A trip to the Caldera

Santorini (Thira)

This is my second trip here, and I am sure I will be back here many times. There are endless reasons to visit Santorini. For those who do not know where that is, if you click on the hyperlink, google map will take you there. It is part of a group of islands called Cyclades at the Aegean Sea, which is part of the eastern Mediterranean Sea.

It is widely said that nowhere in the world there is this much man-made white than in Cyclades, and Santorini is probably one of most picturesque of all greek islands. Numereous photoshoots, movies and honeymoon pictures were shot there and being shot every day. Even on greek island standard, which is a very high standard to begin with (yeah, there are places like Mykonos, Paros and Naxos to compete!) Santorini is stunningly pretty in almost any angle you look at it. Towns built on the cliffside of a giant volcanic caldera, which is now filled with ocean water defies all logic of human habitation. I can probably write for hours about the Minoan Eruption of second millennium of Bronze Age, which created the present shape of the island and desctroyed the Minoan civilization, but I won't on this post. I have hours left of walk the narrow steps and streets of Firastefani, where I am staying, and I should focus more on that!

People dress up, get to shape, just to be on this island. Even me, I personally like to enjoy wearing blue and white only when I am here. The local food of Fava, Tzatziki and Ouzo along with fresh fish is something I can live on forever. Where in the world you can have a boat at the roof of a building as a decoration and made it look good!

The doors are amazing, the usual blue and white with Bougainvillea basically everywhere. Everyday there are cruise ships that arrive in the caldera and stay there for the day. The tourist flock the streets of Fira and Oia, which if you stay there, may feel a bit stifling, but trust me that is just usually the main streets (stairs! more on that later), empty areas can still be found. Especially early morning and after sun down street are usually empty.

I have thousands of pictures and many interesting experiences of share, but my time is limited today, and my balcony, the first picture is from there is inviting me. So let me go and sit there, and watch time pass by!

This is like a mini-haven indeed! If you could eat a place up, that'd be it. I can almost taste the photos!

No kidding :)

There is amazing history and geology there as well

A place @bingbabe has been wanting to visit Santorini for ages. I am sure it's due to all the Mills & Boons she used to read such as 'The Greek Billionaire's Huge Cock'.

Tut.., the wrong reasons methinks, and she no longer reads this crap.

Yes, and for her this will be appropriate

Believe me this is a whole “thing” here, and I love it!!

'only usable on windy days' 😀

Dude! Every day is windy here!

😆😂😆😂 you almost kill me!

woo, beautiful :) have fun

This is a place you want to visit someday, Xawi

So pretty! I too would be tempted to wear mostly white when there. Really love the all-white walls of Santorini :D

Most people do use white or blue.. linen or cotton. It just works!

Santorini must be on a lot of peoples hit list, including mine. Still need to get myself over to Greece one day

And it is much much closer for you!

I've been lots of places in Greece, but never there!

That’s a bit surprising to be honest. I haven’t been to many places in Greece but it’s my second trip here.

I did a 3 week road trip around the Peloponnese starting in Athens in a rental car. Ancient Olympia, the small mountain towns, the Mani.
It was a fascinating trip. I took an overnight ferry to Lesvos and rented a car there to tour the island for a week. I loved it all and always intended to back, but the world is such a big wonderful place and there was always someplace else I wanted to see!
Are you still there now?

I am here now. Will be here for 1 more week and then to Mykonos.

Always want to visit Mani!

After reading that book ;)

What book?

In my travels I have always avoided places that tour boats stop. Too touristy 😉 so I have missed out seeing both of those places.

It is touristy can’t deny that…

Please consider reading Fermor if you haven’t already. This was done long before tourists ever came to Greece

Added to my much too long To-Be-Read list! Thanks for prompting me to do that. I've seen it, but haven't read it.

such a dreamy place!Def on my bucketlist! 😍

Yes, on many people's bucket list actually

It’s so beautiful, and you did a great job with the pictures. Do people live here or they are strictly for tourist, I means these White Houses

Yes people live there

And how elegant of those people who live daily life there yet this place remained like this!
Such amazing folks, just like their natures beautiful colors!

Elegance comes from within, Mou. Lots of people don’t get it. There are incentives to keep a place beautiful and clean, as opposed to argue who in the govt should do it.

Of course it is.
However, if people who live around don't cooperate, it’s impossible for authorities no matter how much money or law they put upon!
At least crappy experience from my country taught me that. Even incentives, law nothing works if people doesn’t have it in them.

Well too bad for them :) only they will have to lose ;)

Place...!!
Where anyone can found peace 😌😌

@luba555

Santorini is beautiful place, but for me is too crowded! I hope you manage to watch the sunset view from Caldera and drink the local wine Vinsanto?

You had me at:

The local food of Fava, Tzatziki and Ouzo along with fresh fish is something I can live on forever.

I'm a little envious. I want to dress in white and wear a blue hat ... while dining on fresh fish. Oh yum!
