Someway or another anime has always been present in my life, my first contact with this medium was at a very young age, I was 7 or 8 years old when I first saw Dragon Ball, Digimon, Saint Seiya, or any other anime that was broadcast on television at that time. Logically I wasn't aware that what I was watching was anime (in 2002 the internet wasn't even remotely what it is today and accessing all the information we have today so easily was almost impossible), so it wasn't until my teenage years and my start in high school that I found out that all those animations I enjoyed so much came from the Land of the Rising Sun. However, this in turn brought something not good at all, and that is that by then anime was very stigmatized among teenagers, watching anime was synonymous with being bullied and excluded from social groups, and we know how hard this can be for a teenager, so in a stupid impulse of wanting to fit in with others, I moved away from this world ... Yes, I know it's pretty stupid, but come on, who did not do stupid things in their teens? The fact is that time passed and in 2013, two years after graduating from high school and with 19 years old, almost by chance came to me the anime that would be responsible for reviving that passion that was long dormant: Shingeki No Kyojin.
So without any further ado, let's start!
Shingeki No Kyojin, Attack on Titan, Attack on the Titans or whatever you want to call it, is a manga and anime series written by Hajime Isayama, its first publication saw light on September 9, 2009 and reached its conclusion on April 9, 2021 after 12 years of almost uninterrupted monthly publication. The anime for its part was produced by Witt Studio and began its broadcast on April 6, 2013 and ending on September 28 of the same year, had a total of 25 episodes in its first season. The work was an absolute success since its appearance both in manga and anime, granting it an important amount of awards and recognitions from specialized media both inside and outside Japan.
The story of Shingeki No Kyojin begins with a voice-over narration that in a few words puts us in the context of the situation: "On that day, mankind remembered that it lived in fear of the Titans, inside cages called 'Walls'". 100 years ago, an enemy which humanity couldn’t fight against appeared: the Titans. The difference in power was so big that the human race was on the verge of extinction, so the only option was to retreat and build three giant walls that cut the way between the Titans and humanity, the Maria Wall, the Sina Wall, and the Rose Wall. They managed to save themselves, but in exchange for this they had to be forced to live cornered behind the walls, without knowing anything else about the outside world, without freedom. Thus they spent 100 years, sheltered from the threat of the titans, most lived a "normal" life, accepting their fate as cattle behind the walls, and this is when we meet the protagonist of our story, Eren Jaeger.
Eren is a boy who lives with his family, his adopted sister Mikasa Ackerman and his best friend Armin Arlert, inside the Maria wall (the first wall that serves as a defense between the titans and humanity). Although they all choose to ignore the constant threat of the titans, Eren questions the fact of living in a corner and accuses those who are happy with that lifestyle as "cattle", this is why he has a deep admiration for the Survey Corps, one of the three main military powers within the walls and who are in charge of going out into the outside world in search of regaining territory and getting clues on how to end the titans. Eren is determined to be part of the Survey Corps when he grows up in order to fight for his freedom, however his family, specifically his mother, doesn’t agree with this because the Survey Corps is the corps that suffers the most casualties and she worries about her son's life, then they have an argument and Eren leaves home upset with his mother.
Later that day, while Eren, Armin, and Mikasa were having a conversation about the outside world and the false illusion of living a safe life behind the walls, out of nowhere appears a titan whose height exceeds that of the walls, which with a kick bursts the main entrance of the wall Maria, allowing the passage of a large number of titans, thus initiating the tragic fate that awaits our protagonists...
If I had to use one word to describe the first season of Shingeki No Kyojin I would choose the word "mystery", because if there is something that this season does well is to always keep us expectant. Let's start with the mystery of the titans; despite having a humanoid form nobody knows where they come from, nobody knows how they reproduce, the only thing the titans attack is humans because they don't hurt other life forms, it seems that their only goal is to eradicate humanity because they lack a digestive system, that is, they don't eat humans because they need them to live, they eat them just to kill them. So far all attempts at communication have been unsuccessful and they seem to lack intelligence, the only way to kill them is by making a deep enough cut in the nape of the neck area and they don't seem to have any other weak points. Throughout the entire season the fear of living in fear of the titans is perfectly reflected in each and every character, with a couple of exceptions, they are all aware that the power they face is something far beyond them, the danger feels real because the world of Shingeki No Kyojin is cruel, both to its characters and its viewers. For me, this was an immediate hook, the mystery was handled wonderfully and I couldn't stop watching, I needed to know what was going to happen. The plot twists weren't out of this world but enough to catch you by surprise, but the best thing about this is that, watching the season for a second and third time, I realized that from the very beginning we were given hints of everything that was going to happen, I like that because the script feels planned and not like it's being made up as it goes along.
By now we know more than well that the main threat in this world are the titans, however there is another enemy that humanity has to face: humanity itself. I know this may seem confusing, but those who have seen the series understand what I mean. Within the walls themselves is a monarchical and corrupt system of government, those who live within the Rose Wall (the last wall) are the rulers, the upper social class and the Military Police, who are in charge of protecting the king. All of them live even more disconnected from the reality of the world around them and only care about themselves, the Military Police sell military equipment and supplies in contraband and in general, the whole situation makes you understand that there is something much bigger behind all of them.
In terms of production this first season keeps NOTHING back, the animation is spectacular; it has amazing shots in drawing, details, shadows, lighting, etc. This applies to absolutely all the sequences of this first season, including of course fight scenes, which unlike other shonen where we commonly have showy fight choreographies, here they are very different; they fit well with the theme of the plot, the fights are of titanic proportions, visceral, cruel, and make you feel that every blow matters. The voice acting is among my favorite in the anime world, the work of all the seiyuu is impeccable and among them I highlight Yuki Kaji, seiyuu of our protagonist Eren Jaeger. Of course the music is not left behind either, and each composition is masterfully coupled to everything that happens in scene, its opening, Guren No Yumiya, is my favorite opening of all Shingeki and also one of my favorite songs. In general the work adopts a much more universal language compared to what we are used to when it comes to anime, and although this can be strongly criticized by veterans and purists, the truth is that from my perspective this is something very positive, thanks to this it could not only reach a much larger audience, but it changed in a positive way the way in which anime is seen in the west.
It’s difficult to speak objectively about Shingeki No Kyojin because it’s one of my favorite anime and a story with which I feel a special attachment, I think this may be due to the impact it caused in me when I saw it for the first time, or even something much deeper like identifying with its characters and empathizing with their suffering due to my own experiences. The main theme of the story is the quest for freedom, freedom that at the beginning is portrayed in the most literal way by Eren's longing to live in a world without titans and walls, however this concept is deconstructed as the plot progresses in later seasons, but that's material for another post, the fact is that I talk about this because a little more than 2 years ago I decided to go to a psychologist because I was living emotional situations that came to threaten my life, there I was diagnosed with depression and began a long process of therapies and treatment. I have to say that the road hasn’t been easy at all, I have not completely overcome depression and although not as serious as before, I still have emotional relapses that cloud my objectivity. However, with the help of my therapist and the people who have stayed close to me I have been able to fight against this, but another factor that has helped me stay on my feet (and one that I don't talk about as much) is the inspiration I take from anime, in this case, Shingeki No Kyojin.
No matter how unfair the world is, no matter how cruel the world is, FIGHT! It's true that I identify with the suffering of the characters in Shingeki No Kyojin, but I also identify with their will to live, to conquer their fears, to overcome that seemingly impossible obstacle. And even though the concept of freedom is such a subjective thing, Shingeki No Kyojin made me find my own freedom; for me, freedom is living without depression.

De alguna u otra forma el anime siempre ha estado presente en mi vida, mi primer contacto con este medio fue a muy temprana edad, tendría yo 7 u 8 años cuando vi primera vez Dragon Ball, Digimon, Los Caballeros del Zodiaco, o cualquier otro anime que transmitían por televisión en ese momento. Lógicamente no estaba enterado de que lo que veía era anime (en el 2002 el internet no era ni remotamente lo que es hoy y acceder a toda la información que tenemos hoy día de manera tan fácil era casi imposible), por lo que no fue sino hasta mi adolescencia y mi comienzo en el bachillerato que me enteré que todas esas animaciones que tanto disfrutaba venían del país del Sol Naciente. Sin embargo, esto a su vez trajo algo para nada bueno, y es que para ese entonces el anime estaba muy estigmatizado entre adolescentes, ver anime era sinónimo de ser bulleado y excluido de los grupos sociales, y sabemos lo duro que puede ser esto para un adolescente, por lo que en un impulso estúpido de querer encajar con los demás, me alejé de este mundo… Si, sé que es bastante estúpido, pero vamos, ¿quién no hizo estupideces en su adolescencia? El hecho es que el tiempo pasó y en el 2013, dos años después de haberme graduado de bachillerato y con 19 años de edad, casi por casualidad llegó a mí el anime que se encargaría de revivir esa pasión que pasó mucho tiempo dormida: Shingeki No Kyojin.
Así que sin más preámbulos, ¡comencemos!
Shingeki No Kyojin, Attack on Titan, Ataque a los Titanes o como quieran llamarla, es una serie de manga y anime escrita por Hajime Isayama, su primera publicación vio luz el día 9 de septiembre de 2009 y llegó a su conclusión el 9 de abril del 2021 después de 12 años de publicación mensual casi ininterrumpida. El anime por su parte fue producido por Witt Studio y comenzó su emisión el 6 de abril del 2013 y finalizando el 28 de septiembre del mismo año, tuvo un total de 25 episodios en su primera temporada. La obra fue un éxito absoluto desde su aparición tanto en el manga como el anime, concediéndole una cantidad importante de premios y reconocimientos de medios especializados tanto dentro como fuera de Japón.
La historia de Shingeki No Kyojin comienza con un relato de una voz en off que con pocas palabras nos pone en el contexto de la situación: “Ese día, la humanidad recordó que vivía atemorizada por los Titanes, dentro de unas jaulas llamadas ‘Muros’”. Hace 100 años apareció un enemigo contra el que la humanidad no podía pelear: los Titanes. La diferencia de poder era tan grande que la raza humana se vio al borde de la extinción, por lo que la única opción fue retirarse y construir tres muros gigantes que cortaran el paso entre los titanes y la humanidad, el muro María, el muro Sina, y el muro Rose. Lograron salvarse, pero a cambio de esto tuvieron que verse obligados a vivir acorralados tras los muros, sin saber más nada del mundo exterior, sin libertad. Así pasaron 100 años, resguardados de la amenaza de los titanes, la mayoría vivía una vida “normal”, aceptando su destino como ganado tras los muros, y es aquí cuándo conocemos al protagonista de nuestra historia, Eren Jaeger.
Eren es un niño que vive con su familia, su hermana adoptiva Mikasa Ackerman y su mejor amigo Armin Arlert, dentro de la muralla María (la primera muralla que sirve como defensa entre los titanes y la humanidad). A pesar de que todos deciden ignorar la constante amenaza de los titanes, Eren se cuestiona el hecho de vivir acorralado y acusa a quienes son felices con ese estilo de vida como “ganado”, por esto es que tiene una profunda admiración hacia la Legión de Reconocimiento, uno de los tres principales poderes militares dentro de las murallas y quienes se encargan de salir al mundo exterior en búsqueda de recuperar territorio y obtener pistas de cómo acabar con los titanes. Eren está decidido a formar parte de la Legión de Reconocimiento cuándo crezca para así luchar por su libertad, sin embargo su familia, concretamente su madre, no está de acuerdo con esto debido a que la Legión de Reconocimiento es el cuerpo que más bajas sufre y se preocupa por la vida de su hijo, luego tienen una discusión y Eren se va de su casa molesto con su mamá.
Más tarde, ese mismo día mientras Eren, Armin, y Mikasa tenían una conversación acerca del mundo exterior y de la falsa ilusión de vivir una vida segura detrás de los muros, de la nada aparece un titán cuya altura supera a la de los muros, que con una patada revienta la entrada principal del muro María, permitiendo el paso de una gran cantidad de titanes, dando así inició al trágico destino que le aguarda a nuestros protagonistas…
Si tuviera que usar una palabra para describir la primera temporada de Shingeki No Kyojin escogería la palabra “misterio”, porque es que si hay algo que hace bien esta temporada es siempre mantenernos expectantes. Comencemos por el misterio de los titanes; a pesar de tener una forma humanoide nadie sabe de dónde vienen, nadie sabe cómo se reproducen, lo único a lo que los titanes atacan es a los humanos porque no lastiman a otras formas de vida, parece ser que su único objetivo es erradicar a la humanidad porque carecen de sistema digestivo, es decir, no se comen a los humanos porque los necesiten para vivir, se los comen solo para matarlos. Hasta ahora todo intento de comunicación ha sido fallido y parecen carecer de inteligencia, la única forma de acabar con ellos es haciendo un corte lo suficientemente profundo en el área de la nuca y parecen no contar con otros puntos débiles. A lo largo de toda la temporada el miedo de vivir atemorizado por los titanes es reflejado perfectamente en todos y cada uno de los personajes, salvo por un par de excepciones, todos están conscientes que el poder al que se enfrentan es algo que los supera con creces, el peligro se siente real porque el mundo de Shingeki No Kyojin es cruel, tanto con sus personajes como con sus espectadores. Para mí, esto fue un gancho inmediato, el misterio fue manejado de una manera maravillosa y no podía parar de ver, necesitaba saber que iba a pasar. Los giros en el argumento no fueron algo de otro mundo pero si lo suficiente para agarrarte por sorpresa, pero lo mejor de esto es que, viendo la temporada por segunda y tercera vez, me di cuenta que desde el primer momento nos dieron indicios de todo lo que iba a pasar, eso me gusta porque el guión se siente planificado y no que se está inventando sobre la marcha.
A esta altura ya sabemos más que bien que la amenaza principal de este mundo son los titanes, sin embargo hay otro enemigo al que la humanidad se tiene que enfrentar: la misma humanidad. Sé que esto puede parecer confuso, pero quienes hayan visto la serie entienden a lo que me refiero. Dentro de las mismas murallas se maneja un sistema de gobierno monárquico y corrupto, quienes viven dentro de la muralla Rose (la última muralla) son los gobernantes, la clase social alta y la Policía Militar, quienes se encargan de proteger al rey. Todos ellos viven aún más desconectados de la realidad del mundo que los rodea y solo se preocupan por ellos mismos, la Policía Militar vende equipamiento militar y suministros en contrabando y en general, toda la situación te hace entender que hay algo mucho más grande detrás de todos ellos.
En cuanto a términos de producción esta primera temporada no se guarda NADA, la animación es espectacular, tiene planos asombrosos tanto en dibujo, detalles, sombras, iluminación, etc. Esto se aplica a absolutamente todas las secuencias de esta primera temporada, incluidas por supuesto las escenas de combate, que a diferencia de otros shonen donde comúnmente tenemos coreografías de pelea vistosas, aquí son muy diferentes; se ajustan bien a la temática de la trama, los combates son de proporciones titánicas, viscerales, crueles, y hacen sentir que cada golpe importa. Las actuaciones de voz están entre mis favoritas en el mundo del anime, el trabajo de todos los seiyuu es impecable y entre ellos destaco a Yuki Kaji, seiyuu de nuestro protagonista Eren Jaeger. Por supuesto la música tampoco se queda atrás, y es que cada composición se acopla magistralmente a todo lo que sucede en escena, su opening, Guren No Yumiya, es mi opening favorito de todo Shingeki y además una de mis canciones favoritas. En general la obra adopta un lenguaje mucho más universal en comparación al que estamos acostumbrados cuándo de anime se trata, y aunque esto puede ser fuertemente criticado por veteranos y puristas, lo cierto es que desde mi perspectiva esto es algo muy positivo, ya que gracias a esto pudo no solo alcanzar un público mucho mayor, sino que cambio de forma positiva la manera en la que se ve el anime en occidente.
Es difícil hablar objetivamente de Shingeki No Kyojin pues, es uno de mis animes favoritos y una historia con la que siento un apego especial, creo que esto se puede deber al impacto que causó en mí al verla por primera vez, o incluso algo mucho más profundo como el identificarme con sus personajes y empatizar con su sufrimiento debido a mis propias experiencias. El tema principal de la historia es la búsqueda de la libertad, libertad que al principio es retratada de la forma más literal por el anhelo de Eren de vivir en un mundo sin titanes y sin murallas, sin embargo este concepto se deconstruye a medida que avanza la trama en temporadas posteriores, así que eso es material de otro post, el hecho es que hablo de esto porque hace poco más de 2 años decidí acudir a un psicólogo porque estaba viviendo situaciones emocionales que llegaron a atentar contra mi vida, allí fui diagnosticado de depresión y comenzó un largo proceso de terapias y tratamiento. Tengo que decir que el camino no ha sido nada sencillo, no he superado del todo la depresión y aunque no tan graves como antes, sigo teniendo recaídas emocionales que nublan mi objetividad. Sin embargo, con ayuda de mi terapeuta y de las personas que se han mantenido cerca de mi he podido luchar contra esto, pero otro de los factores que me han ayudado a mantenerme en pie (y uno del que no hablo tanto) es la inspiración que tomo del anime, en este caso, Shingeki No Kyojin.
No importa lo injusto que sea el mundo, no importa lo cruel que sea el mundo, ¡PELEA! Es verdad que me identifico con el sufrimiento de los personajes de Shingeki No Kyojin, pero también me identifico con su voluntad para vivir, de conquistar sus miedos, de superar ese obstáculo que parece imposible. Y aunque el concepto de la libertad sea algo tan subjetivo, Shingeki No Kyojin me hizo encontrar mi propia libertad; para mí, la libertad es vivir sin la depresión.
This review was complicated to write but also very satisfying, I'm sure I forgot to mention things because I think Shingeki No Kyojin is an anime that can be analyzed from many perspectives. I wanted to give a general idea of how this first season unfolds and how it prepares us for what's to come, which is undoubtedly a crazy thing you won't expect. Recuerdo que hace bastante tiempo cuando este anime acababa de llamar la atención de muchos, no me gustaba para nada. Eso si, la animación si me gustó bastante y me pareció una locura. Este mismo año le di otra oportunidad y si me encantó, todo me entretuvo, lo que me pareció aburrido cuando estaba pequeño, ahora cobraba sentido y realmente fue emocionante. No he querido guiarme por lo que dicen las personas que leyeron el manga, solo espero que los nuevos caps sigan siendo así de buenos como lo vienen siendo. SNK es un anime bastante serio y es de lo mejorcito que se puede ver.
Yo estoy al día con el manga, ya terminé todo, y pues para mi el final estuvo bien y es un final bastante consequente en relación a todo lo que había sucedido a lo largo de la historia. No es perfecto ni mucho menos, pero para mi funcionó y si bien pudo ser mejor, es el final que el autor decidió y yo lo respeto.
Me alegra mucho que le hayas dado otra oportunidad y no estoy seguro si ves anime (por tu comentario me pareció entender que no) pero como lo dije en el post, ese es uno de los puntos fuertes de SNK para mi, el hecho de abrir la industria del anime a un público mucho mas amplio.

Personalmente Shingeki No Kyojin me parecía el mejor anime de la historia, al menos hasta la llegada de la "Season Finale", donde creo que hubo un bajón en cuanto a historia y animación. Habiendo leído el manga tampoco estoy muy emocionado por lo que se viene, a menos que cambien la historia original, cosa que veo casi imposible.
Lo que pasó con la animación fue que hubo un cambio de estudio y además la producción fue súper apresurada, bien lamentable porque Mappa es un estudio de animación asombroso, ellos animaron Jujutsu Kaisen y es un deleite visual. En cuánto a la historia, en efecto si tiene un bajón en calidad pero no me parece que sea algo tan drástico, de hecho el final no me parece malo, aunque tampoco me apasiona demasiado. Cambiaría un par de cosas, pero al final del día es la visión de su creador y si eso quiso pues, eso se respeta.
Y a pesar de que soy un fanático acérrimo de SNK (hasta tengo un tatuaje 😂) nunca lo considere el mejor anime de la historia. Es que bueno, creo que ser "el mejor" en cualquier cosa es un concepto bastante subjetivo.
