Saturday afternoon: Captain Lee and Mr. Worley were both shocked to see Mrs. Slocum-Lofton after she had completed her preparation for the evening's events. Mr. Worley almost passed out.

“Lord, this is who I get for a second wife? She's still a knockout!”

Mrs. Slocum-Lofton was still trim, and tall, and her tailor adored her, as did her hairdresser and her makeup artist … she was as beautiful as she could be at 84, a stunning old queen on a day of state.

Captain Lee smiled.

“You know, there are counties in Virginia that are open today for a marriage license, and will allow you to do the ceremony on the spot,” he said.

“Yeah!” Mr. Worley said.

“A pity we don't have time to get to them before this thing that I must attend – goodbye, John, and stop meddling and let's go, Henry,” Mrs. Slocum-Lofton said, and playfully skittered out of Mr. Worley's reach before heading down the hall with her grandson. “I'll make it up to you, John – next month!”

“January? You'll marry me?”

“Yes. When I get back, we'll pick a day to go do it.”

“YES!”

Mr. Worley started dancing around like he was 25, for a few moments hopping on one foot, his one all-weather boot sounding like a drum of jubilation, sounding again and again before the other 50 years caught up with him and Captain Lee and Mrs. Slocum-Lofton rushed back to catch him.

“Now, you have to live, John!” said Mrs. Slocum-Lofton. “No heart attacks, strokes, or broken legs and hips!”

“You be careful too tonight,” he said as he put his arms around her. “Henry, you better make sure my fiancee gets back here alive.”

“Sir, if she doesn't get back alive, I'm not either.”

“You're just going to make the greatest grandson I never had!”

Then a moment of sweetness … Mrs. Slocum-Lofton playfully puckered up, and the two lovebirds had their kiss before she and her grandson departed – but he could not restrain his jubilation, and they could still hear him shouting from the street.
