Tokyo Station
Everyone told me that Tokyo is crowded. Obviously it is, and yet, there is no reason to be scared about that. They have also mentioned that Tokyo station is crowded and you get lost there. Also you must stand in long lines for JR pass activation. All these are a bit overrated.

That is the plaza in front of the Tokyo station at 8am. This is on the Marounchi Station Square side and as you can see I mostly have the place to myself on a Monday morning. Yes, inside the station there was normal morning rush, but nothing that an average tourist can’t handle.

These are a bunch of school students on a field trip of some kind. And yes lots of people and most train employees wear masks. So summary from all these is the crowd was manageable.
Late arrival
I mentioned in the comments of my previous post that I arrived at my hotel past midnight. It was a comfortable hotel and did get a good night sleep. I also slept most of my way in the plane so I was not tired in the morning.
I had to validate my JR pass, get some Konbini breakfast, and get some cash. Those were the order of things I had to do. Since my hotel is virtually across the street from Tokyo station I did all that at the station plaza. Then went upstairs to a garden area to have my breakfast!

Looks like there will be a lot of food pictures here! I have never had this good quality food at convenience stores at these prices. That box of rolls with a warm boiled egg was 730 yen which is $4.30! It is filling, healthy and tasty! These days I can’t get a coffee at those prices in Houston. A typical brunch here cost north of $10 easily and sometimes $18 and still the taste here leaves you half-hearted at best! My goodness, US has become so expensive! I have just been to Switzerland and now Japan, both known to be expensive places. But man I am here to tell you that times have changed. Both are much cheaper than average cities in the US!
Fall at the Imperial Garden
After my breakfast, I still had an hour to kill before my Shinkansen to Kyoto. I was taking Hikari 637 from platform 15 (which was easy to find without asking anyone for help), from Tokyo station at 9:33am. So I decided to take a short stroll towards the Imperial garden which is just on the other side of the station.

Fall has arrived here. It’s not peak yet. This year fall is arriving very late in Japan. I didn’t get to see much of the garden in 1 hour, but it is immaculate.

After the short stroll it was time to get to my train and head to Kyoto. I will arrive there around noon. And just because @livinguktaiwan mentioned I did pick up my #2 Bento Box and a Asahi beer for the train! Yes, you have drink alcohol at public places in Japan! It’s a wonderful country!

Talk to you guys later from Kyoto or Nara. Don’t know where I will end up for the night! Joy of travel with a backpack only!

That plaza! That garden! This is the Japan I wanna see. Great pictures, thanks for sharing!
I was checking your movie review. It's good! I hope more people reads you and you read more people it’s a problem at hive.

Backpack and no pre booked accommodation. Is this some sort of "reliving missed youth travels at mid life" type of journey? Have fun!!
You got that right :)
Will look at some rocks later, but that is always a bit of an excuse :)
It’s incredibly is here these days (and perhaps a lot of other places). You can do everything just from your phone. Everything here (almost) is well connected by train and after that people walk.
I saw this little kid walking back home from school on her own, crossing major city intersection at Nara. She must be seven! If she can do it, I can do it ;)
I wish I could let my kids do this and we have public transportation in Houston! Alas, US has gone so backwards!
That ¥730 hits a little harder when one is paid primarily in yen... But I suppose until the yen gets back up against the dollar, all you tourists can enjoy! 😃
Hope you are having a blast!
For 730 yen I can eat that stuff all day everyday at every meal! Man that egg with red-orange yolk is impossible to find in Houston!
I am having a blast. Heading to Kyoto.
That lovely old building facade, amongst the steel and glass, Japan is on my list to do, thankfully they have quite a few MacaDees, coz there is no way I would even consider eating that cuisine!!
what!!! you're going to fly half way around the world and not eat the local food??!!! Japanese is one of the best cuisine in the world!!!
Yup! LOL,
100% agree. It is literally the best food in the world by any measure.
It is literally the best food in the world. It is incredibly diverse so I am sure you will find what you like.
Hmm! if I get there I will let you know LOL
Wow, that is pretty awesome. It looks almost immaculate from the photos. I kind of feel like New York City was the same way for me. People have all these stereotypes and preconceived notions like it is crowded and dangerous. Yes, there are a lot of people, but most of them are minding their own business trying to get from point a to point b, so it really isn't that bad.
Grounds of any public building or shrines are kept immaculate in Japan. In some uber popular places they are struggling to deal with the tourist pressure but it is still incredibly clean.
That is cool.
Wow my dream country to visit when I finish my studies and successful I want to visit Tokyo
Mine too. I have been thinking about visiting since I was a little boy. Only doing it now in my 50s
😀😀 enjoy your time and take more photographs
Will do
Wow! One of my dream countries to visit is Japan. I just don't have the capabilities as of now. But thank you so much for showing a glimpse of Tokyo and its beautiful station. More blogs to come! 😇

I have heard they have great bento meals and beers. Kampai!
Yes, they are everywhere.
Man, maybe one day I will have this opportunity, it is one of my dreams to visit Japan!
HAhaha what a change, right? being able to eat healthier in convenience stores over there!! Here in Canada I go to a convenience store to buy a hot dog or something similar, just to fill my tummy! Please share more pics of food! And drink a lot of green tea and matcha !!
Here in that #2 fried chicken from Eki-ban
Sorry, I am no food blogger! I forgot to take pictures after I opened! This was in the Shinkansen on the way to Kyoto
it is like KFC ?
Ha ha ha!
An order of magnitude better:)

Marounchi Station Square looks great! Early bird catches the worm, eh? 🐎
Yes. No substitute for early rising.
Most people sleep on a plane or any journey to catch up on their sleep so that they don't feel tired and sleep deprived in the morning. Since drivers mostly use masks to protect themselves from diseases transmitted from other people, one reason for the low number of deaths could be the morning time, but I think that most people also go out to their work etc.
in the morning. Hotels and food items or you have been using it, which did not cost much. It was a good thing for you. Thank you for sharing your travel post with us.
thats a good news If japan & Switzerland are cheaper than the US, tokyo is also one of the bucket lists to visit, now i know why because it is also a really beautiful place. 😍
have a great time wherever your feet take you hehe, take care.
A pure whirlwind of people in this iconic place. What a privilege to experience it firsthand. Thanks for showing it to us!
How I wish to visit Tokyo soon. I want to travel that place with my loved ones.
Yeah, not crowded at all :) Interesting that they still wear masks!
That's what I call a perfectly cooked egg! I'd love to visit Japan sometime. I really like your photos and the report.
