algo que al menos yo, Alejandro Aldana, valoro mucho. Nunca he dicho que One Piece sea un mal anime, y creo que lo que dije en aquel post se prestó a la malinterpretación, pero lo que importa es que no me arrepiento de haberle dado una segunda oportunidad y que de hecho, me alegra haberlo hecho.

Definitivamente seguiré viendo One Piece.
