I decided to watch this film simply because I have seen other movies/series where the director/writer, Satoshi Kon, has participated, and I have enjoyed most of them. The best productions are Perfect Blue, Paprika, the series Paranoia Agent, and Magnetic Rose, which is not a film nor series but the first story of the animated anthology film Memories I wrote about several days ago. The only production I didn't enjoy very much was Tokyo Godfathers, which I also wrote about some days ago.

Millennium Actress isn't a bad film, but it is the production I have enjoyed the least with the exception of Tokyo Godfathers which was truly awful for my tastes. Millennium Actress is a bunch of stories within the main story, the main characters are the legendary actress of course, a man doing a documentary about her life and his cameraman. These 3 characters are going to have an imaginary journey throughout the film, while they revive some of the most important events in the life of the actress.

Decidí ver esta película simplemente porque he visto otras películas / series en las que ha participado el director/escritor, Satoshi Kon, y he disfrutado la mayoría de ellas. Las mejores producciones son Perfect Blue, Paprika, la serie Paranoia Agent y Magnetic Rose, que no es una película ni una serie, sino la primera historia de la antología animada Memories sobre la que escribí hace varios días. La única producción que no disfruté mucho fue Tokyo Godfathers, sobre la que también escribí hace unos días.

Millennium Actress no es una mala película, pero es la producción que menos he disfrutado con la excepción de Tokyo Godfathers que fue realmente horrible para mi gusto. Millennium Actress es un montón de historias dentro de la historia principal, los personajes principales son la legendaria actriz, por supuesto, un hombre que hace un documental sobre su vida y su camarógrafo. Estos 3 personajes van a tener un viaje imaginario a lo largo de la película, mientras reviven algunos de los hechos más importantes en la vida de la actriz.

This actress, called Chiyoko Fujiwara, has been living in the past few decades a very isolated life after her sudden retirement from the Japanese entertainment industry. She is now an old woman with no family and the only person living with her is her maid. She has quite a few stories to tell because apart from her successful acting career, she also had bad experiences in her real life as the result of the war between Japan and China in the 30s and 40s.

All of these stories are intertwined with each other and while we see the most important events in these stories we will also see the documentary guy with his cameraman present as if they were there when these events occurred. Sometimes the transition between these stories is similar to what happens while we dream, where 1 story ends up mixing with another completely different story.

Esta actriz, llamada Chiyoko Fujiwara, lleva en las últimas décadas una vida muy aislada tras su repentino retiro de la industria del entretenimiento japonesa. Ahora es una anciana sin familia y la única persona que vive con ella es su sirvienta. Tiene bastantes historias que contar porque, además de su exitosa carrera como actriz, también tuvo malas experiencias en su vida real como resultado de la guerra entre Japón y China en los años 30 y 40.

Todas estas historias están entrelazadas entre sí y mientras vemos los eventos más importantes en estas historias, también veremos al documentalista con su camarógrafo presente como si estuvieran allí cuando ocurrieron estos eventos. A veces la transición entre estas historias es similar a lo que sucede mientras soñamos, donde 1 historia termina mezclándose con otra historia completamente diferente.

As we explore these stories we will find a lot of drama, but also a few happy scenes, as well as some action and even a bit of fantasy. The presence of the documentary guy and his cameraman can make everything more fun for the viewer. The most important event in her life was related to romance though, and we will learn about how the war was an important impediment in achieving her romantic dreams.

The idea behind this film was original I would say, but it wasn't touching nor intriguing like other great anime productions I have seen in the past. It was just OKish and that's it. It is a bit hard to recommend this film even though it isn't a bad one, but there are simply other productions that are much better in my opinion. If you want to see romantic anime stories check some of Makoto Shinkai's works such as Your Name, 5 Centimeters per Second, Weathering With You, among a few others. If you want good drama with fantasy, then Paprika, which had the same director as Millennium Actress, would be better.

Mientras exploramos estas historias encontraremos mucho drama, pero también algunas escenas felices, así como algo de acción e incluso un poco de fantasía. La presencia del documentalista y su camarógrafo puede hacer que todo sea más divertido para el espectador. Sin embargo, el evento más importante de su vida estuvo relacionado con el romance, y aprenderemos cómo la guerra fue un impedimento importante para lograr sus sueños románticos.

La idea detrás de esta película fue original, diría yo, pero no fue conmovedora ni intrigante como otras grandes producciones de anime que he visto en el pasado. Estuvo bien y eso es todo. Es un poco difícil recomendar esta película aunque no sea mala, pero simplemente hay otras producciones que en mi opinión son mucho mejores. Si quieres ver historias románticas de anime, mira algunos de los trabajos de Makoto Shinkai como Your Name, 5 centímetros por segundo, Weathering With You, entre algunos otros. Si quieres un buen drama con fantasía, entonces Paprika, que tuvo el mismo director que Millennium Actress, sería mejor.
