Visiting Karlovy Vary - A picturesque town in Czech Republic

Welcome back everyone to a second day of our trip to Czech Republic. After a one day stay at Budapest we continue to our destination which is Prague. But before we settle in our main spot, we wanted to visited another town in this beautiful country - well known Karlovy Vary. It is an hour and a half drive away from Prague so we are getting past the destination which we will return to the next day.

Also known as Carlsbad, Karlovy Vary is situated in the western part of the country, near the German border. It is famous for spa resorts which have been attracting visitors for centuries. And indeed when you walk through the city, it looks like a big spa. Small river going through the town center, beautiful buildings surrounding it and pedestrian streets along the way.

It is a peaceful mountain town, tucked away under the hill. Great spot when you need relaxation and escape from the hustle of modern life. There are many hiking trails you can walk along and get to the top for a view of the entire city.

Of course, the main attractions of the city are countless hot springs, bathhouses and spa resorts. It is believed that these sources of mineral water provide incredible healing benefits. While walking on the squares and main streets, you'll find these water sources where water reaches temperatures between 30 and 70 C degrees. Often it's necessary for it to be diluted with cold water to get the preferred temperature for bathing. The taste of the water is salty and not really pleasant with some extra flavors, so you'll see people making faces when drinking from one of these faucets. :D

Another famous happening in the city is of course the Karlovy Vary international film festival which attracts the world's most popular actors. It's usually organized in July and lasts for nine days.

I must not forget to mention the beautiful architecture - depending on the area of the city, there are various influences from typical classical and gothic buildings, to even temples in the style of ancient Greece. But throughout the city you'll see colorful facades and interesting, decorative ornaments.

The town of Brno

As the drive from Budapest to Karlovy Vary takes approximately 7 hours we had to make a stop somewhere along the way to rest and fill up the bellies. We decided to stay in Brno, which is half way, as it is the second biggest city in the country and worth visiting on its own.

We only had few hours in the city so we didn't get to explore a lot. The 3 photos are taken with my phone. We liked the city, it has a relaxing vibe, a blend of history, culture and modern life, with some great restaurants offering traditional Czech cuisine. If we find ourselves again here, we'll certainly dedicate a bigger chunk of time to it.

I'm glad I caught your post at the perfect time because I'd been waiting for it. Karlovy Vary is a gorgeous town and like you said it looks peaceful from the pictures. I'm sure the city will be alive with activity by July for the film festival. The structures are magnificent, especially St Mary Magdalene's Church. This is my first time seeing the interior.

Thank you for sharing your travel experiences with us. Best wishes for your trip to Prague.

I am so happy you enjoyed the tour around the city! It's not a big city but it has a lot to offer, especially when you are not in a hurry and don't mind relaxing for a few days. I wish we had some more time at our hands, I would certainly go for swimming in one of those spas. For a more active stay, there's the next destination - Prague. :)

A city that boasts of "countless hot springs, bathhouses and spa resorts" is worth visiting! These pictures are stunning. I especially like the one capturing the reflection of the restaurant building. The architecture of this city is classic and lovely.

So the water is safe for drinking?

I hope those giant looking ants on that building are not alive! 😄 Thanks for taking us on a tour through Karlovy Vary. 🙂

Yes, the town is really picturesque! Nice combination of natural parks, beautiful architecture and big public squares. The water is safe for drinking in Czech Republic (at least that's what they say) and marketed as having healing benefits in those water springs downtown. I haven't tried it though. :)

Haha no, the giant ants are only a decoration. An interesting one indeed, I've never seen anything like it. :)

Both, Karlovy Vary and Brno are great. You should definitely go to Brno again and spend more time there. Make sure to visit the castle, it is absolutely worth it 🙂

I have only visited Karlovy Vary once, but I really enjoyed it. I loved that you can drink from directly from the springs and I didn't even mind that the water was warm 😂 But as you say it's a matter of taste. I'm used to spring water, so I don't mind the taste, but I can imagine that some people don't enjoy it that much.

Thank you for sharing!

Thank you for the recommendation, @delishtreats! I'll definitely keep that in mind next time I'm passing Czech Republic by car. Although it's more likely that my next visit to Prague will be by plane. :) But yeah, exploring Brno and Karlovy Vary had to be a bit rushed unfortunately.

I haven't tried the spring water myself. Normally I like spring water, although friends said this one had a metal-like taste to it. :D
