DOES ART NEED TO BE EXPLAINED?

in Alien Art Hive3 years ago (edited)

Personally I think art is in the eye of the beholder. But people keep asking me "What is your picture actually of?" So this year I decided to include some notes with each picture. Here is one of my latest pictures fully explained:

WE HAVE SPECIAL NEEDS

Wonky Party Girls - ink with digital editing (2021)

The juxtaposition of focusing on an outcome but watching the universe fold before us.

Can we both fold and unfold?

Meh, I don't know... But I've been thinking about the same topic
Personally, I think if my art needs to be explained to the consumer (whether it be music, paint, etc) there must be something missing from both sides...
Maybe I didn't let the "feels" go off in my art, or maybe I tried to but it went too deep that it started to seem vague?... Or maybe the consumer didn't find something he can relate to, ya know?

However, these things speak, a piece of random drawings always says something, music as well... They even speak better than us,
I could speak for hours and hours about my feelings but, when it comes to music, I can express pretty much everything in mind with just one sweet melody...

Love what you did there though, also, your website is cool :)

Thanks - be vague out there :)

Aight, see you on the other side :)

Are you suggesting we all need to cross the road into a more artistically abstract place?

Maybe we've been constrained by realism for too long...

image.png

Nah, mate... Wasn't even suggesting anything
I was just thinking out loud cause the idea of "explaining" been bugging me for a while so yeah...

Maybe we've been constrained by realism for too long...

I'm with you on that... But, my point is:

Interestingly, I addressed this question recently in an artwork https://nftshowroom.com/veeart/art/veeart_motions_why-are-butterflies-beautiful

I believe the theme is 'art for art sake'. Like how I like this art you shared for the imaginative expression. But this would be on the extreme end.

Another take is that not everything needs to be expressed in words. Your art may be about the excesses of the ruling party and someone just sees a group of friendly folks having a nice meal. Another sees something else. I love this obscurity more than the artist influencing what I see.

And finally, I have this process where I have nothing particular I want to do but then I'm listening to one of my playlists and it's all spontaneous. So if anyone needs an explanation or history, it was the music and the moment. I do not have words for that.

Well that's just how I feel.

Given the response to this post, I'm now thinking a bit of explanation is what a lot of people are hanging out for! So I'm going to keep posting more info from now on.

Interesting thought, as a Surrealist, I've been wrestling with this forever. Since what I do is often not premeditated, but growing at the spur of the moment, meandering over the page exploring whatever comes to mind at the moment, I find it hard to give titles and explanations to it. Yves Tanguy comes to mind, who titles one of his strange landscape paintings: "Mama, Papa is wounded".
I appreciate the work of Zdzisław Beksiński who neither titles nor explains his work. It is up to the beholder to explore and read his own story into it.

I make up explanations the same way😉

My opinion - NO.
Art is not about rationality and intellectuality. Art is emotions. It's something that must be felt, not explained or proved.
It's a wave of energy and creativity. Just follow it or leave.

In Russia we say: If it's needed to be explained, then don't explain it.
It means - if a person doesn't get it, then don't waste time for explanations;)
It's just about your question, yeah?:)

The explanation seems to trigger a lot of response, which is fun, and when I draw picture I often write things at the same time, so I'm going to do a few more posts with added words!

Your drawings give me nightmares.. Lets get back to normal relaxing street art ...

externalcontent.duckduckgo.jpg

Street art is very therapeutic!

image.png

it's not needed, but it can be fun sometimes to get to know more how the artist thinks :)

Did I overthink things here?

oh god... takes big sip of unsee juice

Donuts not a short dude with his tongue out at here waist level? Autocorrect strikes again! Damn thing spelled level backward.

Donuts are the true voice of America!

There's so many typos in my original comment even I can't decode it. No, really, I swear I don't drink.

And I thought that was deep wisdom that I'm too stupid to understand...

I think I understood better, before you sexsplained it...?!?!?!?!?😒

I know, all my pictures are blindingly obvious, I don't know why people keep asking, because no explanation is necessary to those who open their eyes and choose to see :)

Oh you silly man...!!! That's surely a representation of recording and riding upon the Block-Chain into the Abyss...

Er, yes exactly, that's it...

Oh, GOOD... It saddens me to know when I'm right, sometimes!!!

Art hanging on a wall has no info in text , no direct explaining but the visual work at sight . The artist took a emotion , feeling , view or object and made an visual impression out of it . Without the text info on @frot his posted artwork , i can still tell , he was in a horny mood with special needs when he made this .
Art is a silent witness sometimes ;-)

I am not a pervert - you have me mixed up with that other guy...

Sometimes, you just have to state what inspired you to create it or what you feel about the piece you just did. Others could feel differently though but on a normal note, it doesn't necessarily need to be explained.
